Arthur, you know I can tune a bow or atleast I would hope you would know that after the many conversations we have had on this forum.

I agree that speed will make a huge difference in the shootability and tunability of a fixed head and yes an aluminum log;)will be more forgiving on a torqued shot or a high wind shot than a light carbon,BUT,it is still not going to completely make up for the head.

On a side note,my hunting setup was only around the mid 250's this year.I wouldn't call that blazing speed and I hotmelted my points in my arrows and used a broadhead tuner to align the inserts so I would say my arrows were as good as they could get.I also used helical feathers.Yes I hotmelted inserts in carbon.Tricky but with extreme care,it can be done but in no circumstance do you apply heat to the shaft, only to the insert.

I know you can tune a bow, TFOX, but it seemed to me like you were overstating the problem of getting fixed blade heads to tune.

Arthur

Well I really tried NOT to do that.I know fixed heads can tune and thought I pointed that out.I was just trying to point out the differences.

It has just become a pet peave of mine when people say that fixed heads fly JUST LIKE field points and that just isn't the case.Yes they may group with their field points but they will not in ALL conditions.

arkansasbowhunter, I don't know why you think the Vortex came out this year. I have used them 4 years and killed 14 deer with them. I don't know how long they were out before that. The reason I use them is when I started out bowhunting the guy at the pro shop recommended them and I stayed with them. I don't cut down anybody that uses any type of broadhead that they are happy with. I am just stating that I have had good luck with this one. Personally, I feel I have an advantage in that they open up so big and use the energy of the shot cutting instead of going deeper into the ground. With a bigger cut, there is a better chance of cutting vital organs, especially on a not so good shot.

Here is a pic of a doe I shot with one. The wound you see is an entrance wound on a quartering away shot. A very short tracking job.

Two ribs were completely cut through and the ribs outside of those were cut about half way throug. One of the blades was bent, but I straightened it out and used it again. I have had others bent so bad I had to replace them, but that is not a problem as far as I am concerned, they still did the job.

Yep. And you know my thoughts on the subject. It's a mistake to even try and make them fly like field points. If you're gonna shoot broadheads, then tune the bow to shoot broadheads. To heck with where field points hit. ;)

isatarak,

Without even realizing it,you are contibuting to the horror stories of mechanicals.Someone sees a picture like this and yes it is impressive ,but the inexperienced persons says WOW,I want to be able to do that.So his buddy that uses the heads tells him what he is using. The novice hunter goes to the local shop and purchases some of these heads. He goes out and shoots a deer with it.He doesn't even get half way through the deer and now he has lost the animal and all of a sudden it is the mechanicals fault. The problem was this hunter has a 27" draw and shoots 50#s.No where enough punch to push a head like this through an animal but even though the person is at fault,he blaims the equipment. He says you don't get good penetration with mechanicals, when in fact you can and do if the equipment is matched.

I am not trying to pick on you but this is exactly the type of thing that gives mechanicals a bad rep.The vortex with it's huge cutting diameter is an awesome head BUT it isn't designed for low energy bows.

Give me a break.

What do you mean give you a break, what kind of energy do you get out of your bow.

Do you feel that anyone can use these heads?

I really am not picking on you,You didn't tell anyone to go out and get these heads. It is the perception by some that think all heads and bows are equall and that just isn't the case.
