Parallels to Zaft?

http://www.buckmasters.com/buckmaste...0123Never.html
Check out the story. Is it a kill or pickup? Brings up some interesting questions, couldn't save the meat, but still in the record books. Comments?

He needs his butt kicked along with his guide! This deer should go into the record book, but not the so called hunter.

Something stinks, and it isn't that rotten buck. To shoot a buck at 150yds with a 300win mag and not have any blood......hmmmmm, where did that shot hit? And for the guide to not look around more, that really stinks.

Kanga 02-11-2002 10:16 AM

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

how in hell can he call himself a hunter
like Taz said kick his butt and the guides
They should have gone back in the morning to continue the search not sit in a stand hoping for another buck to come up if one did it would most likely have been lost too
IMO it was a pick up nothing more nothing less.

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

WHAT A JOKE! It was "his day" even though all he found was the head and antlers. I think that it would have been "my worst day". He found it 40 yards away. He couldn't have looked around. That is a true joke, and I thought the Zaft buck was bad.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

I agree Taz!!! He needs an arse whoopin and a reality check. Piece of dung! I find it sick that he is actually proud of himself and is going to take the rack home and brag to everyone about the monster that he shot. 150 yards....I'll never understand the thrill in that.

stealthycat 02-11-2002 10:56 AM

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

This buck and the Zaft deer were the results of poor shooting - lost deer that were not recovered.

The guy has the rack, but his story is tainted. How can you be proud of wounding a deer and not recovering it ? Thats beyond me, and says volumes to the non-hunting community.

halcon 02-11-2002 11:05 AM

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

Doesn't sound like much of a hunter , Unfortunately you see a lot of them that don't bother to look ,or don't know how in the first place .

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

To shoot at deer any deer, and only look for it for a few hours in fading light, then go back hunting is a major sin .

That buck is NOT a kill in my book. There is a very good chance he would of found it the next mourning but never even gave it a try.

Stories like that do make me sick. Bad shots happen, less than perfect decisions in the heat of the moment happen. Giving up after a "quick" look as to not waste hunting time should never happen and has no excuse.

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

If he didn't find blood and the deer didn't act like it was hit I can understand not looking for the deer any longer.

Do you think he might have said these things as a way out of scrutiny? You notice the article states that he said"I shot at a monster" he never said he hit it.It sounds fishy to me.

Jeffmiller, I have alwyas wondered what the heck does your signature mean?

PICKUP !!

Tazman 02-11-2002 12:08 PM

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

Charlie not to start a stink, but he did say he radioed the guide and said "I shot a monster". he knew he had hit it and I bet the guide did to. They were just to lazy to do the ethical thing.

That's amazing. I agree, how could the deer go little distance with no blood found where he was shot? And the fool seems proud of himself!

Phil.

Taz, here is the exact qoute from the article.
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>. I waited a full 45 minutes and radioed Gordy, my guide, and told him I had shot at a monster.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

I'm not saying I believe the story, just noticed how he was trying to cover his butt.

If sleep was going to be a task, why
did the guy go back and get in the tripod?
Would he have shot another &quot;monster&quot; if it
had walked past? Yes his story parrallels
Zafts to a degree. I thought Zaft put a
whole lot more effort in attempting to find
his deer than the other hunter. Pope and
Young know the story and it will be their
choice whether to accept Zafts deer as the
new world record. Whatever they decide about
it is fine with me. I have no stake in the
matter.

That is a sad thing to hear...setting a bad example. I can't beleive he would write something like that and then surprised buckmasters would put it up... Guess we here at hunting.net know better than to be lazy like that.

They have alot of nerve calling that story 'Never Give Up' after not finding the deer that night he GAVE UP and the next morning instead of looking for the deer he went back and hunted his stand again. While hunting the next day he kept hearing crows in the area and it didnt even occur to him what that was all about. Well duh. PICK UP.

BTBowhunter 02-12-2002 02:15 PM

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

If Zafts buck is questionable this one is definitely a pickup! I can't believe this guy had the gall to publish the story!

if you can track the deer you shot--then you recover your deer anything else??????????????
WHAT CAME FIRST--THE GUY NEXT DOOR FINDING THE HEAD OF A RECORD BOOK BUCK OR THE GUY CLAIMING HE SHOT THAT RECORD BOOK BUCK?JUST DOESN'T SEEM LIKE A RESPONSIBLE HUNT--AT ALL!!

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

Has anyone written to buckmasters about this? I think we should, and am heading that way right now...My beef is he was back in his stand and did not put in the effort at recovery.

RE: Parallels to Zaft?

In fact, here is what I sent:

Mr. Piper,

I read the article, &quot;Never Give up&quot; by Keith Bailey online at http://www.buckmasters.com/buckmaste...0123Never.html
and I was rather displeased with it.

It seems from the article that the hunter shot a nice deer, but did very little to recover the animal. In fact, the next morning he was back on stand. I believe an ethical hunter who believed he had shot a deer would have spent more time searching for the deer. In fact he claims he found the deer a mere 40 yards into the brush, I guess from where he shot it. I understand deer can be hard to find, but searching into the night and then going back on stand the next morning is not a standard that I feel Buckmasters should portray.

The honest and effective was to use this article is a case in point to discuss how to recover a deer before the meat spoils. It sounds like with a little effort the author could have recovered the deer and been back in the lodge by noon the next morning with a little effort. The author should not be proud of this hunt as the meat was spoiled thanks to his lack of effort. Perhaps if he had spent 3 days searching before he found it I would feel differently, but in my point of view his lack of effort in recovering the deer was poor judgement.

I enjoy the articles and the website but hope to see some better articles than this in the future (as I have in the past).
