Wounded animals
How many animals have you shot with a bow? How many have you wounded? Wounded= Anything that was not a lung or heart shot and anything that need a second arrow (Use your judgement you know when you wounded one) BE HONEST.
I have killed about 100 animals, and wounded two. The first animal i shot, i wounded in the shoulder, found it the next day. The second animal i wounded was a doe at 30 yards, I Had hit my sight hard on the ground on my way to my stand and my sight shifted low. Luckily i hit in no man's land and the doe survived. DON'T MAKE THIS A SLANDER FEST. |
RE: Wounded animals
Wounded= Anything that could not be found within 1 hour once tracking started, and further then 100 yards from the shot |
RE: Wounded animals
In my 19 years of life (bowhunting since I was 12), I have taken 15 and wounded 0. I've missed once, and I've had a few that took 5 hours in the day, and waited overnight on others to find. But these were good shots, they just chose to make their death run in the thickest clearcut east of the mississippi. ;)

Killed about 25 wounded 2 but one survived and the otherfound later.

RE: Wounded animals
O.K then :D
4 out of close to 30 or so 3 of them where over 10 yrs ago when my judgment was not so good;) But I thinks this will be shut down on us;) |
RE: Wounded animals
I have killed about 40 animals with a bow. I have wounded one, the first deer I ever shot at. I was nervous and pulled the shot. Found it the next day but only after the buzzards did first.
|
RE: Wounded animals
My judgement on determining a wounded deer is to disregard the one you've proposed.
24 deer shot with an arrrow, 24 deer found dead, although the 1st one I shot was found by smell the next day, and I was let down by an experienced hunter in my attempts to find it in time. |

RE: Wounded animals
Hunting 17 years 3 wounded but pretty sure all survived, 2 with very little experience and a bow that didnt fit me at all. The other was this last fall, shot quartering away with and expandible. The arrow glanced and went in between the front leg and chest cavity. The buck was seen over a week later with a pretty good limp.
|
RE: Wounded animals
Yes, I have wounded a few in my 20 yrs. I'm pretty sure that if I could remember the count, I could count them on one hand. I can say some survived and the ones that didn't never went to waste. The racoons, foxes and buzzards are thanking me everyday for eating good.

RE: Wounded animals
I’m 41 and I started hunting when I was 12. On my second day hunting, that evening I shot my first deer. It was a doe running at forty yards, running away from my stand. I shot her in the rear and missed her butt ho by about ¼ of an inch. The arrow went all the way through to her chest taking out her lungs and heart. She ran 20 yards.
I have killed at least 87 deer maybe more. I have only wounded two. The first one I was about 14 years old and I shot a buck through some brush, it was getting late and I mistaken it’s rump for it’s shoulder. But I hit the main artery running down the back leg and it ran about 60 yards. The second one was a doe and I lost her, that was about 6 years ago. ![]() |

RE: Wounded animals
I've taken 9 shots and wouded two in 8 seasons. One was a shoulder shot on a small buck and the other was a mystery hit on a doe, it looked good but could never find her.
|
RE: Wounded animals
Never counted but I'd guess around 80 to 100 but only had two wounded animal get away. Actually she didn't get away the woumd was an artery hit and she didn't last long but we were in a clearcut area of Washington State's Central Cascades and though we searched for hours we were never able to find her. The second jumped my string and I hit her in the left rear leg and she ran off with my arrow in her hip. We tracked her for more than a mile or more and lost her in in thick reeds of a river break and never recovered the arrow. This one was my greatest disappointment and we always figured she survived.
If not pressed, any deer or elk so wounded will most of the time pull the arrow out themselves and will generally survive. |
RE: Wounded animals
I don't know exactly how many I've shot, but it's lots. They were all wounded before they died. Time of death has varied between 5 seconds and 5 hours. All of them eventually expired from natural causes.
|
RE: Wounded animals
I stopped counting how many I shot some time ago but I would estimate around 20-25 animals total with approx. 3-4 "wounded" ones by your definition.

