Shed Hunting

Been doing a little shed hunting already this year. Have found a couple of small antlers around so far. Is there any tricks to finding a matching pair, or any certain places to look for bigger antlers?

Some people make some "traps" for them. I just do a lot of walking and will walk the same place more than once and find them usually I end up finding some biggins sooner or later.

no tricks...just practice...like anything else a person gets a knack for it...knowing where the bucks in their areas bed and travel during this time of the year..when they are dropping their bones. Good luck...wear out your boots...

Actually, I have found a trick. If the antler looks like it was forced off. Walk the trails back from where you think the buck was coming from. If it looks as if it fell off, walk the trails to where you think the buck was heading.

This especially works good for antlers with some size to them. Smaller racked deer may carry their single antlers for some time due to the lack of weight on their heads.

I went shed hunting yesterday and found a shed from a young buck with 4 points on it. The base was stained red from blood indicating its freshness. The grassy hilltop area where I found it is a mecca for sheds. I've found about 8 up there in the last few years. I'll head up there again in a week or so to see if I can find more.

Went out yesterday and found three but none from this year. We saw a couple of good bucks still sporting a full rack and a couple with one horn so they should be done any time now I would imagine.
