Depends on how long you've been hunting I'd say. My son will be 14 next month and I would drop him off for an hunt if I couldn't go. NYS law say's I can't do that however.

I don't think that you can actually put an age limit on it but more of what your skill level is. I have seen some kids that are very good woodsman and then again I have seen some grown adults that have no need to be in the woods. You need to ask yourself if you can field dress an animal and then get it out of the woods in time? What about emergency situations that may arise? This is where skill comes in. Good Luck, Bobby ;)

Here in Washington it's 16, which I think is pretty decent considering most people get their Driver's Licenses this year too.

Right now I'm thinking on 12. I will tell you how close I come when I let my boy/girl go on there own. I think by then I should know when they are ready to take on the challenge. I have been preping them with the basic use of a fire arm since 4 at the youngest.

I started when I was 13, but that was a differnt time and a differnt place. I didn't have my father around to take me, so I would get off the school bus grab my shotgun and go hunting. I don't really know at what age I will turn my boy loose. It really depends on him, how mature he is as well as how responsable he becomes. I will say that while shooting his BB gun yesterday I "cocked it" for him and when I handed it back he informed me that I forgot to put the safety on[:-] OOPS! That shows me he is paying attention and is understanding the importance of safety. Not bad for being only 7.

I started hunting alone when I was 16. I could have earlier but it isn't legal in Maine. 16 is a godd age;)

in wyoming we could hunt small game and birds at twelve then big game at 14. This worked out pretty well. Also in accordance with skill level, and overall understanding of mother nature, I think there is a certain maturity level that must be present. I know that there are several hunters that are 25 and still probably not mature enough to actually be hunting. but by the same token, I've hunted with 12 year olds that were safe and extremely knowledgeable. So I guess 14 seems to be pretty good.

Well i had my mother dropping me off on public land at the age of 13 to go rabbit hunting.
But i did attend cub scouts,and boy scouts ,was taught proper gun safety,and first aid.
The laws in my state have changed sence then. Indiana now has hunting education courses that have to be passed in order to get a youth hunting liciense.But is better to have an adult close by in case of an emergience,or atleast a friend some where in the woods close by with a cell phone.

I never had anyone take me hunting. I tought myself and went when I wanted. At 14 I hunted by myself with a High powered rifle. But...like he said, different times 20 years ago.

I think in today's world...probably around 16 would be a good avg age, based on the teens I know. It really would depend on the individual.

I think it all depends on the kid. I was mature metally for my age, but small physically as a kid. Our laws state you had to be accompanied my an adult until 16. My Dad felt I was mature enough to be "semi" on my own at 12. We were in sight, but all the decisions were mine to make.

Now my brother on the other hand, my dad was stuck to his side like glue, and probably still would be if my brother still hunted and he's 28;):D

I started hunting on my own at 12. My Dad was usually only a couple hundred yards away and he would always wait for me to climb the tree and be there when I climbed down. After that season, I was completely on my own.

I was probably 12 when I started deer hunting on my own. My skill level was different than all the other 12 years olds that I knew though. I had been going with my father religously since I was very young and my father had seen me exhibit good judgement on several occaisions so there was no doubt that I could handle myself and make competent decisions. Then again I was getting triples on a covey rise by the time I was 12 and we were hunting together 40-50 days a year and I was hanging right there with the adults. My dad was always close buy until I was 14 when I started bowhunting. Then he would take me and drop me off and come back and get me. By that time I was an accompolished duck hunter, squirrel hunter, quail hunter, dove hunter, and rabbitt hunter. I consistenly killed limits of small game if the shots presented themselves and I killed by first limit of teal 6 years earlier (anyone that has shot teal can attest to the difficulty of this task). At 14 I already had 7 duck bands a couple of long beards and enough rabitts , squirrels, dove, and quail to fill up the back end of a truck. It all depends on the experience level and majurity of the child involved.

My dad was taking me up in the tree hunting with him when I was 5 years old. On a bear hunt in Ontario no less. :D So by the time I was of legal age, 12, to hunt with a bow I was more than ready. Although at first he was never very far away, and always watched me climb into my tree, and then climb out of it later. The first few times he even climbed into the tree with me to make sure I had my safety belt fastened properly.

Like most other people said - it depends on the person. There are people who are 30 years old who still shouldn't be hunting on their own, if at all.

I started when I was 12 but was never too far away from home or dad.... 16 is when I started really venturing away due to the fact I could drive then.

My daughters only 3, legal hunting age her in MN, is 12.
I live 1/2 a mile from my dear stand, if she's comfortable going by herself her second season that would be fine by me!

i started out alone at 16 because of Pa's laws. But it all depends on your local regs and the individual person.

I would think it depends on a lot of factors. The most important would be the kid him/herself. I also think the game and weapon would be important. Of course the laws most often tell you but not always. New York was 14 when I was growing up or something like that. At age 8, I started hunting woodchucks and lesser forest critters with a 22. I started hunting ruffed grouse at about age 10 with a 20 guage. I wasn't allowed to hunt deer until I was 14. I didn't really learn how to hunt deer until I was about 30. (Slow learner.) [&:] IT really depends on the kid, his maturity, safety practices, and how much he's been out with dad or another adult. Excluding the exceptional kids I'd say in all honesty that anything before age 14 is probably shaky. There are just too many unsafe, over eager, rushed kids out there in the woods. I know there are exceptions, but they're rare. Lens kid is safer and more woods savy than a lot of adults I've been around. That comes from lots of time, training, schooling and practice with dad. I have no idea how many times Len has made him sit through a hunter safety class or a bowhunter education class. He's grown up in an Archery shop. He's an exception. I teach hunter safety classes. I see too many kids that dad is rushing. They just don't have the maturity or the safety skills yet.
