RE: LET'S go HUNTING!!!

Obviously, Maryland has a serious problem. However, the deer overpopulation problem is never going to be solved with bows and extended bow seasons. If the deer overpopulation is truly a serious problem, and a bow shooter chooses to engage in killing deer primarily to reduce the deer numbers, although the impact will hardly measurable if the deer numbers are great, it is legal and it is the person's personal choice.

One problem I have with the whole scene, is the mistaken belief that will be conveyed to the non/anti-hunters by any notoriety that bows and arrows are capable to drastically reduce and control [/i]any[/i] wild animal population.

For years, bowhunters have held the reputation that bows are not the same as firearms (still easier to gain access to land with a bow than with a firearm), and that bowhunting still leaves the survival advantage in the animal's favor. The opposition could (now) reasonably argue that our (bowhunters) reputation and the reputation of the bow are erroneous. If not erroneous, why would a bow be the chosen tool and bowhunting be the chosen method to solve a serious overpopulation problem?

Good luck in your hunt. Wish I was still in the woods.

Because it's the safest, least expensive alternative to the community, and it's leagues ahead of doing nothing????????????

In my opinion, your argument is like saying there is no point in taking a pain killer because it won't fix your broken arm. No, it won't fix it, but it will certainly help control some of the symptoms. Very few problems can be fixed with one easy application. So does that mean that you don't even try to fix them? In my opinion, they are using the tool of bowhunting to help curtail the population. I am sure they also felt like this option would draw less attention from anti-hunters due to the sheer stealth of the operation.

PS Good luck to you and Len!

Silent:

The emphasis of my post was on notoriety, and misconceptions by the non-hunting populace. A bowhunter's stealth is worthless against headlines and false belief.

Seems like it would be worth a lot to me. I have never been driving by the woods in my suburb and had someone rattle the car window when they shot a deer with a bow;) A bow shot draws a lot less attention than an 06.That sheer lack of high powered weapon firing coupled with the lack of orange etc. will go a long way toward keeping the headlines from being headlines. People can't criticize what they don't know is happening and the more people that are oblivious to the fact that it is happening, the better off they will be. JMO

Whew! I am happy you clarified that silence of shot is the secret to remaining unknown. I was concerned that the Internet, hunting web sites, threads on the subject, Maryland newspapers and TV, etc, might alert the populace and the anti-hunting people and organizations. In fact, this thread does not exist and I am not reading it…..are you!? :D

I didn't say it would be unknown but it may very well help it to escape those that didn't otherwise know until they heard a rifle crack, in their backyard;) It's just like putting your tailgate up when you have a dead deer in the back. It doesn't change the fact that you killed it, but most people are more tolerant when you don't rub it in their face.;) You think the average non-hunter would rather a bow go off in the woods their children sometimes play in or a high powered rifle? How many more people get killed every year with guns while hunting than with bows? Guns tend to scare people more than bows are therefore more likely to cause more resistence.

C903, see what you went and done, you took a thread and turned it completly around and steered it off the intentional purpose of the thread. If you want to go that route start your own thread on the subject in the political forum or even this forum but don't steer this one astray.

In what way??? This thread doesn't exist. Mdbowhunter is going to delete it for me when I finish typing this. We can use any weapon we want on these permits, we choose bows. We've never had a problem filling all the permits they send us with the bow. We had 20 on this place last year and 10 already this year. Everytime we thin them they build another housing subdivision, bulldoz another woodlot or 10 and drive in a few more. When the whole place is concrete we'll be out of business. ON SECOND THOUGHT.... MDbowhunter... how about deleting this thread. We'll work in secret and keep it to ourselves. I'm really sorry I posted it now.