What do some of the other states out there do? How do we get a change? |
RE: Wounded animals
My father inlaw ownes the land I hunt on but it's only about 80 acres, only my brother inlaw slug hunts it, he hasnt shot a deer for years. But its all the other jokers around us shooting the heck out of everything. Don't get me wrong the land I'm on is good and getting better every year. But I'm scared every year that the deer I'm trying to get to grow up will wander off during rut and get wasted buy a gun!

RE: Wounded animals
I've been hunting for 30yrs + and I can't remember ever wounding any deer or other animal's .I'm not saying I'm perfect ,but I did and do have a lot of respect for my quarry and if I have any doubt's of my shot placement then I don't shoot .I've taken 30 or so deer and never lost a one . My father instilled solid moral's and hunting ethic's on me and I never forgot ,I have missed a few but I'm sure I would know if I hit them .

RE: Wounded animals
ORIGINAL: Bird Hunt Dog Someone should post this on a gun sight and see what kind of results you get! In this area I have very little respect for the gun hunters. They use shot gun slugs, most hunt with 5 to 16 guys and shoot anything that moves. I've heard some say more than once that if the deer didnt drop on the spot they must not of hit it, and don't even bother to look for blood. I wish MN, would do something about this kind of hunting, abolish party hunting or something! Our bucks are lucky to live to be 2 years old. What do some of the other states out there do? How do we get a change? Not all gun hunters here are like this, but I think the majority are! Well, Mr. Bird Hunt Dog, you have just got my goat! I hunt with BOW, RIFLE, PISTOL and SHOTGUN. And I DO NOT have any respect for people like you that call them selves sportsman, hunters are what ever you may call your self. First there is a long tradition of hunting in a party. The American Indians use to hunt in large party’s, they use to chase down buffalo on horse back in big party’s with bow’s and then with guns after they had acquired them. Second, our sport has enough problems with the anti hunters, animal rights activist, green peace and the like. We do not need people in our sport fighting amongst themselves, adding fuel the there fire. So I would like to see this forum ban anyone that talks bad about our sport in any way. Now to give you a little background and let you know were I’m coming from. I’m 41 and started shooting guns when I was about 5 years old. I started hunting with a gun shortly there after. And I started shooting a recurve bow at about 9, I then started shooting a compound bow at 11. At age 12 I started deer hunting and shot my first deer with a bow on my second day out. I’m a Law enforcement officer in a large metro government and I was a Game Warden for 9 years. P.S. I would like to point out that most the people that I have met are ethical hunters no matter what they use to hunt with. With a few exceptions in every type of hunting method. ![]() |
RE: Wounded animals
I'm sorry if I offended you that wasn't my intension. I just want to know what other states do for deer management? I was pointing out things that happen here were I live,I'mnot saying all gun hunters I'm saying some I've met here witch is a small minority.
I've slug hunted, never will again, Iwould like to try rifle someday. I'm not anti hunting nothing, but I would like to see some better deer management here! It is mostly farmland with groves here and there when you push it with 10 guys the deer dont have a chance! I think in South Dakota you enter a lottery for a buck tag, instead of here were you enter for a doe lottery and can shoot a buck either way! I read through the message you replied on, I'm sorry sometimes things just dont come accross like you wanted them through the internet! |
RE: Wounded animals
I would like to see some better deer management here! It is mostly farmland with groves here and there when you push it with 10 guys the deer dont have a chance! IF YOU HAD 20 PEOPLE IN THAT DRIVE YOU'D BE LUCKY TO GET MAYBE 5 DEER COME OUT INTO SHOOTING RANGE, AND NOT ONE OF THEM WOULD BE A MATURE BUCK. MATURE BUCKS DON'T MAKE VERY MANY MISTAKES THAT'S WHY THEY'RE MATURE BUCKS. THAT WOULD PROBABLY BE WHY YOU SEEM TO THINK THAT THE BUCKS IN YOUR AREA DON'T LIVE PAST 2 YEARS, IT'S BECAUSE THE MATURE BUCKS ARE STILL LIVING AND THEY KNOW HOW TO GET AROUND DRIVES AND SUCH. I GUARANTEE THERE IS PLENTY OF MATURE BUCKS IN YOUR AREA, MAYBE NOT A GOOD BUCK TO DOE RATIO. BUT I WILL GUARANTEE YOU THAT THERE IS MATURE BUCKS IN YOUR AREA THEY ARE JUST NOT GETTING HARVESTED. |
RE: Wounded animals
IMO I would not consider a Whitetail Deer that goes 100+ yards wounded....
Last season my bud had a clean 1 lung + Hart shot. The deer went 160 yards and fell over, dead as a doornail. I hit one two years ago on a hillside and he ran for 225 yards at a dead downhill run. I watched him step out into the field at the bottom and walk another 30 yards or so, he dropped within 40 yards of my 4 wheeler! :D How many have I really wounded? just 1 shoulder shot. never recoverd him. The bow string hit my sleeve and the shot just went bad. Good Hunting |
RE: Wounded animals
I've been hunting for 12 years and have only seen one buck while hunting that might have made Pope & Young. Most people here are out to fill a their tag including bow hunters. Up untill the last couple of years I was also guilty of shooting smaller bucks just to get a deer. Maybe everything here is just fine, but I hear of other States with mature bucks and just deer all over!
Your right their around I probubly just need to learn more! I have good land that isn't hunted to much I guess I just have to do some more homework. |
RE: Wounded animals
i've been bowhunting for only 2 years now. i have been fortunate eneough to take 3 deer, all of which were retreived within 30 yards. no misses or wounded to date.

