Your thoughts on bows

I have been hunting with my bow for nine years. It is definately time for a change. My question is, what would be a good bow that does not cost a fortune? I only hunt whitetails. Also due to a back injury i have to limit myself to 50-60#'s. Thanks for any info.

You can find a good PSE for a good price. Depends on your spending limit. You can go to ebay and find a top of the line PSE or Archery Research for a good deal.

I LOVE my new Bowtech Liberty I just got. It is very smooth!!! But no matter what you get, make sure to check out as many bows as you can and find the one that fits and feels right to you.

Thank you for your thoughts. Bows have gotten more complex in nine years. Hard to know what is good. The only feature i think i definately have to have is a one cam system. Am i right in that respect? I would like to find something decent for under $300.

I would check out Martin's line. I've had a Martin Jaguar for 2 or 3 years now and really liked it. I only paid (bare bow) $235 for it brand new. There a nice, durable, and cheep.

Look at Martin, PSE and Reflex. They all have decent bows in the price range you're looking at.

There are very good used bows out there too, if you know enough about bows to pick the pearls from the poop. I see a lot of what used to be top of the line bows 10 years back that are going for under $100. The guy that shot the Texas state record whitetail here a couple years ago was shooting an old PSE he got in a pawn shop for a whopping $75.

Under $300 - PSE, Pearson 440 quad, Browning Tornado. Look at cabelas bargain cave under archery - plenty there!!

Check out Forge Bows at www.forgebow.com

I shoot the CW33 - short compact bow, weighs under 4 pounds, 35-63lbs draw weight, and 80% letoff.
Got mine for under $350 new.

Not really... The market seems to be migrating to the dual cam and hybrid cams. For a good economical bow.. check out the Reflex(Hoyt), Martin, Parker, Darton, ect...

But if you want the best bow for your $$$$... check out some used top of the line '03 bows.... that's what I'd do.

RE: Your thoughts on bows

I disagree with KBacon. yeah, hoyt and reflex are going with a cam and a 1/2, as is Archery Research. Two cams... nah...The PSE one cam bows are actually pretty good for the price. Martin makes a great bow. Theres a bunch of used Hoyt's and Mathews' at the pro shop i go to because guys trade up after a while. the bows are still good. check out your pro shop's used rack.good luck

Deerslayer_37... what do you disagree with? Just about every bow company at the ATA show had at least one hybrid or dually cam bow in their lineup except for Mathews.

I love my Mathew's FX and would have another Mathew's if this one ever wears out . . . or I find a good excuse to buy another.

Absent that, if I had to choose something other than Mathew's it would be a Martin!

RE: Your thoughts on bows

two cam bows are being made yes, but are they in demand? no. as far as hybrid cam bows, you still can't beat the simplicity of a single cam. after shooting both a hoyt cam & 1/2 bow and the Mathew's LX and outback, i would say a single cam is smoother and better than a hybrid. JMHO

Thanks for all your thoughts. I think i will make a trip to the archery shop to see what they have. I just want something more accurate than my old Bear bow. I have killed several deer with it, but i always limit myself to 20 yards or less. I would just like to be able to shoot out to 40 yards with confidence.

They're in demand as far as I'm concerned. I'm really enthralled by Martin's Nitrous dual cams. Good speed and an easy draw force curve.

After the last single I had, I took a blood oath that I'll never buy another single cam bow.[:'(] And I'm not too impressed with the hybrids either. [&:]

RE: Your thoughts on bows

I have nothing against Mathews bows... But it's a fact that the single cam is on it's way out.. otherwise.. why would EVERY company that had used primarily single cams in the past would be going to the hybrid or dual cams again? The "timing issues" that made the single cam soo popular have pretty much been negated w/ the better string materials that we have today. Single cams do go out of tune as much if not more than a dual or hybrid cam.. due to the long string and it's tendency to stretch (Zebra strings especially).

WhackABuck 07-11-2004 08:31 AM

RE: Your thoughts on bows

I agree with you fully...also the single cams have a tendancy to wear the servings at the idle wheel and cam due to the fact the string is not plum (actually angled) from the idle wheel down to the cam. I know this...I shoot a Mathew's and am looking at buying a dually Bowtech or Hoyt Vipertec

Deerslayer_37 07-11-2004 08:45 AM

RE: Your thoughts on bows

Shot a hoyt vipertec the other nite at the shop:eek:. IMHO, the hybrid cams are junk. just a fad...maybe i could be wrong. whatever, each to his own...i dont plan on getting rid of my Mathews solocam any time soon for hoyt or bowtech [&o]

longrifle1000,This is the time of year that alot of guys are trading in their bows on the "newest and greatest" bows,so contact your local "trusted"archery shop and let them know what you are looking for.I've seen, just in the past couple of days,an FX,a couple of Hoyts, and a bunch of PSE's,all under 325.00.Good Luck!!...Bob

If there's a junk bow out there today, I haven't shot it (and I've shot most of them). Many will favor one cam type or feature over another, but with today's technology, string materials and close tolerances built into most bows, the differences are smaller than ever. For the most part, the best bow is a matter of personal preference. Find a bow in your price range that you like the way it feels, have it sized correctly, tuned to your form, and you're likely to shoot equally well with whatever you end up with.

Good luck with your choice and have fun looking.

RE: Your thoughts on bows

Arthur, have you shot a Nitrous cam yet. I have the SlayR and the speed is incredible considering the ease of draw, especially for guys with the B cam. The Cougar Mag III is a good choice here. Only gives up 5fps to the SlayR (on paper) but costs about $160 less.

I have made the transition back to two cams after shooting single for about 7 years. Got tired of the cam lean snf sideways oscillation of the string. Makes bare shaft tunin galmost impossible. Not so with the two cams. And with the Nitrous the string actually passes through the center of the bow, not offset.

My SlayR is doing 293+ with a 3D setup. 280fps with hunting setup. 27.5" draw and 55lbs. Smoothly!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Your thoughts on bows

Well, i think i am going to wait until next January to buy my bow. I want to spend more money then i can right now. I just bought my wife her slug gun for this deer season, and i think the best thing to do is wait, and spend the money. I really like the bows from Bowtech. So i think i will do as much research between now and then, and make a educated purchase. Thanks for all your thoughts.

Parker EZ Draw 33, Mathews Icon, or even the new Parker Phoenix are all good choices.

If your worried about price the Mathews FX is a great bow for the money.
