RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
So how do you get something that size out of the bush? I thought you usually quartered and brought them out. That's a lot of meat. Congrats on a successful hunt.

RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
Luckily there was a cut road access going towards the lake and he dropped right beside the road,All I had to do was drag him the rest of the way and we hand bombed him into the trailer . And yes it was a rush to get a critter that size that close .During archery season the bulls are usually pre rutting and rutting so to call them out can be easy if you know where the bulls are .We got lucky and found his fresh scrape on some tree's and knew he was there somewhere so we just had get in there and work him with cow calls and he came right to us . Unfortunately I wasn't the shooter but I was very near and heard everything when he went to take off.I'm going to post a pic of the shooter and the bull.

RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
Adam! We have a lottery here in Ont ,but I think if you go through an outfitter you should be able to get a tag without going the lottery route.

RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
Hey Nudo,
Any tips?....I'm going Moose hunting this Oct in Mn. |
RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
Bird hunt dog! The big tip is that at this time of year the bull's are near rut ,but if the weather is warm you won't find the moose out walking around near roadway's too much. The way to find them is to get your leg's working and check out around swamps and ponds and small lakes because the moose like to stay cool, this is where you'll find sign of moose in the area.Once you find sign of a bull ripping small bush's apart and fresh track's you have to have a plan on staking the area out and the occasional cow call help's. Hopefully he'll give you grunt or 2 to let you know he's coming. Once you get a response then stay on him and keep his interest by calling him again ,as long as he calls back you reply .That's the best advice I can give you .
I hunted moose during the rifle season for 8 years and it was a total different stratagy just find a spot to sit and wait or lot's of guy's like to drive around because it's usually cold at that time and the moose tend to come to the road lots. The moose will come to the road during the archery season if it get's cold ,but sign near the road during archery season are hard to come by .Good luck to you and I hope your as successful as we've been in the past 3 archery seasons. We're 3 for 3 and this is what we've learned ,you got to go out and find them ,they're not going to come to you unless you find them and call them in. nubo |

RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
Thanks for the help Nudo!
Just wanted to add that were hunting in the Boundry Waters Canoe Area. It sounds like about two portages will get us into some good bulls. A friend of a friend works for the forest service and has been working in the area where we will be hunting. He claims they have spotted a couple of 60+'' bulls and is going to point us in the right direction! 900 lb bull in a canoe? Wow!!! I can't wait!!! |
RE: nubo's 2003 moosehunt
Bird hunt dog! that sounds pretty good 60" bull is one heck of a bull the one in our pic was 45" and about 1200 lbs ,good luck and I'll tell you your in for a lot of work since your portaging . we were lucky he was an easy out for us ,
