what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
As most of y'all know my treestand was stolen so I got another one for Christmas.I didn't like it once I got it so I sent it back.I've been lookin' and lookin' and can't find one I want in stock anywhere so I was thinkin' that I'd use the treestand $$ and get into bow huntin'.My (our-hm and i) birthday is in Oct. and Archery starts at the end of Sept. so I could possibly get the treestand as an early birthday present. What would y'all do? Keep in mind that if something bad would happen financially I'd get screwed and not get my treestand before Blackpowder starts and treestands are the only way to hunt where we do.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
FL life is full of risks
Get the bow and worry about the stand later once you get into bow hunting the black powder wont be brought out again so if you get into money trouble you can always sell the gun to pay for a stand just my thoughts |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
I'm real sorry to hear about your stand. Are you talking about fixed position or climbers?
I'm kinda in that position myself. I know I'm gonna be in a new climber next season so I need to figure out the best time to make the investment in order to stay safe finacially. The sooner the better in order to have some preseason runs with it and definitly don't want to get caught up in the last minute hysteria right before archery season. In reguards the starting to bowhunt, yes by all means yes- I mean whatever it takes to get started. Get a loan, have yard sales- somethin; just get started. Getting a bow, getting proficient with it, and starting to bowhunt is allot bigger issue than when and which stand to get. I'm really glad to hear that and can't wait to start hearing your stories, reading your questions and watching your progress. Getting in to archery and bowhunting was one of the best dicisions I've ever made. You are going to love it! Good luck with your decisions. |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
You GO GIRL. Get that bow. We need you in the bowhunting fraternity. Once you get it and get sneaking up close on those Florida jackrabbits you won't care about that smoke pole. You'll find a way I'm sure. You'll never regret it. Go to a GOOD shop and get fitted properly. Have fun shopping. You can only use that stand during season. You can use that bow all year long.
P.S. I don't do much of it but I know you fish a lot. Can you say BOWFISHING??????<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Edited by - davidmil on 02/11/2002 11:02:00 |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
Get the BOW!!!!! I will keep my fingers crossed for you! You have not seen deer until you have hunted bow. You will see 10-20 times of deer you see during gun and they are no where near as spooky as they are during gun. One of these days I will score my biggest trophy yet (except the twins future kills) my first bow kill. I have killed quite a few with a gun and I will be honest with you, I will be more excited about my first bow kill, no matter what it is than my biggest 8 point I killed in 74.

Hmmmm, let's see. You're asking that question in the Bowhunting forum?!?
I think your mind is made up; you're just looking for confirmation! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Let us know what kind of bow you got! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
Plenty of people hunt from the ground and many are successful year after year. Get a bow and go for it. Don't let the idea that you MUST have a treestand first stop you.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
I would go for the bow now. You can always get the stand for you birthday (my wife has ways of getting what she wants for hers). Get a good lightweight climber while you are at it. It will give you so many more options.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
fl.huntress;I have been where you are now,as you said you can't hunt where we hunt without a stand.I'ved tried it.
get the bow now and get started and pratice, pratice, pratice.then before the season get the stand. glad to see you getting into the sport, keep us up on how things go. I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
If you are really serious about getting into bow hunting, I'd get the bow now. You'll need the time to get tuned up and practice.
I know what you meen by "needing" a climber too! It is about the only way to hunt in some places. My B-day is in October too, so I usually start whinning early, because if I don't get what I need early, it is too late to tune and practice for our bow season. Just keep an eye out for a good bargain on the climber, you could find a good deal on one second hand. Good luck with the bow and stand!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
Get the bow, if you're like my girl, you'll get what you want, when you want, so the stand will take care of itself. You won't regret it, trust us.

Hey Fl.Huntress!
Sorry to hear 'bout your stand being lifted.Unfortunatly, there are some sorry souls out there! I agree with most of the others, get the bow now, life is short you know. You will love bowhunting! One note though,go to a local pro shop and shoot them all,get one that fits ya and you are comfortable with. Also don't try to pull to much weight, that's a real common problem with alot of new-comers(and some that have been around awhile too). As far as the stand goes, you might look at a light-weight stand that you could pack in and out. There are a ton of them on the market. Also pop-up ground blinds are another solution. Whatever you decide,I wish you the best of luck.Let me know how it turns out! Later.....Whackman |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
I WOULD GET THE BOW, YOU WILL GET FAR MORE ENJOYMENT OUT OF IT THAN YOU COULD IMAGINE. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
BOW for sure. Got my wife into bowhunting about 10 years ago. Can't keep her away now. You can get a fine entry level bow for around $300. You may even consider driving up to Gainesville to the Bear Archery Museum and pro shop (take the Archer road exit off I-75, go left (west) for about a half-mile... it's on the left). It's a nifty place, and they sell some good Jennings bows up there. There also used to be a decent archery pro shop in Melbourne and one on the east side of Orlando. Good luck to you.

Id get a bow, and grab a stand later!

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
get the bow!!! it was the best decision i ever made. you will be hooked way before the season starts. one bit of advice a bow is not a gun if you do not practice every week you will loose it. it seems every year i practice, practice, practice, buy the time season starts i am shooting pretty consistant and am so pumped for opening day, but by the end of the season i am not so consistant because practice has turned into hunting.
My advice PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. |
RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
Get the bow, I never thought I would quit duck hunting to go deer hunting. But ever since I took up bow hunting in 93 I have duck hunted less and less each year and don't miss it. Depending on your draw lenght there are several good bows out there. MT Sport by Hoyt and the Magnatec are excellent in their price range. Start with a good used one that is not more than a year old.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
I vote for the bow too. :) There are a variety of treestands and bows out there. I am sure you could find some combination that would allow you to get the bow now and still have a little leftover to start saving for the treestand...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Oooooh! Get the bow!! I think you will love it! You may be able to get a great deal on a 2001 model this time of year too.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
fl.huntress sorry to hear about your stand being stolen. If the person who stole it calls himself or herself a hunter, they have no place being in the woods if they dont have better ethics than that. Anyway I would say that if you go for the bow it will be a decision you will not regret. I started bowhunting last year. I bought my bow around this time last year and started to practice with it. And when the season opened here in October I got my deer in the opening week. The feeling you have taking your first deer with a bow, after all the practice and preparing, is one that is almost hard to describe. Good luck with whichever way you choose to go.

RE: what would y'all do? bow or treestand.
Well I've decided...i'm gettin' the treestand.-lol-just kiddin'<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I'm going to go to BASS Outdoor World in Orlando on Thursday and get setup with my first bow.I can't wait.I'm like a kid in a candy store when I go there so my husband's takin' me.He hunts w/ a crossbow due to disabilities but he used to hunt with a bow and my neighbor is really into it so I should get lots of "learnin" in.I'm still gonna need y'all for support. Thanks so much (all of you) for your opinions. If I don't like it can I blame y'all?-lol
