How long have you been shooting?
I have been shooting for 2 months. I can get each arrow about 2 inches away from the other. I've heard that some of you guys can get 1 inch groups at 20-30 yards. How long have you been shooting? Do you think I can get to shooting that good. I have a PSE Fire-Flite 33. I know the bow doesn't matter, it's the shooter, but I'm just curious as to how long you guys have shot.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
zak123, sometimes it is the bow, not the brand necessarily, but the setup. It could be out of tune, etc. But, 2 inch groups sounds good to me. I've been shooting for 12 years now, and I can't do much better than that. That is good shooting. When I REALLY practice alot, I can shoot lights out and literally hit anything I aim at out to 40yds, but it takes a hell of alot of practice to do it, and I don't have that kind of time anymore. I will settle for 2 inch groups at 20 and 4-5 inch groups at 30. That is WAY better than most people can truly shoot.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
Find a local 3-D range and shoot all that you, this will allow you to develope distance judging and present you with life like situations.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
Are 6" groups good enough for deer.
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Are 6" groups good enough for deer. Sure a few of those shots might be good ones, but for the consistent taking of game 6" accuracy at any practical range is not good enough. There are also many variables that come into play when hunting that demand more pin-point accuracy......just the adrenaline rush is enough to cause a drop in accuracy. Animals don't stand still for long either.......throw 6" accuracy into an animal that moves even a little bit when you shoot and you can potentially have disaster. Just keep practicing Zak......learn to simply love shooting, watching those arrows fly and keep on doing it. Don't always get dead serious about your practice. Shoot 3D, loose some arrows:D,play shooting games etc and the good groups will come. Shooting with better shooters will also help you become better. I have been shooting pretty seriously for 20 years, and I can remember summer days as a kid where I would spend an entire days at the local gun club that I walked a mile to just shooting and shooting all day long. I couldn't get enough. It'll come Zak, just keep at it. A decent goal for a beginner to shoot for to take into the woods hunting is: 1-2" @ 10 yards 2-3" @ 20 yards don't even worry about those deer out there beyond 30 yards anytime soon, but by all means practice at those longer ranges........for one its just fun seeing those arrows fly! But the long practice will cause you to concentrate harder for good accuracy. |
RE: How long have you been shooting?
ZAK,two inch groups at how far?If your doing it at 15-20 yrds your doing great!.To answer your other question ,6inches is not good!!!,at 40 yrds, maybe. But that is to far to shoot at deer.get them in close [10-20 yrds]2 inch groups= venison.welcome to the sport keep on praticeing.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
6" isn't good enough for deer!!! Good. Guess I will "have" to practice more. YEA!!!!!!!!;) LOL
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
I shoot at 20 yards. When I mean 2"'s away from each other I mean this: Each * represents an arrow: * *
* Those are my groups |
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Shooting since 1955.
Getting good enough to shoot tight groups is important and I do not want to sound like I'm downplaying it. Good groups tell you a lot about how steady and consistent your form is. However, what matters most for a hunter is the FIRST shot, that very first cold shot. If your first shot of the day almost always goes right where you're aiming, then you're good to go. |
RE: How long have you been shooting?
How do you hit the release? I have heard to slowly hit it. When I do that, I get off target because let my sight flow around the target. If I would slowly release, then by the time the arrow shot, I would be way off. How slow should I release? Should it be a smooth pull or a fast jerk?

