If not "Chief Two Arrows"... maybe "Chief Short-N-Arrow".

Dave:

If your arrow fell off the string, I would automatically guess that you're not using a string loop. That, however, wouldn't necessarilly be an accurate assessment. It could also have been the use of short arrow nocks, a release that 'pushed' the nock off the string, or a worn serving in conjunction with a loose nock.

I'm just curious. Can you elaborate?

As far as your loss of meat, I would consider that the other animals in the woods aren't going hungry to be a redeaming factor. Congrats on enduring the weather and pursuing your animal.

I went out Friday AM and had a three-legged doe take 20+ minutes to give me a 20 yard broadside shot. I thought it was a 'slam dunk'; but, a sapling that I didn't see in the early light proved otherwise. I've got the beautifully broadhead cut sapling hanging over my picture in the shop as a testiment to how s**t happens.:D

I went out again with Davidmil and a friend on Saturday morning and the result is in another thread. Danged, it was really cold with that wind at my back 25' up in a tree.;)

Good luck next year.

[8D] That's the spirit, DaveH. You were fortunate with that moving shot. I am glad you backed off, suspecting liver hit. Count your blessings and have a great off season. Pack that quiver my friend!!

;) I figured you would save that twig. Nothing like a reminder to help even experienced bow hunters re-focus, re-think and look forward to the next encounter at dim lite. Dang critters are smart. Always seem to be moving when you can hardly see and then when you hit one, more often than not the suckers head to the swamps, creek beds or the gnarlyest crap they can find.

That will give me plenty of meat for the freezer. Counting her, I took 3 does and 2 bucks this year with my bow. I was able to salvage a smal part of the right hindquarter and better than half of that backstrap. I lost both tenderloins[:@], but everything else was fine.

Len, I do use a string loop and my nocks fit on the string about like they should--snug, but not too tight. I had the serving replaced just before the season and even though I've NEVER had an arrow come off during practice, this happened to me twice during the season. I was taking some video of her in the field with my digital camera and I think in my haste to put the camera away, I bumped the arrow enough to knock it loose. After the arrow fell, I did get more video of her at 20 yards from my tree where she was laying.

As for arrows . . . as I said in the post, I usually hunt with a quiver full of arrows--5 with broadheads and one practice arrow with a dull broadhead. I removed the practice arrow just before I left the truck--wish I hadn't done that.
