RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Hey SH91, Well done brother.
I eat what I shoot...I don't do it for pleasure....never have and never will.... there are other ways of getting rid of the problem rather than using a live animal as TARGET PRACTICE SH I encourage you to keep shootin squirells cos it will only make you a better or should I say more accurate and efficient hunter. RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Ok, I'm not one to usually jump in on stuff like this, but I feel obligated to.
First off, I never read anywhere in SH91's post that HE laughed at the kill. It clearly states that his neighbor friend was laughing his head off. Maybe this means you should direct your flame at his neighbor? Secondly, why is it so bad to laugh after one heck of a shot on a very small target (or any target for that matter)?! I know after every animal I shoot, I laugh histerically! Does it mean that I disrespect the animal? NO! It is just the way that I express my happiness. BTW, I also do a little jumping up and down and let out a couple "yee-haws". I fully respect the animals that I take and thank the Lord each and every time I get the chance to. Thirdly, varmits are varmits, no matter how you put it. If you have to kill em, kill em. Do it with a bow, be proud that you were able to stay true with the shot. Fourthly, Everybody needs to lighten up. Adults as well as kids. Yes it is wrong to disrespect your elders, but to sit and condemn a kid for shooting a chipmunk?! C'mon. Fifthly, Whoever said that they don't hunt for pleasure is full of B.S.! Bottom line. Whenever Hunting starts to be boring and no fun at all, it's time to hang up the bow. Why do it if you don't enjoy it? (of course there are circumstances that some people absoutly need the meat) Obviously the killing part of hunting is not fun, but to be able to look at your trophy and feel the sense of acomplishment is absoutly undescribable. SH91, relax bud. Be proud of your shot. Keep shooting. These guys are full of great advice and OPINIONS. Take what you will with a grain of salt, but always listen, think, then respond. I could see where your anger was coming from. Expressing it the way you did probably wasn't the best way. The reality of your story is aparent in your first post. You could have sugar coated it by leaving out some details, but you didn't. I agree with putting the chipmunk out of its misery and not letting it suffer. You will learn how to write better, more compelling stories as you go. Everybody else, Think about when you were 12..... It may enlighten you as to what this young man was going through the day that he killed the chipmunk. Maybe you weren't killing nusience squirrles, maybe you were stomping on crickets or palmetto bugs (if your from down south) and were having the time of your life.... Think about it. Enough of the flame. For some reason this thread got me fired up. Be safe out there, -BJ |

[Well, I eat what I shoot...I don't do it for pleasure....]
Well all I can say is I've hunted for 20 some years now and have NEVER met anyone who HAS to hunt to survive. I'm almost certain that's not the intented message from that quote but it sure sounds like it. Like I said in my previous post if we would all stand up to the people who want to destroy OUR sport and quit letting the MINORITY make the rules for the MAJORITY, this country would be much better off. So quit pondering over what the ENVIROMENTALIST, PETA, and other groups of there kind think about what we do for enjoyment because we out number them by a lot, I just wish they would do something to wake the sleeping giant and be put in the place where they belong. |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Squirrelhunter-
Tough shot you pulled off. Not far off from how I started 20 + years ago with a bow. I think you have received enough advice on how you should think and act after you kill something, so I'll give you something I learned from my similar experience. Ask Dad or Mom to get you some judo or blunt tips. Those field tips just punch a hole and will never kill anything, as you found out with your first bowkill. Same thing happened to me. Plus, if you are going to be flinging arrows at that other chipmunk .. you'll end up needing a lot of new arrows soon if you don't get some decent blunts. You'll also be able to practice on pine cones and other stuff. |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
I'm not going to beat on anyone with this one. I will say I took out a half zillion little and lesser critters in my youth. I took out a lot of things I wouldn't consider whacking today. I think it's a progression of many folks. You want to shoot a tweet... have at it. In todays world of being Politically Correct, the laws etc... it's probably best not to advertise it though. I'm positive all the little buggers I killed as a kid help me in my quest to eliminate all the North Vietnamese in I Corp and probably aided in my woods savey immensely. Congrats on a great shot. I've shot enough tweets to feed the world but I wouldn't think of it today. You too will come to that point someday. I'd venture to say that most every kid has whacked something they wish they could take back. Chipmunk taste better with a pepperoni pizza under it.

RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Squirrelhunter,
Don't let some of these guys get you down, I don't know of any one that didn't shoot tweety's with the BB gun, and I shot and shot at plenty of critters with my bow when I was a kid. I grew up in a small town of around 100 people, mostly older retired people they always were after me to take care of the rabbits in town so I shot them with my bow and a .22 IN TOWN I was always careful where I was shooting. I don't think that was such a good Idea (the .22). I now live out in the country a I'm sure my kids will shoot their share of sparrows, starlings and whatever else offers them a shot. Keep practicing but just don't post it, some here are perfect!:) Oh Yea I forgot. How many people eat the coyote, badgers, skunks, coon, crows, prairy dogs, or any other varments they kill? Although racoon is pretty tastey but a little tough! seriously! |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Davidmil hit it exactly. I have killed just about anything that chirped and sqeaked in my youth, starting when i got my first pellet gun. Thier was a time early when i realized that killing something just for the satisfaction of killing it was wrong. Maybe it is a right of passage that we all go through...from some of the replies on this topic, some of us have never GRADUATED.
You wanna kill chipmunks? Kill all you want, do something with it, eat it, make a glove or a hat, but dont kill a living thing just to kill it? I hope you dont consider this reply a kick in the head...It isnt. But you dont get a pat on the back from me. Take care and good hunting |

some of you guys seem to be saying that shooting the animal isnt fun. to me all hunting is fun. it keeps me off drugs and alcohol. i do believe the chase is the best part and doing it safely is very important. |

RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Congratulations SH91, that is an impressive shot. I also enjoyed your strory, it was told with total honesty. A quality that is being lost in our age of political correctness. You have nothing to be ashamed of for what you did, nor should you have to tell the story that way. This is a hunting message board, tell it like it happened and be proud of it. I didn't feel your replies were that out of line, most were as mature and intelligent as the so called adults flaming you. Hang in there, IMO the future of our sport is in good hands with kids like you.

RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
this has to be the most ridiculous thing ive read on here in a long time,,, the only thing i have a problem with is sh91 cussing out another mod, a blatant violation of the rules once again being broken by him, but i would almost bet that everyone here has killed a small animal at least once in his or her life that noone knows about or cares about, back off off him he has a dad who has the job of putting him in his place on this and any other matter, seems if his dad is going to help skin it then he doesnt have a problem with sh91's actions,, nuff said oh BTW MATT I AGREE WITH YOUR POSTS,,,,

RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
i opened my window real quietly and slowly, then got the screen open, put my release on, nocked an arrow, put my 15 yard pin on the middle of the chipmunks back, then i let that arrow fly. |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Whats so ridiculous about seasoned MATURE hunters advising a young man that he shouldnt use live animals as target practice?????
Maybe his daddy should be a little more concearned how his 12 yr old son spends his time on the net in a adult forum cussing out other members. |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
rico i should have been a bit more clearer in my wording, the thing i find ridiculous is sh91 posting this,, just gave him another thread to pad his posts,,

RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Me and my son were fishing today. A cottonmouth came swimming along the bank. I let it get out a ways and shot it with my .17. It flipped it completely out of the water, did a twist, and landed back in the water.
We laughed our ass's off. |

Bow hunted for 11 years, gun hunted for 18 years.

RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Squirrel hunter, as you get older, you'll learn a bit about being "politically correct". I see nothing wrong about what you did. It's just that when you post it on a forum, you can expect a lot of flack from those who don't view things the same. Many will pick out certain words that you use, and feel the need to reprimand you. Killing things, is a touchy subject, even among hunters.
I remember being 12 (vaguely), and I would have to say, the most fun I ever had was getting my BB gun for Christimas, and going out and hunting small animals with it. I hardly ever shot anything big enough to actually eat, though I tried on a few of them. I desperately wanted to be like my Dad, to bring home the meat for dinner. It was a learning process, and it didn't take long for me to grow into a real hunter. After just a couple years, I never shot anything I couldn't eat, unless it involved varmit or predator control. I saw this same progression with many of my friends. Even so, to this day, if some varmit is eating my garden, I will kill it. It sounds to me like you are a good kid and although I wouldn't worry about shooting garden-raiding varmits, I'd probably emphasize the "raiding" part of the post, instead of the killing part. Like I said, killing is a touchy subject, even around here. It's good to learn the art of tip-toeing through some subjects. |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Congrats on a damned fine shot Joe ,
maybe someday I'll be able to shoot as well . BTW , thanks for crushing it's head when you saw that it wasn't dead , very sportsmanlike . I would have done exactly the same so that the poor thing wouldn't suffer longer , had to do the same with a kitten my younger brother crippled once . Don't let the PC police get to you , some folks are a little sensitive when it comes to blood , unless they're the ones spilling it . ;) Dig into the archives and look at some of their less than PC posts , you'll get plenty of chuckles if you do . |
RE: My First Bow Kill!!!!
Here's my 2 cents on the issue. My beef has nothing to do with SH91's shot or anything else. it's all the people that claim he ought to respect his elders.
My thoughts on that issue are thus: I give no one respect that does not give it to me. Just because Squirrel is 12 does not mean that a guy who is 40 is allowed to disrespect him. And it works both ways. I remember when I was a kid and in Indian Guides, our group was playing basket ball or dodge ball or something similar. One of the dad's continually made fun of me until I stopped the game and chewed his butt. His argument to my dad was that my dad ought to teach me to respect my elders. Well, I figured that this wasn't my dad's beef, it was mine. I told him that he wasn't my elder. My Dad was my elder. I respected my Dad. I didnt' respect people that made fun of little kids (probably 8 at the time). if he had treated me with respect as most of the dad's did, I would have NEVER said anything of the sort. So, the whole "elder" argument doesn't hold up with me. I don't care if you are 14 or 84...if you don't show me respect, you won't get it from me. I think that everyone that has been harsh to SQ91 needs to lighten up. He posts here and does a fantastic job. let his father worry about raising him. You have no idea about what his father told him after he killed the chipmunk. You have no idea whether his father instills in him a need to thank God for the kill, which by the way, is not necessary for everyone. so, ease up a bit --- if anyone needs to I think it is all the people judging squirrell. beej |
