How long is my spare string still good?

I'm looking at maybe getting new strings and cables for my LEGACY only because it's going on three years for the factory strings.Should i keep the factory string as a backup?How long can a string sit before it's too old to use?Or maybe there is nothing to worry about?

Wax it well - put it in a zip lock bag and just keep it from excessive moisture and heat and it should last a long time
