How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I'm beginning to have nightmares with this one. <img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle> I've finally succumed to the old age "near sighted" syndrome! <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>Actually its gotten worse over the years to where at a distance things are blurry. I just bought the glasse a few weeks ago, and I only wear these things to shoot. It sure does clear things up,....BUT, I have trouble because I am looking into the inside edge of the glasses,...AND THAT AIN'T GOOD! I obviously have to "square up" more with the target so that I am looking more through the center of the lens, but its becoming quite difficult to figure out. I already shoot with a pretty open stance. I'm thinking that I may need to change the way I anchor. I currently shoot a Winn Free Flight and put the V of the my forefinger and thumb into the back of my jaw bone. Thumb tucked underneath the jaw bone. I'm beginning to think that this anchor point doesn't allow me to square my face up more with the target. Does anyone have any suggestions??

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Hmmm. I wear glasses but never gave this any thought. I guess I just naturally square up to where it works for me.
The worst and most frustrating part of wearing glasses (while hunting) is when they fog up on you. I haven't found a sure-fire cure for this yet but it has actually cost me a deer! The only thing I can think to suggest is trying contact lens. You'll probably want to get with your doctor to see if your right for them. -Mike |

twang
I wear glasses as well but wore them before I took up the bow I use a kisser button and have the string across the center of my nose which really puts the sight plane in the center of my lenses also I dont use a peep you could try the hind sight or the yikes bow sight I use the hind sight which I have found helps a lot. As for the foging up problem I cant help there we dont get those big freezers here in Texas |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Also... a lot depends on the type of glasses you use. Sometimes the frames will play an important role... [gave me fits]
Bottom line... I couldn't find a pair of glasses that I could use to shoot with. I hunt without them... but before anyone starts thinking I am out there flinging arrows like Hellen Keller... I should say my eyesight isn't all that bad. Reading small print stinks... but overall vision is good. Have you considered contact lenses? If you do... get started on them well before the season starts so you know what to expect. Good luck... I feel your pain. -DT |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I began having great difficulty using a peep when I first had to wear glasses. I went to a no-peep and it pretty well took care of my problem. It worked well for me and then my son and some other friends wouldn't be without it and most of them don't wear glasses.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I agree - glasses are a pain. After drilling out the hole on my peep sight a little bit, I was able to make it work O.K. The biggest problem I have with glasses is that they tend to fog up at the worst possible times.
|
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I shoot with glasses and agree that they are a problem. There is a product in spray form called "no fog" (or something like that) that I have when I was racing in the rain for both my glasses and helmet visor and it works great. Don't remember exactly where I got it but my remembers are that it was at any automotive store

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
If I dont wear a hat I have no problem with the glasses fogging up . Seems like the bill causes the steam to form on the glasses
|
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
CONTACTS!!!!!!!
They don't fog up and they move with your eye. |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Twang, I wear glasses and got them after the bow. The way I shifted to shoot was to change where I anchored my thumb. Instead of being tucked under my jawbone, I put it on the back of my neck. After getting use to the change, it falls in place everytime. The fog free spray can be hard to find. If you are in Wal-Mart, go to the aoutmotive section and pick up the fog-x cleaner for your car windows. It is the same stuff except in a bigger container. good luck. Chris

Your scareing me twang!
I also just succumed to the "old age near sighted syndrome" , I got my glasses yesterday but I haven't shot my bow yet. Hope I dont have any problems. I know I'll at least be able to see the kill zones at 20yds and beyond now. "Nocked, cocked & ready to rock" |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
i think the stuff tbow52 is talking about is called fog-off. i use it for racing and hunting and it works. i get it at a motor cycle/snowmobile dealer.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Ive been wearing glasses since 6th grade, so when I learned to shoot, the glasses had no effect on me. Ive always had to change angles or position to see some things. You learned to shoot a bow without glasses, so now its just a matter of teaching yourself to shoot with. Your gonna have to break some habits and form new ones.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I started to wear glasses full time for hunting about 2 years ago and had the same problems as everyone else. I found the by drilling out my peep site a little larger helped and also now use Rain-X Fog before I go out stops my glasses from fogging. Hope this helps.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I put up with the same problems for over 20 years. Laser surgery a year ago put an end to all my problems - my only problem now is if I miss, I can't blame it on poor vision!

USE THE FORCE TWANG!!! Just like Obi Wan said. Feel the deer, be the deer, smell the deer, shoot the deer...then eat the deer.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I have been wearing glasses since a young age and hate them. I am near sighted and now old enough to also have a problem reading. The solution I came up with is contacts and mono vision. One eye is corrected for distance and the other for reading. It may take awhile to adjust to it but for 90% of the time it works great. For small print in dim light I will still use cheap reading glasses but other than that I am glasses free. No fogging, no worry about rain, no frames.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I wear contacts and glasses. But what is the "cure" for keeping the glasses from foggin up? What about scopes on a gun? That has costed me a deer. Email me at [email protected]

TWANG - man you're gonna make me a million! Why didn't I think of this years ago? Deer Hunting by braile. ;:',.^* (just feel the screen, I wrote it out)

