Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Just curious,
What's the straightest bowhunting arrow you can find? Now I'm talking Bowhunting here, not 3D. I shoot some 3D but with my bowhunting set up, so those tiny little arrows with the 1 1/2" vanes don't count. What do you all use? I currently use Terminators and know there are straighter arrows out there. Also does a thousandth of an inch really matter? Your opinions are welcome. |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I think Easton ACCs are right up there in terms of straightness levels.....001 if I remember correctly. However, there is advertised straightness levels and actual straightness levels. The ACCs would be hard to beat in terms of the latter...and many folks use them for hunting.

RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I don't really believe it matters if it's .006 or .003 or .001 for hunting. I have used all and I can't tell the difference between one or the other based on impact points. so I don't worry about it. I work on form and anchor and smooth release to gain accuracy..
Prehaps some of the top contenders on 3D and Spots can tell based upon where they impact. but most of us can't shoot that well to tell anyway. |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
You're shooting Terminators. If you like them, you'll LOVE Terminator Selects.
I agree about the ACC's but downscale the price and you're at XX78's, which are plenty good. Even XX75's are darn good as well. From what I hear, to get a straight all carbon shaft, you're looking at paying ACC prices anyway. I disagree with Bees about straightness though. Maybe if you don't shoot that well, you won't tell much difference, but the difference is there nonetheless. A fair shooter will shoot better with an ACC than he will with one of those overglorified tomato stakes a lot of companies are selling for arrows. Maybe the extra cost will even cause him enough concern to really bear down and stop being so flippin' careless about his shooting technique. Enough of that and he'll start turning into a pretty decent shot before long. ;) |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I don't know aurthur, I"v gotten deer using arrows with all of those straightness specs.. Just didn't seem to make any differance. I was able to get all of them into the vital zone..
Now when I shoot 3D I use Carbon Express cxl 250 and I don't even know what the spec is on it.. |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Remember, you get what you pay for! With that in mind and your not just concerned about money, I vote for GoldTip 3D Pro. They are very straight. If you spin test each arrow and find that one is not straight, send it back and they will replace it. They do have good customer service. If found a dozen 3D pro's on the internet for $69, unfletched. I can't remember the website. i will post it when I run across it.

RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Not to rain on the ACC parade, but I found the majority of mine were not straight enough for hunting after shooting them for a year. I didn't shoot them to death either. I will be going to Forge bow's extreme arrow(.00145) is their stated straightness. I know several pro staff shooters that swear by them.

RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Another vote for GoldTip 3-D Pros.... straightness of .001" and a weight tolerance of +/- 1 grain. Plus, they aren't nearly as expensive as the other arrows with the same specs. I got a dozen that were cut and fletched with nocks and inserts installed for $79.95 I got mine here......

RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
BM,
I thought you were shooting Carbon Express CXLs?? |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
...straightness of .001" and a weight tolerance of +/- 1 grain. How long do they hold onto their straightness and spine? I have yet to see any 100% carbon shafts that can retain their original straightness and spine for longer than a couple months of hard shooting. Maybe they last for guys that only shoot 20-30 arrows a week, but for someone like me that shoots maybe a thousand arrows a week... Before someone flings it out there: "But the Pros shoot them." Yeah, but they don't tell you how many dozens of arrows they go through in a season, do they. commandr45... Two words. Arrow Straightener. Works wonders for keeping aluminum and aluminum core arrows in top shape. I've got aluminum arrows that are 5 years old and still check straight within +/- .001" because of my straightener. |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
ACCs are hard to beat, but I won't shoot them........too dang expensive for hunting. If you want aluminum, XX78 is the best IMO.
Carbons.......I shoot Easton Carbon Evolution, but am looking hard at Terminator Selects(heavier weight) and the new Easton Axis. Although the Axis's advertised straightness is not as straight as some others, members here who shoot them love them so far. Besides, one important aspect..........I want an arrow shaft that will retain its straightness longer, not just for the initial haul. I'd like to see a report done on that......which shafting will keep its straightness longer, under normal shooting and care circumstances! I'd guess the thicker walled shafts would. |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Thanks Buck Magnet.......Mtnarchery is where I got my 3D pro's as well. Can't beat their prices!!
|
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Coug... I've been 'testing' the Terminator Selects that JeffB sent me for a good six months now, putting them through the wringer. They still shoot broadheads just as well as the day I got them. You know how picky I am about arrows, and I've got no complaints about these Selects.
That is, other than the fact they're made in Korea. ;) |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Thanks Arthur, you are making my decision on buying new shafts harder. [&:] I have decided its between the Terminator Selects and the Easton Axis. I am sort of waiting it out though.....I have the feeling Easton will bring its Axis out in camo. with perhaps a tad more weight because of the coating. Heck, I may just try both!!:D

RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I have heard excuses for not hitting the vitals, but, Gee's I missed because my arrow wasn't straight enough has never been one of them.
|
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I've been using the terminator selects for nearly a year as well and they are still as good as the day I got them.
|
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Beman ICS Camo Hunter or the Matrix are the bomb, shoot perfectly with the Outback im waiting for. The Matrix shaft has an aluminum core and is specially bonded with the carbon outer. The aluminum core makes for a flush fit for points and nocks. Beman has lots of selection, not too bad on prices either, you get quality for your money. So that is what I have to say.

RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Spine consistancy is the most important variable in a quality arrow.
Straightness does help with getting broadheads to tune but spine is much more important. I also agree that an ACC is hard to beat but my gut feeling is that once the Easton Axis arrows get more well known, they will start to take over the hunting market. |
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Easton XX78 Super Slams are the straightest shafts for hunting there is to my knowledge.
|
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I shoot Gold Tips as well. Havent had a problem with them at all but Ive only shot them around 70 or 80 times but still are like new. They are very strong as far as carbon arrows go. I dont think there is a better arrow out there.
|
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
Another vote for the Gold Tips. I am shooting the "green" ones. Sorry don't have them next to me right now.
|
RE: Straightest Bowhunting Arrow?
I use the Easton A/C/C 3-60/340 for both 3-D and for hunting. They have been through the ringer and are still shooting straight. I like the uni bushing and G-nock system. I have managed to not break out the backs of the arrows with the unibushing system. With the uni-nocks I busted out all kinds of arrows. I swear by the A/C/C's for strength and durability. But they can be a little pricey. I have hunted with the terminators before and they seem to be a durable arrow also. I tried to break a terminator and it took an awful lot to break it. As far as straightness the Terminators are good also.
