My Hunting Property in VA
This a place I've hunted for the past 3 years with a good friend of mine near Roanoke, VA. Just wondering where everyone thinks possible buck locations and funnels might be. I know the property pretty well however I've been unable to locate mature bucks as of yet. I'm not limited to this property as we have permission to hunt the adjacent properties as well. The dark foliage are pines and the lighter areas are hardwoods. A ridge line runs through the center of the property and is marked by the trail aparent on the map. The surrounding fields are pastures but we don't see many deer grazing in them. I often wonder if they're just fescue. The southern edge of the property through the woods is also lined with a 10-15 wide path that marks the bottom of the ridge. The north property line is also the aprroximate location of the bottom of the ridge. The total size of the property is approximately 90 acres. I'm working on adding more detail to the map such as places where large bucks have been spotted or where bucks have been harvested in the past. All suggestions and tips are welcome! Thanks,

Hokie3,
I don't live too far from Roanoke just in case you need some help hunting that property!!;) |

I like the looks of that area in the northeast part of the property...where the lighter color shows up, just east of that big field. Looks like a natural funnel to me.

hokie3,
It looks like the NW corner of your land is a potential funnel. I live in Roanoke. Where is this land? |
RE: My Hunting Property in VA
The land is in Botetourt County just east of Fincastle. I would love to invite all of you to hunt the property with me but it's my friends parents and I wouldn't feel right inviting somebody that they don't know out there. The property is actually for sale since his parents are retiring to the coast of NC. This may be my last fall hunting the property so I would like to give it my best effort this time around.

RE: My Hunting Property in VA
Well one spot that may be good is the transition zone to the west where the trail is, there area where the woods turn into hardwood. Not having actually been there it is hard to say, but I would concentrate on the areas where the pines and the hardwood come together, check for deer sign of course along these transition areas. Do you have a topo map? That and the ariel photo would make it a bit easier.
