Why a Recurve or Compound?
First hi to all that read this I am new to this forum! I have shot stick and string mostly for fun my whole life from making my own rubber band bows and sticks for arrows as long as I can remember. Here's my question why is it that every time I go to a 3D shoot or my archery club we have to gig the other person in there choice of shooting styles. Me I like to shoot all style of archer from long bow to recurve to compound with or with out sights or a release. I am totally impressed when I see someone shoot both style and hit there mark everytime or just outside of it! Is long bow or recurve harder then a compound no there not as long as you practice. Practice to me is the key to archery it doesn't matter what type of bow you use as long as you practice with that bow. As far as style of bow as long as you practice you can hint the target or take down what every you are hunting. My point is let focus on the fact we all love to shoot stick and string and before we comment on something lets first try and shoot each style.
NOT ONE STYLE IS BETTER THEN THE OTHER JUST THE PERSON WHO IS SHOOTING!!! |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
I AGREE TOY, I THINK WE ARE LOSING SIGHT OF WHAT WE LOVE TO DO WHICH IS SHOOTING A BOW. REGARDLESS OF WHAT STYLE. THANKS FOR THE POST

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
I agree. There is only one type of bow. Stick and string. Let the fighting end.:D

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Personally, I do not see many traditional guys at the local shoots...except for the bigger archery "festivals" each summer. I have no problem shooting with them and would actually be more interested in seeing their shooting style.

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
At our club trad. archery is comeing back! Alot of guys including myself are now going to have a recurve leauge night next winter. I'm really looking forward to that , it's going to be a blast. :D

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
I shot compounds for 12 years. One summer I picked my mid 1990's bow up and shot really, really well and thought, damn, there is really no challenge to shooting this anymore (and todays compounds wax the compound I was shooting then). So the challenge of archery shooting was gone, I didn't even like it anymore.
And then I got a longbow. WHOA ! One arrow out of 20 going where I wanted it to. Focus, release, hold, stance, ... man if it wasn't ont thing it was another! And then every now and then that one shot hitting that coke can - wow, what a great feeling ! I loved archery again, I shoot all the time because I like it, and I still aint that good of a shot ! |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Why a recurve or a compound? Why a truck or a car. To some, it's a way to get from point A to B, or a way to kill an animal. Nothing wrong with that at all - take your pick.
I personally like shooting my recurve over my compound - for pure shooting enjoyment - because of the challenge. I like the stick and string because there is hundreds of millions of dollars of gadgets on the wall of every archery shop that does not apply to me at all - saves me money. If you like that sort of thing, cool. Go for it. I hunt with my compound because my consistency with the recurve is not where I want it or consider it to be in order to hunt. That is my fault - I do not practice enough with the recurve. Good thing we have compounds available for those of us that only practice the day before the season.;)[:@][:'(]:D:D |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Frank, come on down and visit at our club, if you're ever in the neighborhood some Thursday evening. Last week, we had 20 shooters at our Thursday night fun shoot. Only 3 were shooting compounds. We had a good time in spite of them. [8D]

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Believe it or not we are a small breed of people that enjoy the sport of Archery |

Toycrazy. A sense of humor goes a long way toward understanding. Try it sometime.

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
I do, I also laugh at the joke that are made! But not every one does laugh when they don't see the joke! [:@]I also believe you have to be able to laugh at yourself before you can laugh at someone else! My point is have fun shooting your bow and respect your fellow archer next to you and his choice of equipment! |

