sight or target?
When shooting your bow do you look at your sight or your target? I have heard it both ways but wasnt sure which one you sould really do. thanks for the help

RE: sight or target?
Target, you can't hit what you aren't looking at.
|
RE: sight or target?
don't know if I am right or wrong, but I look at the target, and naturally you can see the sight on it, like I am looking thru the sight.

RE: sight or target?
thanks for the help guys iv always looked at the sight but will try looking at the target from now on.

RE: sight or target?
I think I tend to focus more on the sight pin though the target does look blurry in the background. I have not thought about it lately but can see where focusing on the target and letting the pin instinctively center itself may be the better route to follow.

RE: sight or target?
Make sure you are shooting with both eyes open and focus on the target. You will find it much easier to shoot. At first use one eye to get level and open your second once you have. Pretty soon you won't even have to think about it.

RE: sight or target?
Target and let the pin start to fade over center.
|
RE: sight or target?
If you are shooting a pin and peep site method, focus on your site pin.
If you shoot pin and no peep, focus on your target. If you don't shoot pins, focus on your target. |

RE: sight or target?
Target only, both eye's open! If you look at you sight the target will become blurry. Also you can't follow through with the shoot when focusing on the sight. With just one eye open you can't see your arrow flying strait or fish taling.

RE: sight or target?
Both eyes open? never heard of that. have always just used one eye myself
|
RE: sight or target?
I used to shoot with one eye open as well but went to both eyes open last year. Makes a big difference! I focus on the target and let the pin center itself.
|
RE: sight or target?
I am trying to get used to the "both eyes open" method myself. I think this is the better method, it just a little tricky with a bow. That is how I shoot my handguns, both eyes open and looking at the target.

RE: sight or target?
I wish I could remember who had said this quote, "If it's really big, both eyes shut":D:D:D
|
RE: sight or target?
I use a peep sight and one pin. I do better with both eyes open and focus on the target.
|
RE: sight or target?
I always focus on the target!:D

Zak123-
You asked if you focus on the target, is this wrong. No it is not wrong at all. As you can tell from all the different answers here, there is no "right" answer. I will say that for me and the competitive shooters I shoot with, we all use the focus on the site pin method. I am sure in my case it is a result of years of shooting competitions with rifles and pistols as well as archery. I'll say this, if your goal is to shoot 3" groups at 20 yards any method with practice should get you to this goal. If you would like to get to the point where you can not shoot 2 arrows at the same point because you know at best you'll be gluing on a new fletching, at worst you'll be ripping apart a robin hood, then I would suggest trying the focus on pin method. I question why anyone who focuses on the target would bother with a rear peep, as it becomes useless unless you are focusing on centering the front site in it with each shot. I think many people use it as an adhoc form adjuster .. when it really works great for what it was designed for, a rear site aperture. |

I shoot w/ both eyes open, w/o a peep sight. I do make use of a "No-peep" to keep my form in check. Generally I check my target, look at the pin and place it on the target, look at the target again and then shoot. I don't know if this will help of only help to confuse you. Either way good luck and good shooting.:) |

RE: sight or target?
I use the both eyes open and focusing on the pin and the target.NIETHER is blurry. It is really a method of focusing on the target but like someone stated earlier, get centered and level with one eye and then open the other. The pin will automatically superimpose itself on the target and they will both me in focus.BUT you must shoot both eyes open to achieve this.
I will tll you that all the coaches I have talked to along with professional shooters reccomend focusing on the target. I just got through with a very productive practice session and can tell you that this works.;) |
RE: sight or target?
I focus on the target but shoot one eye open. I am left eye dominant and shoot right handed so I can't shoot both eyes open.
|
RE: sight or target?
Mez I'm left eyed too but I shoot both eyes. Just took some practice. It's worth it.
|
RE: sight or target?
So let me get this straight you can shoot with both eyes open even if you shoot with a peep sight?
|
RE: sight or target?
YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!
Just look at any picture of a pro and you will see they are shooting both eyes open in just about every case, unless they are shooting the wrong hand verses eye dominance. That is very hard to accomplish,in most cases you would be better off to go with the dominant eye and switch hands. |
RE: sight or target?
You can keep both eyes open with a peep as long as you are not shooting cross dominant, so if you are right eye dominant shoot right handed. It can be done cross ways, but would take work.
I shoot pins, peep, both eyes open focus on the target. I get settled at full draw, line pin up on target then just focus on the target, the pin will float to there as long as you let it. Like MA Jay said, both ways will work, I will say that the top level shooters I have talked to all shoot both eyes open focus on the target, not the pin. --Bob |
RE: sight or target?
I focus on the target. But then, I don't have any sights on my bow anyway...
|
RE: sight or target?
What ever works the best.I found out If I just stare a hole thru the spot on the animal or target where I want the arrow to hit.

RE: sight or target?
As Ma Jay stated above - there is not right/wrong answer
In competitive target archery many (not all) shooters focus on the dot/pin, reson being the dot in your 6X scope covers sometime the entire gold circle, so you don't see the X you're aiming at anyway. Also the lens, as it magnifies the target, magnifies the movement of your bow, trying to hold tiny dot/pin at the X will drive you nuts and may cause torque. When hunting you're better off to pic a spot on the animal, don't loose it, and rely on almost automatic peep/sight alignment. "don't shoot at the animal, shoot at the spot" I personally like my peep set up so as I anchor at full draw my peep encircles the round housing of my sight without any effort on my part. I find it more difficult to center the pin in the peep, that's why I use hunting sights with round housing. Just my 2 cents. |
