Who has Eaten Fawn?
I have and if i could, i woudlnt shoot anything else... but I stick to Big bucks.... and some does...
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I have heard it is excellent eating but I never have.
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
Never eaten a true fawn (from the spring drop and taken and eaten within 7 weeks)
But I have tasted deer less than one year old...and I think that's what you meant. Unbelievably tender and sweet..almost free of game taste altogether. But melt in your mouth tender. But seems like wasteful to the deers life and a lot of work for so little meat....BUTthen again, it's no different than veal in that sense..more expensive per pound but higher quality product in tenderness and mild quality. |
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
Depends on what you consider a fawn. I have killed 5-6 month old deer in October or November that were fine eatin'. I guess you could call them fawns although they had lost their spots already.

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
Is fawn anything like veal?

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
As far as I am considered , its a fawn until after its birthday... But i did mean, 5-6 month olds
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
But to answer your question, I have never eaten a fawn
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
where i live, Upper Pennisula of Michigan, we get some SEVERE winters and we have some Little deer going into the winter sometimes, that would never make it, so might as well take some of them and eat them...
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I can, but I dont' LIKE TO...
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I'd rather take a 5 month old fawn any day of the week when it comes down to good eats :D
P.S. I love veal too :D |
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
Are you guys talking about those cute little things:eek::eek::D
If its tender and tastes good - it aint worth shooting[:o]:D;) |
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I've had one of my own that I hit with my s-10 pickup in 1990 on my way back from setting my treestand in mid Sept. It dove under the truck and smacked its head on my bumper. Died instantly with NO MEAT DAMAGE.
I tried calling the State Police but couldn't get them to respon...so I just gutted it and trew it on the roof in a tarp and the night air was actually pretty cool that night. So with the ride home at 70+mph it was cooled quickly. Best deer I have ever eaten, tenderness wise...and maybe the best tasting to boot. It was actually quite light in color (the meat that is) |

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
One good thing about shooting a fawn is that no dragging is required. You can just tuck it in your game pack with the pheasants and squirrles! :D
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
You can just tuck it in your game pack with the pheasants and squirrles! I haven't ever shot one with spots !! But those young 6 mnth (60+/- lbs)ones do make for some great eatin' !! |

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I saw menu that a fellow chef who visited Singapore brought back. The highest price entree was Venison Embryo in Placenta sack. He didn't try it but a buddy did and said it was excellent.
He said they cut a hole in the placenta and removed the fetus, seasoned and seared and place back in the placenta and added an aromatic broth and tied a knot where they cut to re-seal it and poached it from there. he said it came to the table and you could see the little deer inside a big balooned out transparent placenta and the waiter popped it at the table and the smell wafted through the dining room. That kind of fawn?:D:D |
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I shot a deer just out of spots last September, by far the best eating deer I have ever tasted. The meat is white, tender and nothing like venison. I will take another given the chance this September in that age group. I however will try to exclude any button bucks if possible, maybe.

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
I really no longer eat deer, but when I did you couldn't beat a bambi cut into steaks. I still shoot them from time to time and always take the bambi out of the herd. They are lighter (30 - 40 #s) a lot easier to deal with. I will make it into jerky and give it away to friends. There are a few spots that I won't shoot anything until late in the season if it's not huge. Other spots I know I won't see anything huge so then I will shoot a bambi no matter what time in the season it is.

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
Never had the opportunity to shoot a fawn, don't know if I would when I get a chance.

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
Had it once last year. Opening day a dguy I work with took a fairly young doe. It actually still had a couple spots on it's rear. He shot it not realizing how young it actually was. Best tasting venison I ever had. Didn't get much meat off it though!

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
The big ones go to friends, the little ones go to MY freezer. I've actually had friends try to take the smaller ones when I've got a few in the back of the truck. No way, I say!;)

RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
One night on our way back from State College we were like the "Meat Wagon"......we picked up 2 road kills that happened right in front of us. One a nice buck and the other a fawn with still faint spots.......oh what a guilty pleasure that young one was.[:-]:D I could have eaten the whole thing myself. Did I?;)
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
i think the best deer to eat is a nice healthy 90 pound 6 month old female deer, let those button bucks go if you can.
|
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
PL,
You got some big deer in KY huh? [:-] We're lucky here in PA if a 6mo. doe weighs in at 45lbs. In fact a 90-100lb doe is a mature animal here. |
RE: Who has Eaten Fawn?
All i can say is the fawns here(under 1 year)is the best eating, you can actually cut it with a fork---YUMMY:)
