8 1/2 year old buck--need help
I've been tracking this 8 1/2 year old buck. I keep seeing him in a well-wooded ravine between noon and 2 p.m. The rest of the time he is across a blacktop road near a field and an old apple orchard. There's a lot of underbrush and briars on that side of the road. I see him mainly during the rut but it doesn't seem to affect him as much as the other deer. There is also a dominant heavy-rack 10 pointer running the same area; but at different times. I need to figure out which place he is bedding in and which place he's feeding at. Any help or strategies would be greatly appreciated. PS--I'm hunting in north-eastern Ohio.

Without knowing the lay of the land, ect., it will be hard to give advice. There is a reason though, why that buck is as old as he is. I would suggest starting a daily activity journal on him, if you haven't already. This helps greatly on reducing little things you may not think of when going after deer. Even go as far as writing down wind direction, speed, weather patterns before and after fronts, times ect. Good Luck!

If he's lived this long..... let him go. Whack the 10 point.

I just read an article in deer and deer hunter and it said that deer that are really old, like your 8 1/2 year old, are almost immposible to see from your treestand and you rarely see them. When they get over 3 1/2 they loose their curiosity and become very wise creatures. Good luck on trying to bag the oldy!

Just curious, how do you know it's 8 1/2 years old? Seems it would be hard to trace a particular buck back to when it was a fawn or even a year and a half.

Yeah, I'm curious too as to how you know his exact age. As far as how to bag him...with a guy like that, I would say lots of hours in the stand during the rut, hopefully he will slip up with the help of a hot doe. Good luck!

Boy thats a real old buck peak is about 5 1/2 he must have a real gooffie looking rack. I seen one that was 7 1\2 so the DNR said and it looked like a steer about the size of a pop can around the base and about 20 point on the mean beam the longest being about 8 inches. We scored it for P&Y but didn't score much.
