50 yard shots
I was out shooting today and decided to try some 50 yard shots. I was shooting to the right so I was off target slightly. I backed up to 50 yards and put a 12" diameter circle on a piece of paper and taped it to my Block. I went back and shot. 1st shot I hit a tree.[8D] Second shot I hit the bulls-eye. (Kinda easy huh being a 12" bulls-eye?:D) I decided to put a piece of tape in the center and put a 50 yard pin on. I slid the pin up on the site (they were at the bottom) and shot. I hit off to the right. (Perfect shot since I was shooting right). I kept shooting 2 inch groups and once touched arrows! I'm so happy. That is probably the best I have ever shot.:)

RE: 50 yard shots
I don`t advocate taking 50 yard shots at game but love shooting long distances on the range. If you have any mistakes, shooting at 50+ yards will point them out real fast!

RE: 50 yard shots
If I wanted to shoot a deer at 50 yards, I would buy a gun.:D

RE: 50 yard shots
50 yard shots are great for bringing out tuning and form problems. My max shot hunting ia 35 yards but I practice at 50 regularly. Good shooting Zak

RE: 50 yard shots
I'll shoot arrows at targets no matter how far off they are. I've done some pretty good shooting at over 150 yards with a longbow. "Pretty good" meaning getting several hits on a standing bear target dressed up like a Middle Ages Frenchman.;)
For hunting, I figure I haven't earned the right to even draw my bow until I've gotten well within 30 yards. |
RE: 50 yard shots
For hunting, I figure I haven't earned the right to even draw my bow until I've gotten well within 30 yards. I shoot out to 50/55 yds in practice all the time at my range but when I go to the clubs range anywhere from 80 to 120 yds. But thats at a target for hunting I limit my shots from 15 to 25 yds with my preference on the 15yds. An archer will see how far he can shoot accuratly but a HUNTER will see how close he can get to his prey;) |
RE: 50 yard shots
I like the 15-20 yard range.

RE: 50 yard shots
I practice out to 70+ yards just to make the 30 yarders seems like a "slam-dunk."
NEVER would I take a chance like that on a living animal with a bow--too much can go wrong. |
RE: 50 yard shots
I practice out to 70+ yards all summer and i will not pass up a 40 yard shot if the conditions are right, that last 6 years ,since I gave up the gun I have killed 13 deer with a bow, only 1 was less then 10 yards, most were 30+ and the longest was 42 yards, all the deer expired within sight or sound, adv died within 35 yards, i have only missed 1 deer and a really small tree I didn`t see got in its way, Zak, if you know in your mind you can take a longer shot and hit the boiler room everytime go ahead and take, I know lots of people who cant seem to hit a deer at 10 yards and their equipment is junk. I for one own a shop so my gear is in prefect shape, only a few arrows out of a dozen will get into my quiver with broadheads and thoes arrows will only get shot at aminals (never targets), so make sure your equipment is in prefect shape (tuned)

RE: 50 yard shots
I think the original post has gotten out of context but for those that think they can perform kill shots at 35 plus yds probably can. That being said, I would like for them to try this test. Tie a rope to your target and have someone pull it at the moment they tell you to shoot, or for that matter a split second after they tell you to shoot. Wonder how good your shooting is now? Did you hit the target? Even if you did, was it in the kill zone now? The arrow went right where it was suppose to just like you have practiced over and over again but the target (deer) moved or maybe even layed down. I can shoot at turkeys 70 yds away with a shotgun and get my share, but most would fly away wounded. Besides, both sports to me are to get them as close as is necessary for the type of weapon I am using for a 100 % kill shot knowing that this won't always happen (100 % kill) but at least I tried.

RE: 50 yard shots
50 yards is a breeze if you have been practicing at those ranges. good shooting though keep shooting further and further it will only make you better and if there is a 150 class buck walking by at 50 yards and you tell yourself you cannot shoot that far then you just missed a great chance at a very big buck dont listen to the majority of these people ( no offense) but if the conditions are right 50 yards can be a very high percentage shot
KEEP SHOOTING |
RE: 50 yard shots
Consistant 2 inch groups a fifty yards would get you on that olympic team for sure.

RE: 50 yard shots
I shoot out to 70yrds at the range as well ,but definetly not at something that can move at a split second . It definetly show's some form problem's which is good but it also help's you feel that much more comfortable at those shorter distances .

RE: 50 yard shots
i practice with my pse at from 25 to forty yards because im not very comfortably any farther than that.Im always weary about making a bad shot and never finding the animal, never done that but it could happen. Also my pse isnt even close to being a quality bow but it gets the job done...Im looking into getting the firestorm light with saved money,if anyone has one of those will you tell me about it.
p.s. good shootn zak.....much better than me[:@] thanks, shootr |
RE: 50 yard shots
Thanks- On my next shoot when I shoot 50 yards, I will probably do 10X as bad.

RE: 50 yard shots
"The majority of deer I have taken have been more than 30 yards"
That is odd I have been bow hunting for 20 years and I would say that 90% of mine have been shot inside 20 yards. Must have realy open woods were you hunt. |
RE: 50 yard shots
My wife went to the range with me last night while i was working on getting used to my new sight. I was happily shooting at the 25 yard target (paper animal target with a raccoon), when she says "honey shoot the elk target". So i look for the elk and see it attached to the 45 yard target and decide to give it a shot. Well since i only have the first 2 pins set i promptly sent the first arrow under the target and into the grass.
Fortunately it only took her about 30 seconds to find the arrow for me after i told her how much they cost :) after that i did pretty well. I need to get my short yardage act together first then i will start practicing the long shots. |
RE: 50 yard shots
I would explain why I've set myself a limit for 30 yards and under, but somebody would take offense and start in on that "holier than thou" BS. Suffice it to say I'm matured as a hunter well beyond the point where I feel I MUST make a kill to have a successful hunt.
