RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

im for it, i think if u shoot a nice deer with a bow, no matter what the let-off, u should b recognized. it is so hard 2 do it in the first place b/c the deer has 2 b so close, it shouldnt matter how much let-off u have. if u shoot one with a bow u have already defied the odds. jmo tho

wut does every1 else have 2 say

How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?
My opinion is I dont really care. Doesnt matter to me as any animal I take with my bow is a trophy. Im happy for those who wish to enter "the book" but im not really to worried about getting in there.

I'm glad they changed it so the big deer that have been killed with higher letoffs can now be recognized......

RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

When i got my bow I had the moduals changed out to meet the 65% that P/Y required, then I found out that if you shoot a bow greater than the 65% requirements is if you don't pull back all the way you meet these perameters, seems like they got loop holes in every thing. To answer your question is NO, I do not like it, but I am not the one who draws the line, maybe they should have a recurve, compound or even a crossbow catagory. I personally strieve to hunt trophies and I have my equipment set up so that I can qualify when I get the state record and by the way I saw him year before last. ;) Bobby

RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

If you look at the stand point from a long bow to a recurve bow and then a compound w/65%-verses 85%, I don't see what all the beef was about in the first place. It's about time! ;)

For me I get personal satisfaction from an animal I take, so I haven't entered any past animals taken and probably never will. Besides, I probably won't buy a copy of the book just to see my name entered.

By the way......the asterisk is not big enough.:D

Its about time. You still have to get close to make the shot. And what's with the astericks if an animal is taken with a bow >65% let off. You don't see B&C putting one on an animal shot with a "Magnum" caliber. Just a thought.

RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

Will you feel the same when (and if) they come out with a 100% let off bow?

When does a bow stop being a bow?

The question is of the same flavor as the question of crossbows. Not the same question, but in the same vein.

RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

In 1996 i enterd my first whitetail into the P&Y recards with a buck that i took that year. after the 60 day drying period i got in touch with an offical P&Y scorer. he told me to drop the rack off by his house one afternoon and he would score it for me. the next day he called me and cogratulated me and told me to come by and pick up the rack and what to do to get my name recorded. when i got to him home he told me i had to sign an affidavit set forth by the P&Y club under the fair chase rule and to take three photos of the antlers left, right and front and told me what the recording fee was.and where to send it. but at no time did he ask to see my bow although i did bring it with me to his home just in case! My bow was set at 60% letoff. sence then i have enter into the book two more times and with diffrent measurer`s and again they never ask to see my bow. the affidivit you sign is saying you follow the rules and are telling the truth about how and where and by what meathed you took it.In my opinion it is an honner to be in the pope&young big game records.but if wish not to enter. I inderstand. In my opinion the rule of the 60% let should have never been made. I have always felt this way about that rule! although i followed all the rules set by the P&Y club . The letoff of a bow really does not have much to do with fair chase at all! In my opinion! any one that takes a trophy that meets the reqiurments and follows the laws in the state in which he hunts by the department of fish and game and the department of natual resourcses and by all other rules set by the Boone&crockett and the pope&young clubs. Should have had there names entered all a long. And for the true outstanding trophy they have taken WITHOUT ASTERSTISKS! Its an honner to have my name in the same book as fred bear and chuck adams.and many other well known bowhunters, not that any one will ever really no who i or really care`s. But if wish not to enter your trophy i for any other reasons i under stand! after all you killed it it`s your choice? good hunting! RTA47.

RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

I think that there were guys who had higher letoff bows, who developed attitudes against P&Y because of the rule. I felt that this took away from the focus on fair chase and sportsmanship that P&Y promotes. This rule change takes away the animosity and on balance is better for the sport.

RE: How do you feel about P & Y changing the let-off rule?

O.k. then when does bow equipment stop being bow equipment! The industry will constantly keep modifying or improving archery, as far as the let off rule, I feel is'nt that big a deal. But I do feel there is more advantage with the new bow epuipment on the market nowadays, such as arrows, sights, and rests.

As I said I did buy a 70% let off bow. I said I was happy with the rule being changed. I gave it some thought. I really don't care. It would be nice to have my name in the book, but I don't really care about it. It's kinda like hunting for sport to me.

The original reason for P&Y was to honor the animal not the hunter. Today I believe this has been lost. I wonder if they were to really look into how many "book animals" were taken how many would be disqualified ?

Founded in 1961 as a nonprofit scientific organization..............The Club advocates and encourages responsible bowhunting by promoting quality, fair chase hunting, and sound conservation practices. Today it fosters and nourishes bowhunting excellence and acts in the best interest of our bowhunting heritage everywhere. The Club promotes and participates in improving sound wildlife conservation and wise use of our natural resources.

Through its Records Program, the Club encourages quality bowhunting by awakening interest in outstanding examples of this continent's big game animals. The Club records for posterity scientific data on North American big game taken with bow and arrow. It conducts ongoing recording periods and every two years presents appropriate recognition to the finest specimens submitted. These biennial presentations honor the quality of individual examples of North American big game species and promote the ideals of fair chase.
You know that if they were truely for the promotion of the bow hunting sport and for "scintifically" honoring the animals taken then the 65% let off rule was bogus in the first place.

Had the club been formed in 1990 instead of 1961 then there would have been no problem with high let off bows. The only reason that rule existed in the first place was because 65% was the let off of bows at that time. Then you have a bunch of old farts that feel they're skills with their 65% bows are somehow superior to the rest of us and feel the need to not keep promoting the bowhunting sport and only promote what they feel is apropriate.

I didn't know that. I thought it was to honor the hunter and his accomplishment.

There is a benefit to the changing of the rules. Some people couldn't hold a 65% let off bow for that long. It's kinda like kicking the weak out of the sport.

Don't kid yourself, if it was not for Pope and Young, the people who promoted archery, and those who continue to promote bowhunting and fair chase bowhunting, it would not be what it is today! Bet you most if not all of the bow manufacturers are somewhat thankful.

I guarantee you could shoot a bow with 65% and even a lower letoff as well as you do a high letoff bow!

Funny thing this letoff deal........most archers that shoot 80-85% letoff bows I know, jack their poundage up.:D

I would enter my trophy in the book if I ever had a chance to take an animal of that maturity. As for the time being I am not going all out to have my name in a book just because I hunt. Once again, I would do it if I had the chance to take an animal of that size.
