Balance Point (How do you match up?)
How many of you know what your balance point is? If you don't and have an arrow handy you can figure it out by following the formula in this article
http://www.bowhunting.com/everythingarrows.asp?page=5 I'm at 13.24% FOC (front of center) which I guess by some standards may be a bit forward but I get good arrow flight and grouping so I'm not real worried. Just curious where I rank among everyone? |
RE: Balance Point (How do you match up?)
I only run at right around 10% but I'm happy with that.
Another handy FOC calculator can be found at www.bowjackson.com IMHO it is the greatest arrow weight, ballistics and FOC info on the net. |
RE: Balance Point (How do you match up?)
Doug,
Thanks for the link. According to bowjackson I'm at 12.3% I guess I'm not as front heavy as I thought. |
RE: Balance Point (How do you match up?)
Your arrows will actualy group better with field points with the higher weight foward(more stable.) as long as you are spined correctly. If the tip is too heavy this could increase your pile weight and actually underspine the arrow. I have studied Newtons laws and he states that an arrow flies its best at 10% weight foward. I used this because I figured that he probably knows a little more than me. The more weight foward the faster the arrow will drop. If you want to get even more into it. The drag co-efficient of the veins has alot to do with it also. I actually figured that if I went with a heavier arrow, with the correct drag co-efficent and 10% weight foward. I would still be effective on the 3-D range shooting at 275 fps, because I was minimizing my arrow drop. As for hunting this also helped as I can easily tune fixed blade broadheads to fly at these speeds with minimal effect of planing. The more the arrow is diving the more the effect the air will have on it.

I'm at 12.3% and happy with that!
Good Luck! |
RE: Balance Point (How do you match up?)
I'm near 13 and loving it. I have always shot 12-14 for over 30 years.

RE: Balance Point (How do you match up?)
I'm glad to hear those kudos for a 10% FOC. I just decided to change from 75G to 100G tips so that the light arrow wasn't so harsh on the bow. This gave me a FOC of 10.2% versus the 7.66% of the 75G setup.
Now I just need it to get warm enough to test. Fritz |
