RE: elk hunting
I have never taken a bull elk with my bow (several with rifle and muzzle loader), and hope to go some day with the bow. My point is that last year I was at one of our suppliers through work, and the one guy goes on to tell me the same thing about 50++ yard shots. I AM an avid whitetail bow hunter and know that alot can go wrong after the 40 yard mark. This guy also commented on "how many shots" they had....errrgghh!! SOunded like a few wounded, several missed and only one or two taken. I tried to be somewhat politically correct due to the work environment and location of discussion, but I made it clear that he seriously needs to re-think his (their) range selection and think about the animal :-(

RE: elk hunting
Hi, New here, I do love elk hunting and go nearly every year.
I do like to practice long shooting in preparation for hunting. I feel that if I'm confidant at all ranges throught the bows ability I will be more calm and relaxed. What is long for you "is what it is" I find that practicing intermediate yardages are most benificial. (17, 23, 36, 53, unknown) Ex. Set up some targets in the woods or go to a wooded range. walk along though the brush and when you see the target get set and shoot. judge the distance yourself and change it up! Shoot from your knees, around trees, through slots in the brush, etc. THAT type of shooting will help you make quality shots. Not just practicing to 75yards. (keep it safe though!) If you want to bowhunt elk- get in shape, get in shape, get in shape, get in shape. I would rather be in great shape and only shoot 30 yards than be out of shape and shoot 200 yards! Good Luck |
RE: elk hunting
my comfort zone is 30 yards or less,, everything i have killed has been under 20 yards. i know of people that take long shots ,, but i don't feel comfortable doing it. its pretty much what ever you feel safe to shoot out to. most of the people i hunt with usually kill theirs under 15 yards.

RE: elk hunting
I Agree 100%. Get in shape physically as well as mentaly. When you get the shot that's comfortable take it. If you are asking yourself "Can I make this shot?" let off and wait for the one that is right. You will be richly rewarded. If you make the good shot and the game is down there is no preparation for a long drag back to camp. Game Cart?

RE: elk hunting
I can see taking a shot at 50 yards, sometimes that's the only shot you have.
Personally I have my Pins set at 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards. I am comfortable taking shots out to 50 yards on any animal when given the right shot. Anything past 50 I would pass, but that is just a personal preferance. |
