Personally I like Rocket expandables. I have used the Sidewinder, Mini-Blaster 3L's and the Steelheads with GREAT success! Cut big holes and leave great bloodtrails!!

I'll be interested in the results on this myself, I am going to switch this coming season.

Over the last 6 or 7 seasons I've experimented with several brands of mechs and one has truly risen to the top....Rockets.I love the Rocket line-up,from the MiniBlasters and Sidewinders to the Steelheads that I keep going back to. I honestly believe that the Rocket Steelhead is the truest flying, hardest hitting, most devestating deployable blade arrowhead ever developed.I havetaken a fair number of deer with several mechs but of the 14 taken with Steelheads,NOT ONE has gone farther than 60 yards with the majority of these falling within easy sight and something like 30 to 40 yards (HONEST).A true bullet with butterfly wings...the Rocket Steelhead, give "em a try.You owe it to the game you hunt.

I was very pleased with the Rocky Mountain Snyper this past season.

Good luck.

I have been EXTREMELY impressed with Rocket Aeroheads. There is literally no way this head can fail to open based on its design.

A few years ago, I took a turkey with the Miniblaster 3. I held the pin at twenty yards at the base of her neck, and hit her a touch high (about an inch or so up the neck). When I got to her, she only had about a 1/4" of skin connecting her head to the body.

If it'll open up on soft turkey skin with such devastation, it'll work on anything. My entrance holes with this head on deer are almost big enough to stick my fist in!!

Took two deer with Shockwaves this season very good results. Im going to use them again next year but I will look for a mech with perhaps a little sharper factory blade.......hill

Shockwaves, I have killed 2 deer with them this past season. I had great penetration with them and lots of blood. I would reccommend them to other hunters. hope this helps you out.

I've very lucky with SpitFire 100gr in the past; but I'm going Bear Hunting over Bait next Spring in Canada and I'm just don't know what to do about my broadheads.
I'm very happy with the SpitFire but I dont Know if this head is enought for a Bear; since some people say that you souldn't use mech. in bears because of the tick hair.
What Do you guys Think? Should I use Mech. or Fixed ?
My setup gives me 71Ke with a 400gr arrow and 283 f/s.

RE: The Best Mechanical

I would definitely use a fixed blade for bear, the very few reliable reports I've heard of failures were on large fall bears.
I don't know which is the best, but I know if you hit a deer properly with a shockwave, they'll go less than 60yds.
I plan on trying the snyper this upcoming year, as they seem to perform the best in penetration tests, outperforming fixed blade heads in most cases.

I used the Rocky Mt. Snyper this year and took 3 deer with it. One tried to jump the string (note I said tried <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>) but I got her in the spine and she dropped right there. The buck I shot dropped about 40 yards away and the other doe about 70 yards away. The one thing I did notice was that the holes were not that big and the blood trails were not great. On the buck the blood trail was non existent so I was lucky to have seen him drop. The heads did their job, but I don't know if I will use them again.

I took this RAM last November in Texas; the shot was 55yrd long; I use a SpitFire 100gr @ 283f/s. He ran only 20yrds.
I don't Tink I would have done it with a Fixed Broadhead.

Rocket's Steelhead 100's...with 1 1/8&quot; cutting diameter unbelievable penetration. My hunting partner got a complete pass-through on his coues buck (Arizona whitetail) at 50 yards, last month.

I SWITCHED TO MECHANICALS THIS YEAR. I SHOT FOUR DEER AND KILLED FOUR WITH NAP SHOCKWAVE 100'S, BUT ONLY GOT A COMPLETE PASS THROUGH ON ONE OF THEM. I AM THINKING OF TRYING THE ROCKETS NEXT YEAR. I HAVE HEARD NOTHING BUT PRAISE CONCERNING THEM.

Which is best is not always what it seems. Everyones setup is differnt, and not all heads are made to work the same way. That said, In all of my testing, the very best mechanical broadhead I have found is the Rocky Snyper. It flys great, the blades are shaving sharp from the factory, penitration is excellent, and It is one of the fastest opening heads going. I have tested around 30 broadheads, and the snypers are the best mechanical in my personal opinion. I also know of a pretty nice buck, that wishes they were never made! My next choice would be the new archery products shockwave, followed by the rocket steel head. My biggest problem with rocket heads is that their blades will not shave hair out of the package. Remember that even with mechanicals you still need to tune your bow well, and you should not shoot any mechanical head unless you have at least 55 ft/lbs of bow energy.

I took three deer with the NAP Spitire 100 this year. The exit wound looks just like a 12 ga. slug. I also took a turkey with the same Spitfire and it had a 2 in.exit hole in its breast after I shot it in the back. NAP claims that their steel is the sharpest in the industry.

I got both my bucks this year with shockwaves 100. Great head. YOu will be happy if you try them but the deer wont.

My favorite continues to be the Rocket Steelhead 100. Others have sang their praises earlier in this thread so I don't think I have to go any further...:)

5 Shot: The Snypers only come in a two blade... right? I just feel funny about a blade that has to open forward in order to cut. Seems like a soft spot(like lung tissue) would allow it to be pushed back in. What stops that from happening?

Antler Eater 02-12-2002 05:14 PM

RE: The Best Mechanical

David, the forward motion or energy from the arrow pushes the blades back and in the open position. As long as the arrow continues to move forward the blades remain open.

I was trying to recall all of the mechs. I have used over the years on deer...Let's see, snypers, various models of Rockets, Wasp Jackhammer, Marden, Gametracker Firstcut, Triska, and probably some others that I can't remember.

I can honestly tell you that none of the heads I used ever cost me a deer. Certainly Mechs. aren't for everyone but as mention those that qualify energy wise and tune their equipment, the mechs. will do a number on deer sized game.

The head that did the most tissue damage consistantly of all the heads I tried was Rockets Hammerhead 3L. Four of the five bucks shot with this head were complete pass throughs. Most fell over dead within view. Huge holes and generous blood trails were the norm. The heads look like blades from a blender when they were done, but they always did a number on the deer.

I like the NAP shockwaves and the spitfires. Both r really deadly!

RE: The Best Mechanical

David, antler eater pretty well summed it up. The buck I killed this year with the snypers was a classic text book shot, the head slid in between the ribs going in and coming out. I hit nothing but hide, and soft tissue, and a rock on the far side of the deer. The entrance wound was larger than the exit wound( I latter found that this is common with the snypers, and is a good thing). The exit wound was still impressive, and was the actual cutting diameter of the head, 1 3/8&quot;. the only thing I can tell you is to pick up a pack and try them. If you like a mechanical that penitrates like a fixed blade head, comes from the pack sharp, and is plenty strong, you will like the snypers. They don't cut as big a hole as some other mechanicals, but You won't have to worry about penitration with them if you shoot a well tuned setup with the proper amount of KE.

I have only used mechs 1 year, they were Wasp Jakhammers. From now on they are the only ones I will ever use. I started a few of my friends on Jakhammers, never had a problem, always deadly, arrow flys like a field tip. Kinda of expensive, well worht it!

Shockwave 100s here too (thanks 5shot). KE @ 61. Doe ran 20 or 30 max. Buck took 2 steps. Devestating. I would totally recommend them given enough KE is used.
Hypertec, there was a quite extensive broadhead poll around the end of last year. See if you can dig that up.
