My Form?

Always looking for helpful hints.

Hows my form?

RE: My Form?

Draw length is too long, get the tip of that finger off the release. You want to curl your finger around that trigger. It really does look like you're stretching out to get to the wall. Left arm appears locked and straight. At the very least you have too much palm into the grip. Get the bow resting on the pad of the thumb and it's harder to induce torgue from any position. It also looks like you have the makings for a death grip on that bow at the shot. Relax that bow hand and loosen up the fingers a little. It's hard to say from the pictures really, but it looks like your release hand elbow is a little high, probably a product of a too long draw length.

NOW TELL me you just won the Vegas Shoot.:eek:

About the Grip: Normally I don't grip the bow like this. With the digital camera I have I have 5 seconds after I click to step back, draw, align the peep with the pin, and relax. Usually the bow always rests in the crotch of my hand.

I agree with davidmil draw length is to long. Also the tip of your trigger finger should be almost pointing down, at least it works best for me that way. The trigger should be closer to the first joint. It will be easier to squeeze the trigger like that. Try it you'll like it.

RE: My Form?

The big thing I see:

Is that your release hand is above your release elbow. You want to be able to draw a straight line from your elbow - through your wrist - through your nock - then into the throat of the grip. The position you have now need much more muscle to hold draw. your line is pointing into the top limb. This is usually caused by a long draw.

I see no problem with a straight arm - many Top shooters shoot this style.

I would also say your trigger finger needs to be much deeper into the trigger - first knuckle at min.

But then what do I know:)

I agree with davidmill allso , try a bow thats an inch shorter on draw , or adjust the one you have and see how it shoots for you .

Do you hit what you are aiming at on a consistent basis?

It would help if you could get someone to snap a photo of you at full draw (so you're not racing the camera) and fully get into your actual shooting form. Also, aim at a spot on the wall that's at eye level. Your shoulders and everything are out of whack in that photo.

I agree with the suggestions made above. Plus, the inside bend of the elbow should be perpendicular to the floor, not parallel.

washington hunter, you are a brave man to ask this question. I applaud you for that. There is a lot of good advice here. Don't get discouraged at all.

I don't think I have anything more then what other people have offered.

I'd try a 1/2" -1" shorter :)

WHO????? US????? Nah, we don't give advice..... just criticism.[8D] If he was perfect we'd still find fault with his clothes or something.

Hey, that's right! This entire thread is off topic for the bowhunting forum! Where's the form forum?[8D]

RE: My Form?

Your upper body should form a "T" at full draw, see the photo by Rack Attack, your right fore arm should be parell to your leftarm Your left arm should have a bend to it.
Your realease hand looks a bit far back also .
like Rack Attack said some shooters do ok with straight arms. I'm lucky because I can shoot with a bent arm and still shoot a 30 inch draw length. I feel alot more comfortable with a bent arm. It keeps clothing and skin away from the string. Good luck Jim

One other thing i noticed is your left should is up to high, drope it down into the socket and you will be able to hold alot more steady, I also agree on shortening your draw length atleast a inch and then straiten out your release arm so your rist isnt all cocked.

RE: My Form?

THERE IS SOME GOOD ADVICE HERE. I HEARD SOMEWHERE THAT TO GET YOUR CORRECT DRAW LENGTH, MAKE A FIST WITH YOUR LEFT HAND AND PLACE IT AGAINST A WALL HAVING A SLIGHT BEND IN YOUR LEFT ELBOW. NOW BRING YOUR RIGHT ARM BACK LIKE YOU ARE DRAWING YOUR BOW. HAVE SOMEBODY MEASURE THE DISTANCE FROM THE WALL TO THE RIGHT CORNER OF YOUR MOUTH AND WALLA THERE'S YOUR DRAW LENGTH.

SO FROM YOUR PIC IT LOOKS AS THOUGH YOUR STRING IS ABOUT AN INCH PAST THE CORNER OF YOUR MOUTH. SO I WOULD TRY SHORTENING YOUR DRAW TO 28". GOOD LUCK MAN.

RE: My Form?

That is one way of measuring draw length. I just got back from bernie pellerites shooting school and he tought me the best way to measure it. I might get some crap for this but here we go anyways
strech your arms out and measure your wing span then devide it in half and subtract 7.5''
(if you have abnormaly short or long fingers it will vary a little)
it sounds kinda strangr but trust me it works.

davidmil 03-29-2004 09:36 PM

RE: My Form?

That's not strange at all pup. Len has a wing span chart on the wall behind his bench. He starts there and then tweeks you for physical differences.... but it's usally within 1/2 inch.

Its very hard to tell from that picture, but from looking where the nock of the arrow aligns on your face, the draw might not be that long, however you are very overdrawn by the looks of things, it looks like you are stretching to get the trigger finger to the trigger, if you shorten up the release about 1 inch it might bring everything into alignment a bit.

You are also aiming down so it hard to get a good look at the arm alignments with your shoulders.

Ok, better picture. Still a little rushed, but better than the first.

HEY MAN I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT LENGTH YOUR ARROWS ARE. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR FORM BUT IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THOSE ARROWS COULD USE SOME CUTTING DOWN. JUST A THOUGHT.;)

It looks as though you are at least 1 inch too long on your draw length. I had the same prob when I went to the LX. I was used to shooting long with my 96' Golden Eagle , but after shortening my DL up, it's much more "normal."
