Back Tension

I was told by a pro shooter to use back tension when I release. Right now I just squeeze the trigger and it goes off. I can get 1/2 inch groups by squeezing the trigger. If I can shoot like that now, should I use backtension?

Because someday you'll develope a target panic and will wish you did.

I thought you had to get a special back tension release? Mantis not everybody developes target panic.

yep, I wouldn't worry about it, unless you are planning on making a career out of archery. at your age, if you haven't developed target panic, then you probably won't. Keep the 1/2 inch groups.

I agree but think that’s because many people don't shoot often. If zak likes to shoot his bow(and it seems he does) and he shoots often, he has a greater chance of developing some form of target panic.

Couldn't be further from the truth! I was just like Zak at his age being one hell of a shot. I was taught to squeeze the trigger on my release. As I got older I shot more and practices more often. The target panic snuck up on me like a bad habit. My ability to squeeze was replaced with the reflex of punching the trigger.

I'll finish up later I got a 3D shoot.

Mr. Longbeard, I don’t believe I read anywhere above where it said to switch to a back tension release.

thenuge, you don’t need a “special back tension release” in order to shoot with back tension.

Dude no your not don’t listen to him. It’s obvious you have a lot of interest in bowhunting and archery. Learn all you can and never stop learning. Keep asking the questions and take what people say in stride. You can be as good as you want to be.

Just to finish up from earlier, I switched to using the back tension method and my groups are tighter than ever and my scores soared! Archery is a lot more enjoyable when you’re not beating yourself up over punching the trigger. I wish I'd learned how to use the release the right way in the beginning.