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I too wear glasses. All I do is push my glasses to my face as close as I can push them and I have no problems at all. It is a pain but it works for me.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Chris is right anchor your thumb around your neck it will square your face up to the target. You never realise how much of an angle your looking at till you try to shoot with glasses, keep at it you'll find you like it.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Bob/Wolfen "confucius say " he who smart arse go blind"! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
I considered contacts but couldn't imagine putting them in and out each time I picked up my bow since thats the only time I want to "sharpen" my vision. I notice that if I push the glasses into my face then they fog up in the corner. This is indoors!! Can't imagine what a pain this would be in the winter with condensed breath! I think the solution is gonna be to change the anchor somewhat to square up more as some suggested. Thanks Guys! |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I am also losing the battle for good sight! I had to start wearing glasses a couple of years back. So far, I shoot my bow without them. I just can't seem to get used to shooting with glasses. This year I may try contacts. I wear progressive lens, and when I look through my peep sight, I end up looking with the reading lens! Good luck! I think the contacts will be the way to go!

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
say good bye to hunting glasses and buy a perscription pair of goggles. the kind horace grant used to wear they strap tight to your head and come with a fog proof coating. any eye glass store can make them that is what they use around here
|
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
TWANG, why take the contacts out? Just put them in in the morning, and take them out in the evening, that way your vision is always "sharpened."
If you do go the contacts route, look into the disposables, they are a lot less hassle than the traditional daily wear contacts. |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
well I have been wearing glasses since first grade and shooting bow almost as long an the first thing I do when I set up a new bow is to drill out the peep as much as can possible be done than raise your peep up on the string more than you would if shooting with out glasses than drop your front sight down to compensat you also may want to shorten your draw slightly so you have a little more room to tuckin to you bow and it doesent hurt to put your arm guard back on for a while , while you experamint small fram glasses help to like the ones radar wore on mash good luck :)

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I started wearing specs 38 years ago, switched to contacts 20 years ago, got bifocals 10 years ago, and now I can't see sh*t. Just do what I do. Slam your eyes shut and use The Force. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Is that why you keep missing deer, Author i mean Jedi Knight :) Just kidding. I where glasses. I also have contacts. Just adjust your bow until you feel comfortably and try that. Once you are comfortable with wearing your glasses and shooting, take your glasses off and dont adjust anything on your bow and just try to shoot like that. Try to find comfortable settings that you can wear your glasses or contacts/no glasses.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Twang Pushing the glasses to my face has never fogged for me. Do you have huge framed glasses I just don't see how they fog. It does work but your nose is under your glasses so there should be no fogging.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
It usually comes from the heat of your face. When I am dove hunting and I am kind of sweating, my glasses fog up. Also when it is raining.

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
VAhunter15 is correct on why I believe my glasses fog up, and I usually have to let down and remove the glasses to evaporate the condensate. Thats why I want to stay away from pushing the glasses into my face.
I hit the shop last night and anchored toward the back part of my jaw bone instead of underneath like Chris/nhhunter suggested. I also found that the NO-Peep was forcing me to slightly tilt my head away from this position to get the No-Peep in alignment. This was such a "suttle" unconcious adjustment that it had eluded me. With this adjustment my group shot several inches to the right from before, but of course I then had to swing my no peep to alignment with my set-up, and move my sight outa allot. I shot a couple tight groups and had to quit. The No-Peep now forces me to that set-up/anchor point in order to get the No-Peep in alignment. It worked for the next couple groups before I had to quit. Of course the real test will be when I recheck this tonight and preceding sessions but it seems to be in the right direction. :) The No-Peep is a great alignment tool and I would unquestionably recommend it to anyone for improving your shooting. Once you set it up you HAVE to shoot with the same anchor point/head alignment/bow hand torque(hopefully lack thereof). BUT,...I think I just learned that it can can "set" you into a "out of canter" position if you have to make some sort of change like I did in switching to glasses and it HAS to be adjusted to your "shooting form", not adjusting your shooting form to the No-Peep. A more difficult correction to catch and correct than one might realize. |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I wear glasses.
Many guys who where glasses have the draw too long and that allows them to look through the peep more in the center of the lens. For most, when the draw length is good, you will be looking through the frame or wire -- as in my case too. The thumb wrapped around you neck is a very poor anchor point will will not help your shooting. When I hunt, I use a No-Peep. When I shoot open class, I remove my glasses (my eyes are not that bad anyway). George Ryals (Martin Pro) showed me a little trick with glasses -- if you have the kind with separate little pad that rest on your nose (not a once piece plastic frame) you can shift your glasses to the left and put your nose between the nose pad and frame of the right lens. It looks goofy, but for shooting your 3 or 5 shots indoors or your 1 at a 3D, it works great. Just shift it prior to shooting and shift it back when you are done. |

RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
Twang,
I shoot with glasses and have no trouble. I draw 31 inches and anker my thumb behind my head also. You didn't say what kind of glasses you wear. I weare trifocals. I recently tried the new progressives and found I couldn't adjust to them. I am acustomed to turning my eyes rather then my head and with progressives you are required to look directly over your nose. A shift of 20 Degrees left or right and you loose focus. Hope this helps. |
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
When I shoot, I let the string, just touch the tip of my nose, I have no problems with shooting except fogging up.
|
RE: How the heck do you shoot with glasses!!!!!!
I must be lucky because My glasses never fog.
