RE: Challenge for Elitist Bowhunters

Are you suppose to count???? I don't care when the gun hunters hunt as long as they give me some quiet time first. After I get a couple they can do what they want. It really doesn't effect me. Sure it makes the deer a little more edgy etc... but it keeps you on your toes. My deer get hunted 11 months this year. You think they're tame. Not on your life. The deer right now are as spooky as they are on the second day of gun season in PA. BIll Winke talks a good line but I doubt he pops many does in a year unless it's on his own farm. He's looking for story and bragging material for his next video or book.... that's all. I'm not a QDM believer either when someone tells me what I can and can't shoot. The laws do that... the rest are opinions. If the mood strikes.... so do I.

I didn't realize gun hunters couldn't harvest a buck if their season wasn't during the rut?[&:] Guess I'd better dig up the bones of all the bucks I've shot after the rut over the years and try my hand at reincarnation.

If you want to bowhunt during the rut when there's no gun hunting, hunt the states that open the monday after thanksgiving, for example the state I now live in, Mass. It's taken me a few seasons to get used to it, but overall it's not too bad, we get all the rut action during most of the month of November, then gun opens after.

IMO, the guys that can make a living from deer hunting whether it be writing books, for magazines, video, etc. have gotten there because they've worked for it. If I could ever achieve what they have, all you guys could bash me all you want on these boards 'cause I wouldn't care.....cause you're doing something everyone dreams about!:)

RE: Challenge for Elitist Bowhunters

MN has their gun season right at the very begining through most of the rut, right around Nov 4 start, and depending on your zone ending about thanksgiving.
I was always dreaded puting my bow away that first weekend in november and seeing flocks of orange driving the small woodlots of NW MN.
I see what Dirt 2 is trying to say, but it doesn't carry water. If winkey lets all the young bucks pass him by and happens to harvest a mature buck then he is following his own QDM guidelines regardless of howmany states he hunts. Furthermore he is increasing the odds of a gun hunter getting a buck, and for the future more and possibly larger bucks.

This is exactly why I will not patronize any of these guys. I do not buy their videos, gear with their endorsments on it or other stuff like that. I have a ton of diffuculty respecting some of these guys who go to a ranch where the deer is already scouted out and he is placed into a stand for the video. Where is the hunt? I'm not saying they are all like this, but the vast majority of them are very well setup and pre-canned for TV before that shot is even made. But then again, who the hell would want to watch a guy sit in the woods all day motionless?

I would just like to see more of these guys get off private, fenced or pre-canned land hunts and hunt public ground or something more fair chase.

Dirt2
I think you made a great point. People like Bill Winke can just sit & spin in my book. I live in a state that does have a rifle season in the rut. We are over populated with deer in most areas. I love hunting deer in the rut with a rifle. Comments like Bill Winke made tick me off.
Do you have a link to this article? I would love to read it & then sent him a email.

I love hearing them ask, " did he do like I told you he would?"
A lot of those guy's have a lot of money tied up in overhead, So they pretty much have these outfitters spotting for them long before they show up.But as long as their opinion's are not worth more than mine, then that's just their opinion. It probably will never affect my hunting.