RE: Wounded animals
YEAH I'D BE WILLING TO SAY THAT THE BUCK TO DOE RATIO IN YOUR AREA IS OUT OF WACK. HOW MANY DOES ARE YOU SEEING IN RELATION TO HOW MANY BUCKS? EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT SEEING THAT MANY MATURE BUCKS DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE NOT THERE.
I HARVESTED MY BUCK THIS YEAR WITH A MUZZLELOADER. I HUNTED HARD ALL SEASON AND PASSED ON A FEW SMALLER BUCKS. I FINALLY DECIDED TO TAKE A 120 CLASS 9 POINTER. I KNOW THAT IN MY AREA THERE IS MATURE BUCKS CAUSE EVERY YEAR THERE IS SIGHTINGS OF THEM, BUT VERY RARELY DO YOU EVER HEAR OF ANY ONE HARVESTING ONE OF THEM. I HUNT IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY NEAR THE OHIO RIVER. THIS SPOT IS A DREAM FOR TROPHY WHITETAILS, BUT YOU JUST DON'T SEE A LOT OF MATURE BUCKS, THEY'RE THERE YOU JUST DON'T SEE EM. YOU CAN ALSO SEE A GREAT IMPROVEMENT IN YOUR DEER HERD EVEN ON SMALL TRACTS OF LAND IF QDM IS USED AND USED WELL. FOR INSTANCE IF YOU HUNT A 100 ACRE TRACT OF LAND AND YOU ARE USING QDM PRINCIPLES SUCH AS LETTING THE LITTLE ONES WALK AND GROWING FOOD PLOTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. EVEN IF THE NEIGHBORING HUNTERS ARE SHOOTING EVERYTHING THAT MOVES YOU WILL STILL SEE MORE QUALITY DEER ON YOUR PROPERTY BECAUSE THE DEER KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GETTING BETTER TAKEN CARE OF. ;) |
RE: Wounded animals
I'm on about 80 acres, small river through the middle RIM & CREP on both sides (Native grasses a newly planted trees). So the hunting I think will get better every year. About 3 miles down the river is a deer haven. well managed and alot of acres 300? Do you think that helps or hurts me?
I've been puting deer mineral blocks out the last couple of years and have been trying to convince my father inlaw to put some deer mix in for a food plot instead of corn. We've got corn everywere here. He's more interested in the Pheasants, but there thicker than fleas on a dogs back which is awsome.Turkeys moved in the last couple years and I got a chance to hunt them this year, no luck shooting one with the bow, I had them close enough but just couldnt take a shot. Alot of fun!! Thanks for you advice!!!!!! |
RE: Wounded animals
WELL I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THERE SHOULD BE PLENTY OF MATURE BUCKS IN YOUR AREA. THE PROPERTY 3 MILES FROM YOU CAN ONLY HELP CAUSE DURING THE RUT A MATURE BUCK HAS BEEN KNOWN TO TRAVEL UP TO LIKE 15 MILES OR SOMETHING. I'D SAY JUST START LOOKING FOR SOME BUCK SIGN NOW. LOOK FOR OLD RUBS NEXT TO NEW RUBS. GENERALLY MATURE BUCKS WILL USE THE SAME CORE AREA YEAR AFTER YEAR UNLESS SOMETHING FORCES THEM TO CHANGE.
