Bow sights
I am just getting back into bowhunting after 20+ years. Man, has the equipment changed. After trying 8-10 different bows I settled on a new Mathews LX. Now my challange is outfitting my bow.
The new sight options are unbelievable. I can not decide whether to go with the traditional horizontal pin position or a vertical pin alignment. It seems that a vertical arrangement would make centering in the circular sight window a little more like using a peep on a rifle. What to the experts think? My bow will be set up for hunting deer here in Michigan. (I like the Copper John and the Extreme sights but they do not offer the vertical arrangement). |
RE: Bow sights
Chase you may want to go with an adjustable sight like the HHA or Sight Master. I've been using them for 10-11 years now and love them.

RE: Bow sights
For hunting, the v-pins are super. If you are going to be doing much target or 3D, I'd stick with horizontal. You'll become accustomed to your new arrangement either way in a short time.
Check out the nopeep when you get the chance. I won't have a hunting bow without one. -Chief |
RE: Bow sights
Glad to hear you are back and welcome aboard. I was out for about 8 years myself. My son and daughter couldn't bow hunt with me so I took up waterfowl until they got older. They just loved to go with and ducks and geese were easier. By about 11 my son wanted to try bow. Now we are all ex-waterfowlers.
Anyway, about your question. I tried the trophy ridge vertical last year and I love it. You really do get a better field of view. It's kind of like getting that first 4 wheel drive. You never want to go back to 2 wheel. Not sure about any other verticals as I only tried this one. Keep checking this site as there is a lot of great information out here about all the new toys. The people are pretty friendly too.;) |
RE: Bow sights
one thing is make sure you have a good fiber optic, get some thing that you like and feel right to you. there is a lot of very good sight out there.Archers Choice sight are good just for one of them. you might want a bigger fiber optic or a smaller one, choces choces choces.:D, Nice to have another Michigan man in here.

RE: Bow sights
I think the two choices you offered are excellent. Both have a durable, well thought design. Ideal for bowhunting. I prefer the horizontal pins myself but do admit that vertical pins offer you more of a sight picture.

RE: Bow sights
Chief,
What is a "nopeep"? Thanks for all of the advice, so far. One thing I have noticed is that bowhunters seem to be much more friendly than do some of the other groups if hunters. Thanks again. |
RE: Bow sights
Chase,
A "No-Peep" is an alternative to using a string mounted peep sight. It's a product of Timberline Archery. It mounts just behind your sight pins on a separate bracket and the unit consists of a lens with an internal fiber optic There is a dot /circle arrangement within the lens. You set the "No-Peep" to your own specific draw style/anchor. When you have the dot exactly lined up within the circle you know that you are at your repeated anchor point. It is actually quite precise and accurate.....I used one for a few years, but when I got into 3D shooting a little more competitively I wanted both of my bows (hunting and 3D) to have the same sighting style. I thought a small peep was more accurate oevrall so both bows got string style peeps. I am beginning to rethink the peep sight on my hunting bow. I remembered why I liked the No_peep so much.......LOW LIGHT. Since you don't have to force your eye into a small peep opening it is MUCH easier to shoot in low light. I liked it, it's a bit of a pain in the butt to set-up but once it is set up it's accurate. Plus you won't be losing the speed that you would with a string style peep sight. I just MIGHT be going back to one. |
RE: Bow sights
Thanks Matt.
Here is what it looks like setup the way I prefer it for me. ![]() There are usually some choices of where to position it. Front or back of the riser and above or below the sight. I describe it as being similar to a bubble balance (360 degrees). If your predetermined alignment is off at all, the dot and circle will not center correctly; and it IS precise and WILL show grip torque as well. Check it out. http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomfr...2Fdefault1.asp |
RE: Bow sights
Matt,
Just out curiousity, which side of the string are you looking past when using the No-peep?...and how much does this then change the typical sight alignment? |