RE: How long have you been shooting?
I've been shooting for about 4 yrs. Unfortunately I don't have time to practice much this time of year. I can normally shoot 2" groups at 20-25 yards. That is definitely consistent enough to put venison in the freezer. I myself wouldn't feel comfortable taking a shot at a deer if I was shooting 6" groups. For some reason I seem to shoot better when I have a deer in my sights :D I guess it causes me to concentrate more. Practice hard and the results will pay off in the end.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
My pic messed up. Each dot is supposed to be 2" apart. I guess I will have to practice.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
HELLO ZAK123, WELL I AGREE WITH THE OTHERS 6 INCHES IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. AS FOR THAT IT JUST TAKES TIME AND PRACTICE;). I HAVE FOUND THAT IF YOU JERK THE RELEASE YOU WILL NOT GROUP AS GOOD AS YOU SHOULD BE. I TEACH KIDS IN 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS WITH SOME PSE BUCKEYE BOWS. I HAVE A SAYING, WIPE THE KETCHUP OFF YOUR FACE. THIS MEANS FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR SHOT. GIVE IT A TRY AND SEE IF IT HELPS. IF YOUR SIGHT FLOW AROUND YOUR TARGET, I WOULD SAY REDUCE THE POUNDAGE ON YOUR BOW, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE PULLING TO MUCH FOR RIGHT NOW. I TRY TO TEACH THE KIDS FORM THIS IS THE KEY TO SHOOTING A BOW. PLEASE DONT GET ME WRONG I`M NOT SAYING YOU ARE A KID I`M JUST TRYING TO TELL YOU SOME POINTERS. I`M NO PRO JUST AN AVERAGE GUY TRYING TO HELP OUT. AND I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING FOR 22 YEARS AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYTIME I SHOOT. TAKE CARE I HOPE THIS HELPS.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
I can pull my bow back fine. I was told by a pro to let it flow. That's why I'm confused.
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Been using a bow since 1961.
I regularly shoot 6" groups @ 90 meters;) But at hunting distances I want my arrows touching each other. As the others have said it all takes practice and not just flinging arrow practice but good quality practice where you work on your form and consistancy. But always remember to have fun while your doing it. |

RE: How long have you been shooting?
1958. Did not become "techy" until I started shooting wheel bows. Wasn't much to get overly techy with a stick bow. :)

RE: How long have you been shooting?
Started shooting 8 years ago...only summer to fall season, for 2 years. Stopped for 6 years, and picked it up again last fall. I was shooting 2" groupings at 50 meters.
I'll definitely suck this spring [:'(]...only been shooting at home with a distance of 8 meters. And only shooting once a week. |
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Off and on for a year. I really need to start praticing again. I always have fun shooting but having too much time, one arrow and no money, i am just haven't been into it much but not giving up.
Not getting any kills yet has also been a bummer [:o] |
RE: How long have you been shooting?
I've been shooting 16 years .Started in Cub Scouts.
Zac123 keep shooting have fun .Read read read read read all you can. Find a pro shop ask question after question.I shoot 3D so my shooting is pretty good . But before i go to the woods i shoot a few arrows .the day before my morning hunt ,and in the afternoon before my evening hunt. I can't stand not to being able to shoot my bow .A day or two tops . I'm at a 3D range on the weekends .My first shoot will be in 20 degree weather ouch!!!!! Febuary 29th.:) Where do you shoot at TRIPLESPOOL? |
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Arthur P is exactly right. Sometimes my groups may spread out, buy my first shot seems to always be good, and that is really what you need to stive for, especially for in season shooting.
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
I have been shooting for about 3-4 straight years in a row now, and I think I shot better when I first started than I do now!:D I love the sport and the enjoyment of being good at something other than SPORTS! All the kids at my school are sports jocks, and i'm a hickbilly i guess you could say.;) I look forward to many years to come enjoying God's wilderness and the art of bowhunting.:D;)
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Seriously for over 30 years. Been shooting a firearm a few years more. Used to take guns to school for show and tell.:D If you tried that today you'd be arrested, jailed, expelled from school, and what not. Times change.[&o]

RE: How long have you been shooting?
Been shooting a bow and bowhunting since 1987.........
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
Been shooting 51 years, and still not very good. But I sure enjoy it. In 1964 I was in the army at Fort eustis, Virginia. Went on a leave with a buddy to northern New York to hunt wood chucks. Brought my 222 mag rem 700 along on the plane. Held it in my lap in a soft case. Nobody questioned it. I would be in jail today. Times have changed.

RE: How long have you been shooting?
Yea they have. You really could bring guns to school?
|
RE: How long have you been shooting?
A lot of the kids had Winchesters hanging in the rifle racks of their pickups when I was in high school. Now we've got kids being expelled for having butter knives in their lunch boxes.[&o]

RE: How long have you been shooting?
