Well, I wouldn't compare myself to anybody else since I'm a bit... oversized. I've been known to hunt with 72" longbows without any problems, so my 46" ProTec is a walk in the park.

But, logically speaking, if you don't have any treestand problems with the longer bows you've been using, how can you have any with a shorter bow?

I hunted with the Ultratec for a couple years.First the 2001 model and then the 2003 model.The only issues I had were trying to stalk in deep cover and/or crawling on the ground.The Ultratec was a bit long for that but I am only 5'9" and that does make a difference.If you are "oversized" like old Arthur,that shouldn't be a problem but you obviously aren't that big considering the 29" draw.I can shoot the bow sitting flat on my but so the a-a isn't an issue with that either.Just the crawling around.


If you put the bow on a 4 wheeler,you may notice it catching more tree limbs and bushes too.


As far as a tree stand problem,I have had none to speak of.But I also don't use any railing on my bow stands either.


Of course the faster the bow is capable of being,the more ke it is going to deliver ,all things equall.That is the main reason I stated with your poundage and draw length you will have no problems with any of the 3 choices.


Don't worry too much about it.Whichever you choose,I am sure you will be happy with it but it looks to me like you really want the Protec so go for it.;)

I'm 6'5" with a 30 inch draw, but I still find my 03 Protec to be too long for hunting. This is just my opinion. Others may use it without a problem, but I had all kinds of problems with it bumping into things at bad times.

Now, most of my problems came when I would bump the bow on the railing of the treestand (Summit Viper) or tried shooting over the rail at steep angles.

I'm sure alot of my problems could be solved by switching to a treestand without a rail, but (please don't laugh) I am afraid of heights and that railing is the only thing keeping me comfortable enough to hunt out of a stand. I get nervous without the rail even though that rail probably wouldn't save me in an emergency.

But, switching to a bow 3 inches shorter ATA does the trick for me. I have no trouble hunting with a 35 inch Martin Cougar Mag, but can't hunt with the 38 inch Protec.

I've never understood the arguement about a bow being too long for hunting. How much differene can a few inches make? I prefer a long bow, its more forgiving, more stable, and more accurate for me.

BOB@BBT, you will be happy with any of the bows you are considering.

I have to say this again.....I have 3 protecs, and 3 ultratecs, not to mention the razortec and xtec.

The protecs set up exactly the same as a ultratec are exactly the same speed regardless of hoyts IBO ratings. You will not give up any speed by going to the protec. I am not trying to sell you on the protec, just letting you know that if speed is a consideration, you don`t need to worry about it with the protec.

Big Country, that's what the guy at the Hoyt pro shop said also. So that must be the case, which is great news. That's where I kinda got sold on the Protec. Sounds like you can shoot the thing sideways with your feet and it still groups well. But I'm still looking. It's early. I'm going to start a new post on the Renegade TR-4 and Nugent bow. Both look like nice shooters also. I have an old Renegade Tominator, but don't care for the 6 7/8" brace ht.
Oh yeah, no railings to bang a bow on here. I like heights! LOL ;)

No. I have hunted with bows longer than that in the past with no real complaints in the treestand or on the ground. However, I prefer the feel of a shorter bow as well as the portability/compactness. I believe it to be more of a personal preference within reason.