LAST YEAR I HUNTED A CORE AREA WITH ABOUT 30 RUBS AND ABOUT 15 SCRAPES ON THE OUTER EDGE. THIS AREA WAS DEEP IN A THICKET WITH A LOT OF CEDAR TREES BUT NOT A LOT OF PLACES TO SET UP A STAND. THERE WAS 3 DIFFERENT RUBS AROUND MOST OF THE NEW RUBS. IT LOOKED AS THOUGH THERE WERE RUBS FROM THE PREVIOUS COUPLE OF YEARS ALL AROUND THE NEW ONES. ON ONE PARTICULAR DAY DURING THE RIFLE HUNT IT WAS GETTING TOWARDS MIDDAY SO I GOT DOWN FROM MY STAND AND DECIDED TO TAKE A LITTLE WALK AND DO SOME STALKING. I WALKED UP THE HILL DEEP INTO THE CORE AREA. THE WIND WAS ABOUT 10MPH IN MY FACE SO I KNEW I WAS GOOD. AS I CRESTED THE SMALL HILL I SAW HIM JUST ON THE EDGE OF THE HILL GETTING READY TO JUMP DOWN INTO THE THICKET. HE WAS LOOKING RIGHT AT ME FOR JUST A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE HE VANISHED. HE WAS ROUGHLY A 160 CLASS BUCK AND WHEN I REALIZED THAT I WASN'T GOING TO GET A SHOT I STARTED LOOKING AROUND THE TOP OF THAT SMALL HILL AND RIGHT NEXT TO A SCRAPE WAS A BIG LONE BED WITH FRESH DROPPINGS IN IT. FROM WHAT I GATHER HE HAD BEEN BEDDED DOWN THERE UNTIL HE HEARD ME COMING UP THE HILL BUT HE COULDN'T SMELL ME SO HE WAITED TILL HE SAW ME BEFORE GETTING OUT OF THERE. BUT IT LOOKED AS THOUGH HE HAD BEEN USING THE SAME CORE AREA FOR SEVERAL YEARS. MAYBE THIS YEAR I WILL HAVE TO AMBUSH HIM. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO TAKE HIM WITH A BOW. |
RE: Wounded animals
There is a lot that has to be considered in deer hunting especially bow hunting. Like sent control, if you don’t have good sent control you will never see that big buck in the area. But I guess the biggest factor is stand placement. If you are not hunting were the bucks sleep, eat are in there travel area you will not see them unless they are ran to you and you are very lucky.
Last year I got a nice eight-point buck on some property that I have been hunting for several years and this was the first time I had seen him. We knew he was around from the sign but no one had seen him until that day. We had seen other bucks and does but not him. Year before last I shot a 150-class 12-point buck on the same property. This buck was seen once are twice every year for about three years before I shoot him. This buck was very smart; one of my stands was over several rubs that he had made. I never seen him from this stand but on several days when I would return to my stand I would find a new rub close to my tree. So you see he was there but most of his movement was at night. Although I did jump him out of a noontime bed about 40 yards from my tree one day as I was walking back to my stand. But my determination paid off Nov. 2002. ![]() |

I have only been around the twin cities but have seen good places to scout. I never had the chance to do any scouting but if I get a chance I know where I would go. The places I hunt hold 130 - 140 class every day. I see 160 at least 1 to 3 times a year. Next time you scout look in the neighborhoods. You still need to do your home work but in time you can build better hunting grounds. |
