Best Broadhead for deer
I have shot 3 blade muzzy's with the chisel point but after reading an article in Peterson's which says the cut on contacts are far better, I am wondering if I am shooting the wrong head. I also have a friend leaving for an Elk hunt soon, and he is wondering if he should trade for the cut on contacts.
Any suggestions? |
RE: Best Broadhead for deer
Have the 3 blade Muzzys worked for you in the past? If so, then stick with them. Many people use them, myself included. Just because you read an article doesn't mean you should waste money. Yes, COC heads get good penetration, but if you can acheive a lethal hit with the broadheads you have now, why waste money?

RE: Best Broadhead for deer
cut on impact have there place, but the muzzy is one of the best broadheads "ever" made. most cut on impact blades are razors and do not leave big wounds. muzzy will open the animal up and usually pass right through. stick with what u have. muzzy broads will take down the largest african game...deer are no match

Bear Razorhead...
You laugh, but I've killed more than my share over 20+years with them. If you hit them right, they're as good as any. That said...If you hit them right, a good field point will do the trick. LOL Last year was my first year ever hunting without the Razorheads. Not much diff. I used mechanicals, and I still was the deer going down in sight of my stand. |
RE: Best Broadhead for deer
most cut on impact blades are razors and do not leave big wounds If your using a COI and a muzzy that have the same size blades why would the muzzy leave a bigger wound? A 1.25 cutting diameter is the same wether it's a COI or a chisel head. hunters have been using heads like the Wensel woodsman for years on African game with no pronlems. Best Broadhead for deer |
RE: Best Broadhead for deer
Stick with what you know works.
Just how dead do you want these deer to be????? I've shot Muzzy 3 blade 100's straingt through the center of a deer's rib and it still passed through...and the deer was plenty dead plenty quick. |
RE: Best Broadhead for deer
i'VE WROTE IT IN A COUPLE THREADS ALREADY , I TESTED MORE THAN A FEW BROADHEADS INTO A 1 INCH PIECE OF PLYWOOD ON SUNDAY, CUT ON CONTACT BROADHEAD FAIRED OK, TOO MUCH CUTTING SURFACE TO PENETRATE PROPERLY, MUZZY'S ON THE OTHER HAND PASSED RIGHT THRU IT, NOT SAYING CUT ON CONTACT BROADHEADS WILL NOT WORK, BUT FOR MY MONEY AND THE SHOT OF A LIFETIME MUZZY'S MY BROADHEAD OF CHOICE.

RE: Best Broadhead for deer
Muzzys are excellent heads and if you are happy with them I see no reason to switch.

RE: Best Broadhead for deer
There are no best broadheads for deer. I'll say it again you have to use what you know in your heart of hearts you can shoot the best. I would say that all of the broadheads on the market will get the job done. Provided the shooter can put the broadhead where it belongs.
I use the one I know I can put where it needs to be put when the time comes. When I hunt from a tree I use that brand and that brand only. Don't care about the rest of them because I have confidence in that one. Reason I looking at others is because I have a blind, so I'm looking at some to see what will go thru the mess and what won't. So select the one that you can tune and shoot to your best abiliety. You'll go broke and nuts trying them all, because there isn't any best one for deer.. |

RE: Best Broadhead for deer
Guys remember it was a piece of wood not a living breathing animal with flesh and bone. The cut on contacts had too much cutting surface to penetrate thru the wood, there was too much surface slowing the blades down. Not saying it would be the same in a deer.

If you are getting pass thru's with your muzzy, and I am confident that you are, how much more penetration do you need.

However I have since switched to a COC head (magnus) and I like them better. I feel like they will out penetrate in the case of a not so great shot. On a good shot, there's probably not much difference between them. Pass through, dead deer. So to answer your question.....it's up to him. IMO, the COC heads offer a little more insurance in the case of a not so great hit, but I would think that the Muzzy's should perform well. |
RE: Best Broadhead for deer
I think everyone here has their own personal choice for broadheads, sounds to me like most of us use Muzzy's, If a broadhead works for you, why Change?
|
RE: Best Broadhead for deer
I also use Muzzys. Tried and true, and the price is right. I cant see paying over $30 for three expandables.

RE: Best Broadhead for deer
Im deciding between Muzzy 75's or G5 Montec 85's. I shoot a 75 gr field point, so 10 grains up isnt going to matter a whole. i like the muzzy's because i dont have to resharpen them, i just gotta change the blades.

RE: Best Broadhead for deer
Someone may have already stated this....but there is no BEST broadhead on the market. If you put almost any broadhead thru the boiler room you have a dead deer. Some may perform better than others in certain situations but there are just too many good broadheads to have a BEST one.
