Hot idea for bow season or not!

What do you think of Missouri bow season opening up on September 15th ?

"I know in years past" allot of the guys around here wait tell mid to late October and I've been hearing allot of guy's that did go the first of October say their still not going tell October because it'll be to hot out to take care of a deer if you did shoot one, not to say of setting in sweat

I love opening day but dang them mosquitoes are bad until around November.

I'm still there though October 1st with a big smile on my face. I've got air conditioning in my Tahoe and a great butcher just down the street. So I guess Mid September would be just as good.

Here in South Carolina, opening day is August 14. The average temperature for that date here is 90 degrees with around 80% humidity. Regardless of the heat, I'll be there early and often.

i agree with you, 6.5 carcano. i really don't think moving opening day back 15 days will do anything for population control. a lot of guys i know don't start hunting until the 3rd week of october. (i hunt from the beginning until the end myself!) but, hey, that just gives me 15 more days to do what i love, whether its a hot idea or not! :)

We open one Sept. 15 and if we don't get a frost it can be a bit buggy. It really depends on the area. In the swamps where the skeeters are so thick I'd pass till after a few heavy frosts. On the other hand the warm temps don't bother me, except I would'nt leave a deer over night. I just quater them up and hang them in the spare fridge.

So you guys hunt in your swim trucks in August or what?

Our season starts Oct. 1..........buggy as H and fairly warm. Needless to say bug spray and light clothes are a necessity!

I won't waste my time until November. I can shoot deer every hunt but the huge deer won't be out during shooting hours until the rut. Don't screw up your areas until the rut and be patient. For you all in SC, go everyday. :D

Maryland opens Sept. 15th and has for as long as I can remember.
The morning's are usually cool and nice to hunt but the evening's
bring on the bug's. I don't mind as long as I am out there hunting.

Well I was out there every year for the opener on Oct. 1 so I'm going to be out there Sep 15.

And no it wont do a thing to up the harvest numbers..

What I like is usually around here the deer start changing patters more and more right around the beginning of Oct so my be I'll have 10 or so days to catch a buck doing the same old thing day after day...:);)

Our opener is around Sept 15th also. It can be hot and muggy, but I just can't stand to sit in the house when I know I can be out hunting. Plus those doe that we need to thin out are about as easy to pattern as pie until they switch into the fall patterns. You can set your watch to when your going to see them. The only drawback is like Fieldmouse said, you can put your big old boy into a nocturnal pattern way before you even know it in late Sept.-early Oct. Plus's and minus's to it all. I know many guys that won't even go out till late Oct for that simple fact.

Bow hunting in September for Whitetails....Not gonna do it! That would mean I am not hunting elk. Can't live with that thought! [:o]

Come October you can bet I will spend all the time I can in a tree right on through November into the first week of December when gun season opens. :D

You guys that are complaining about the season opening to early should have your heads examined. I wait from the last day of the season for the next season to open and if it was 100 degrees I would be sitting in a stand. As far as forcing bucks nocturnal early in the season it is the easiest time to pattern bucks. Most of them feeding on a time schedule and route before the hormones kick in.September or October for the start of the season you are still going to be sitting in the woods before the start of the rut. Besides I have never seen a buck in rut let a hot doe pass buy just because it was light out.

Wimps... if you can hunt you should.[8D] Ya'll know Len and I started hunting the first week in February. What's a week or two. Go hunting. Just plan on having to take care of the deer immediately if it's hot. Whack 'em,... Stack' em... bone 'em... eat 'em.

Davidmil,

I got one better for you. I have about 5 families that love venison, but for various reasons can't get their own. When I stick one, I'm on the cell phone with them all to see who's home and is ready for one. All I have to do is gut em out....wash em out and drop em off on their front door step. They all know how to care for the meat, so that's not a concern and none of it goes to waste. Now how's that for convienence(sp?). :D All it costs me is $12.50 for over the counter intensive harvest tags.

Stump..... LEN has a list of about 20 people waiting for deer meat.

I am going to have to call your bluff on this one Mouse. The biggest deer shot in Oklahoma last year was on opening morning on Oct. 1st. So, not all the big ones stay layed up until rut. I have seen some of the biggest deer I have ever seen in Aug. and Sept. by watching their late summer feeding pattern. Not all the big boys are nocturnal at the first of the season, I have prove with my game cam and video.

YUP... an awful lot of big deer drop dead before November.

I dont care how hot it is I WILL be hunting on the first weekend. You can pattern big bucks which makes hunting them a hell of a lot easier i have more trouble patterning bucks after the acorns are falling. people like hunting during the rut which is great becasue deer are moving constantly and you can screw up and still kill that big buck but if you really want to kill your big buck the best way to do it is to scout by glassing fields find where he is coming out put your stand up and kill him the first time you sit the stand. plus i love the look of deer in velvet which there is a pretty good chance of finding some in sept.

RE: Hot idea for bow season or not!

I think its great, yeah well have to endure some heat but its almost as good as the rut for taking mature bucs. Think of all the bucks still running in bachelor groups and very patternable that time of year cause they are in green feilds every evening. This time of year the bucks are not worried about being seen and will come out into feilds before dark sometimes 5 or six together, all I have to do is find the right field and where they are coming in, and hope it all comes together.
