Funnels

I have been hearing everyone talking about how productive it is to hunt funnels and everything like that. I know what a funnel is but i'm not sure how to locate one. I tried looking at topo maps, and just by doing some regular scouting, but i can never really seem to find one. I was wondering, what are some of you guys' ways of locating funnels?

My easiest way is to find where two big woods meet with crop fields on both sides providing an hour glass shape. I usually hunt right in the little patch of woods inbetween the two big woods. Deer don't like to be out in the open if they don't have to be. Especially bucks. Hope this helps.;)

I don't know if topo maps will show them. I like to do some scouting during the winter to see in the snow high traffic areas. I look for were multiple trails come together. Also, funnels are naturally created by bodies of water, like lakes. I own wet lands that run on one side of a lake. There is a spot in my back woods where 3 trails come into one. This is where I will be placing a tree stand.

Funnels can also be created by gullies or swamps where deer have to travel along a certain path to get through it.

I hope this helps???

;) Ya gotta have a little traffic cop mentality in you. What you are looking for is concealed traffic areas that deer frequent. Try scouting year round because their patterns do change throughout the year. Put the time and effort in and you will find these areas. When you scout, go very slowly, constantly looking for signs, trails, scrapes, rub lines, poop, blow downs, etc.. These critters leave their markings. You can and will find these areas with effort and practise.

RE: Funnels

A funnel is anything that channels movements to a certain area, doesn't just mean bush coming to a point, bottlenecks (like was mentioned before)..anything that forces deer to an area is a funnel. Ie: a fence strand which is down can be an example of not the most classical funnel.
