We all miss at one time or another.Strange things happen.Last year in Dec. I missed a deer at 12 yds.Couldn't figure out how???Then my daughter saw the poor branch bleeding with laughter that I shot instead. If bowhunting,or any hunting were easy, what fun would it be!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Oh how many I missed before I learnd how to shoot and tune a bow with broadheads!! I know the feeling but with time and practice it will all come together.

Nope, I didn't hunt until I was confident with the gear. I have missed a couple since, but killed a buck first season with the wheels and after taking two years off to learn to shoot the recurve, I took one first season with it too.

I seem to recall a few that eluded my best intended arrows, many moons ago as a 13 year old punk searching the woods for one of these &quot;big&quot; bucks I heard could be found somewhere in this state, I sent a few harmless arrows over the backs of unsuspecting whitetails. As mentioned, regardless of age, practice and experience will eventually give you that hard fought &quot;first&quot;.That's what's exciting about bowhunting is how fast it can go from a slap in the face to a slap on the back.Good luck

Dont get down on yourself Hoyt. When I first started bowhunting back in the days of the recurve I missed my first shot at a doe from 15 yards. Then later when I was using a compound I shot over the back of a big 8pt. at 20 yards. I guess I looked at the wrong sight pin. Just keep on trying and soon everything will come together.

I wouldnt get to down on yourself. I personaly have learned way more when I made a bad shot than I ever have when the shot was succsessful. When you make a bad shot you beat yourself up over it for a long time and that is what makes you make the right shot when the time comes. It has amazed me in the past when I made a shot and didnt notice a branch that was right in front of me and then after the miss you look at the shot you took and ask yuourself how could I of been so stupid. I guess that is one of the things that makes bowhunting so awsume.

I got the first deer I shot at ,but the first elk I shot at was 15 yards broadside and I didn,t even come close .He ran off to about 50 yards then stopped and looked back at me . I've missed others but will never forget the first one .

Hoythunter I was fortunate to harvest a spike on the very first time I went out with a bow. That was in 1981 and I didn&quot;t kill another until 1988. Since then I 've taken only 7 others 4 does and 3 bucks. Total of 9 deer since starting in 1981. Don't get discouraged sooner or later you will connect and when you do your in for the thrill of a life time. :)

Hoythunter! Missing is just as much of a hunting experience as making the perfect shot. I believe I've missed 2 nice bucks before I finally took a buck. This year was my first time drawing on a bull moose and when I released the arrow I saw it clip a branch. The feeling I got in my stomach was hollow. I know one thing though, I'll never quit until I can't draw the bow back anymore!

I missed the first deer I ever shot at, and then got one the following year. Misses aren't anything to be ashamed of, it happens to everyone!

No. I never drew back on any deer until the first one I took came into range. Before that, I was screwing up basic hunting skills and just not seeing deer. ie: spooking them on the way in, poor scent control, too much movement, etc. After my first two seasons, I ironed out most of these problems. My first deer walked in when I was out of the stand heading home. I was on the ground, out in the open but with decent background. The deer walked broadside right in front of me at a near perfect angle. Unfortunately, I hit it up high on the spine. This was right behind my house too so dragging it home was easy.

The next year, I shot at a spike on the last day of the bow season. The shot was low and went right under the boiler room. Finally found the arrow and was thankful for a clean miss.

The first day I went bowhunting, I was 11 yrs old. I could put put every arrow out of my 50lb bow in an apple at 20yds.
I shot every arrow in my quiver that first morning, 5 shots, and never cut a hair. I was on the side of a mountain, and though they were all passing 20 yds in front of me, they were almost the same distance down the hill. I shot over every one, not knowing any better. Funny now, but I was pretty upset back then. I also would panic and shoot at the whole deer, I think I missed 10 deer before my father sat in the stand with me, and coached me through the shot on a nice fat spike. I've now killed the past 18 deer I've shot at, over the past 4 seasons, knock on wood, and I think I had almost 10 in a row before that last miss.
P.S. That part about falling down the hill when drawing is too funny!

It's not a miss...it's called catch and release deer hunting. We all do it.