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Compound shooter steps up to the stake at 9:15 am after glassing target for 3 minutes. He has controlled breathing, stares at the target ... and backs up a step. He shakes himself off, back to the stake at 9:17 am, clips the release to the string, stares at the target ... and back away. 9:18 am compounder once again approaches stake, stares at target, clips on release, holds the bos poised to draw ... and backs away again. He references his cheat sheet McKenzie target guide on his hip, makes mental adjustments and once again moves to the stake. 9:22 am, compounder raises his bow, draw and settles in on his target. 9:23 am compounder releases - SOB ! Yes, its a 12 but not an "X" and compounder walks away in disgust.
============ Recurve shooter walks to stake at 9:15:00 am, sees target and nocks an arrow. 9:15:10 recurve shooter concentrates, draws and releases. Wood shaft flies low and slinters into a dozen pieces right under the target - recurve shooters laughs as does his buddies, just another fun day shooting. Theres the difference ....... :) |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Theres the difference ....... We're hunters, and do 3D strictly as practice for hunting. Hold for more then 5 seconds and someone is bound to start mess'in with you. It might start with someone clearing their throat, followed by a comment like, "where you going to find a deer that will let you aim that long before releasing? Must be you got a license for a cage hunt this year." In our group, it doesn't take a minute for all 4 or 5 of us to shoot. In additon, not one of us would hesitate to shoot traditional equipment and we'd have just as much fun, shooting either. Then again, we're not really target shooters, we're hunters and our practice is dedicated to shooting how we likely would, if we were hunting. The equipment we use is irrelevant, and our actions are not dictated by what we shoot. |

Compound bow hunter one who walks up guesses the yardage draws his arrow back and lets if fly! Hoping that you at least get a 8 and then maybe cut the line for a 10. Stealthcat what you stated was a Target shooter playing on a hunting course! I have to agree with you they are a pain but I half to believe there having some kind of fun being so anal! :) excuss me I mean shoot with perfection!!! ![]() |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Stealthy, believe me when I say this, us gear heads do not like shooting with those guys anymore than you do. Quite frankly, I will not voluntarily shoot with anyone that takes longer than 30 seconds to shoot.
I am sick and tired of the mentallity coming from both sides of the aisle. I have been to trad shoots (Elberton and Alabama) where I was talked down to because I prefer to shoot a compound, a big reason why I do not care if I ever attend another "trad" archery festival again in my life. I have had trad archers refuse to let me shoot with them in local shoots because I have "training wheels." On the other hand, I know compounders with the same mentality in reverse. There is a club president in one of our local clubs that shoots trad, but lately has had a bout with carpal tunnel, so he has been shooting a release with his recurve because he can not physically draw his recurve right now. The local trad club has informed him he is not welcome to shoot until he gets rid of the release. Having said that, there are only a few wheelies that will let him shoot with him at the local club shoots. Frankly, he and I have a great time when we shoot together, sometimes to the point of aggrevating other shooters because we are "too loud." Bobby and I have a great time because we view each other as archery brethren regardless of our choice of gear. I would rather be known as an archer, regardless if I have my Chekmate Firebird or Hoyt Ultratec in my hand. |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
Oh yeah, on a side note, the way I handle the shooters that toake that long is simple. I enforce the rules. Our local clubs are 2 minutes for the first shooter, one minute for every shooter after that. Take too long with me in the group and you will get 1 warning, as per the rules, after that it is x's for taking too long.

RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
My question is why do we have to poke fun at each other in what way we shoot. Want to really get them going? Ask them who their favorite Nascar driver is and why? LOL I personally don't see anything special about it. Drive fast, turn left. Big deal. The highway patrol does that all the time around here. |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
I shoot both because their both a blast! I switched to compounds because I was fascinated with the new technology back then. I must admit when I first started shooting compounds I was extremely intimidated by the wheels and cables. With every shot I expected something to blow up in my face. It was probably a good year before I was relaxed enough to start shooting good.
I also noticed the same with my eldest son. I started him with a recurve and he loved it. I purchased a compound for him and he's also intimidated by it and likes the recurve much better. The reason I'm mentioning this is because I feel if I would have started him off with a compound I'm afraid he would have decided that archery just wasn't for him and showed no interest in trying anything else. Keep that in mind when trying to bring a kid into archery! Around here we have two classes (with 3 steaks) for our 3d tourneys. The compounds hunters class and trad class shoot together and we have a great time. The open class shoot their rounds seperate from hunters class and it works great for everyone! |
RE: Why a Recurve or Compound?
I posted this because I was curious to see why we did what we did me I like to shoot both styles and I even have one of my compounds set up for trad shooting. I have a blast doing both I pay more attention to a person skill level then what he shoots. Archery is fun for every one who give it a try!
