Bowhunting for geese???
I want to shoot a goose with my legacy this fall and I was wondering if anyone else has shot a goose or tried to with their bow? If so what worked best for you?

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
I had a client in Ohio that does bow hunt for geese. My schedule hasn't allowed me to get out with him but I am very interested in the shot. It's done but I sorry I can't give you any advice.
Good luck! |
RE: Bowhunting for geese???
That is a really good question. Is it legal? The gesse $hit all over the lawn at our lake lot and we were wondering if it would be legal to shoot them with the bow from the trees when it is season.

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
Why do you think it would be hard they come to edge of the corn/hay field.( yes that would be considerd ground swatting) The thing that bugged me is you bow tag is small game tag here in wi. but they wont give you a spot on your bow tag to put the stamp.....and I tryed to argue the point.

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
I never had hunted geese, but there are thousands i see every day, i am wanting to hunt them, people say there greasy birds though, also i wouldnt shoot one with a bow if i were to hunt them this year, what if it flies like a turkey after the shot and that bird flys over a highway or something? You would never be able to get in back. I think a shotgun is a more effective way to kill them if ya ask me brother.

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
I live in WI and I have take geese with my bow. It is legal and it is not all that difficult as one might think.
The first time I did it was on a Deer hunting trip and as I left my stand mid day I had a low flying flock coming my way. I was hunting with my recurve and I knew I had a safe drop area for the arrow if I missed and I let fly. Granted I was aiming at the first goose and hit the third but I was just as thrilled. Since then I have taken several more, mostly decoyed into a field on my brothers land and taken on the ground from a blind shortly after they landed. They as you all know have sharp eyes and present a small target but it is fun. |
RE: Bowhunting for geese???
We hunt geese with shotguns over decoys every year, I just decided that this year I want to take one with my bow. I was thinking about doing what logs did and let them land in the decoys. I have a portible blind so I should be able to get a shot off.
Thanks for the info. I would be happy to get more. |

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
i think that it legal about everywhere, if you can gun hunt it you can bow hunt it. sounds like fun stuff but could get really expensive. arrows arent cheap

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
We do a lot of bow hunting for geese here in Mass. Especially the ealy season "local bird" hunt. It allows us to get out a month before anything else opens and get some time behind the bow shooting at game and we can shoot 5 a day. Spot and stalk is always fun, they have sharp eyes and you have to be perfect to get within bow range when they are feeding in a field. If you are finding they ALWAYS bust you and you want a little meat for the freezer try this technique I watched an old timer use once. He grabbed his bow by one end and entered the field from the complete opposite side, moving it over the ground as if it was a metal detector. Moving very slowly he made wide zig ziags in the general direction of the geese. By taking about 40 minutes to get close they didn't spook at all, then at about 25 yards, he stopped. Grabbed his bow, knocked an arrow and drew .. they were getting nervous .. but just stood there and watched him till he took a big one and they all went skyward.
We'll stalk them on water as well, because it's warm we'll enter the cattails and slink through till we're close. Arrows float so when you hit them they don't go far, and they are as easy to retrieve as the dead geese are. In the fall I'll sometimes take my bow in the blind with me as I've often seen deer while duck and goose hunting. I've tried taking them just as they hit dirt and been successful from time to time, they usually bust you drawing though. The main reason we started hunting geese with a bow is that getting permission for this type of hunting is even easier than asking to shoot coyotes here in the east. Nobody likes the mess geese leave .. and once they lose their fear of people, they become quite aggresive. I've had some of the most anti-hunting people ASK me to kill the geese on their property, and as long as I can hunt deer and turkey to I oblige them. |
RE: Bowhunting for geese???
MA Jay, i think you have the whole goose whacking thing down, thanks for the info!!!

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
I couldn't even image trying to shoot a bird while its in the sky, i can hardly hit a animal on the ground lol. I figured once i get better at shooting, then i'll try something like that. Bowfishing is next on my list. I was watching this show the other day when this guy was bowhunting pheasant and got about 4 of them (it was a special hunt i guess) i was in awe about that [:-]

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
I have shot pheasants and geese in the air with my compound bow. pheasants are tough with a compound bow b/c you dont know when they will fly and you have to break over the cam. i hear recurves are easier for flying objects. geese are easy to shoot in the air when they are coming toward you with their wings cupped b/c you can actually use a pin. and geese are very big. it gets expensive buts it is well worth the fun try flu flu arrows they do go as far.

RE: Bowhunting for geese???
What kind of license do you need in Michigan to arrow a goose? To shoot them with a gun you need small game and a water fowell/duck stamp!!?? I think
And what is the season????? |
