The piece in Fastestbows.com caused quite a stir awile back. The author has written a follow up due to the great response he had.

Really, the guys that believe in the stuff are not going to be swayed. Others will pay the price just on the slim chance that the stuff MIGHT work. A whole lot more will buy the stuff simply because it's on the rack.

If carbon clothing didn't work then why are the sales of the stuff through the roof? It's been on the market for many years now and isn't going anywhere. People don't buy products that don't work....at least not over and over again.

I have to believe that Michael Corrigan's statement's are more accurate than the ads we read from the scent Loc manufacturers.

Does Scent Loc work? Perhaps it can make a small difference, who knows. How does one scientifically prove it without prejudice? How long does the activated carbon last? Again, how do we know? I would be willing to take the word of neutral entity doing a study than I would the carbon companies themselves.

It is really a great gimmick if you think about it. A placebo as it were, for us sick and fanatical bow hunters. A gadget that has caught on like a house a fire evolving into a miltimillion dollar industry. Like the old time snake oil salesman, it can't be definitively proved one way or the other. But we will stand in line with glazed over eyes, drool dripping from the corner of our mouth, and lay down our hard earned cash to take the "cure" for our whitetail problems. We are ripe for the picking my friends.

Two things come into play here Jason. What the people from scent lok are selling is confidence and yes people will continue to buy confidence. If it really works then show me. Quantify to me with some tangible physical evidence the benefits of carbon clothing after a couple of initial uses. You can't and neither can the people that buy it. But they feel like it works and that gives them confidence and confidence is one of the most important things that you can carry into the woods or onto the water. People are buying the sense of security that scent lok provides because any evidence they may have is purely circumstantial and or anecdotal. Saying people wouldn't continue to buy it is like saying people won't continue to play the lottery. Sure they will because they want to believe they can win. The odds against it are astronomical but deep down in their heart they want to believe it can happen to them. I know that scent lok will work for about 20 hours or so until the AC becomes saturated but after that I thinks it's rendered pretty much useless. JMO

I think with this whole carbon thing, all of us will have to agree to disagree. The guys that think it's BS will tell you up and down, turn their nose in the air, let out a sigh, all day long that it's a crock of sh*t and the guys that use it and believe in it(maybe it's bought confidence..who the hell cares) will swear buy it and continue to use it. To me, I use it.....believe in it and can afford to buy it. Am I the idiot? Some who know me will say yes. :D But I feel it is as important as most other pieces of gear I take out with me. That's why there is 6,000 different kinds of every piece of hunting gear you can imagine out there. People like different stuff. All it takes is one good experience with using/wearing that one "special" thing to make you to want to keep using it. Example....A guy I know shot a monster buck 30 min after he put coon piss on his boots. Guess what he does everytime he goes out hunting now? Different strokes for different folks.

With everyone raising a fuss about carbon suits and if they work or not, then what about scent killer sprays, cover scents, scent killing soap, and all that? Are they just gimmicks such as carbon suits? How well do they work?
I think all of this is just a matter of personal preference. Apparently the carbon suits work to some degree or you would not hear stories of people having deer downwind of them and acting like nothing is wrong.

If it gives a person confidence then so be it. And if a person has the money to spend on it then let them. I'm sure they can kill a big deer and someone who doesn't wear one can to. Alot of it is just being in the right place at the right time.

I think it was a well written piece based on science and fact. I really appreciate the the line about it works when wet,dry,hot or cold. Almost seems fraudulent to advertise in such a manner when science proves this to be incorrect. Oh well, Buyer beware;)

On the 2nd evening of bowseason last year I had 6 deer including an 8pt that would go 125, come in about 40 yards directly downwind of me. I took my climber instead of hunting my lock on because they skirted me the day before and the only decent tree that I could get in, I could only get up 12 ft. The deer came from a different direction than they did the first day and they wound up downwind and they were on a little rise so I was basically dead even with them, straight up wind. I was nervous and I kept thinking this is going to be over any second, but it wasn't. Those deer hung out for about 20 minutes and then slowly fed by. Unfortunately, the buck didn't feed by close enough.[:'(]

I think carbon suits work great for a little while. I just think they have a limited amount of usefullness and I have some serious doubts about the "reactivating" process and I am some doubts about there usefullness after the carbon is already soaked up all it can in sweat.

Seems like most of you say something to the effect that "carbon suits work to some degree, but not perfectly". To me, this sounds similar to a sales pitch for a faulty SDI system. "Our SDI system will take out 90% of the enemy's missiles, so how can you say it doesn't work?" Well, let's see, if the enemy throws 100 missiles at our city and your system takes out 90, then only ten hit the city and we're dead anyway.

Only, your body doesn't throw out 100 scent molecules, it throws out millions, and it only takes a trace for the deer to smell you. It all sounds like a shell game to me.

P.S. Silentassassin, I thought your first post on this topic really summed things up.
