Good place to set up ladder stand?
I just got a 15 ft. ladder stand for christmas this year (I guess last year) and am very anxious(sp) for the next bow season even though it just got over. I was wondering where is a good place to set up a 15 ft ladder stand? Against trees that are close together? Do I need good coverage? Very new to bowhunting. I just got my bow in October and I decided I shouldn't hunt this year and wait till next year so I could practice alot during the off season. Any help will be more than appriciated(sp). Thanks!

RE: Good place to set up ladder stand?
;) Mossberg; scout, scout, and then scout some more. I used to set mine on the leeward side of a ridge top. Approx. 3-8 yds down wind from top. If you really scout, you'll find that sweet spot. Set it up way prior to season. Then leave area alone, once you have cleared some shooting lanes. SECURE TO TREE WITH MAXIMUM CABLE & PADLOCK COMBO. Lost my last year to a middle of the night bandit.[X(]

RE: Good place to set up ladder stand?
d remember the sun comes up in the east , you don't want to be facing the sun .......learned the hard way , lol:D.....i scout , then i find where i want to hunt, set up , lock it, secure it goes without saying and i leave it alone, i try to have two different ways i can get to my stand because of the wind direction, sometimes it's just not possible......

RE: Good place to set up ladder stand?
At 15ft, you need to find the thickest possible place to put it. If you just lean it up against a big tree, you will be busted. However, if it is camoflauged good against a good tree, you will be fine. Over the years I've killed 3 deer(with a bow) from a 12 ft ladder stands, and all three were within 20 yds. It can be done, but stealth is the key.

RE: Good place to set up ladder stand?
o.k. this i am a master at. when you find your area look for a tree with alot or bushy branchs especially around the platform height. the more rough and scragly the better! i like pines because there leaves dont fall off like the oaks and maples but any single tree with natural break up helps much. stay away from open bare trees. if you can find a close group of trees i prefer it because it helps with the camo and for some reason makes me feel safer. i guess if i ever lost my balance while wearing a safety belt the tree next to you gives you something to grab in theory anyway. you can also go to a dollar store and get like 9 or to 15 foot tree garland. i run this up and down the ladder and around the platform. unless your stand has one i highly recommend a foam seat cushion because the metal will be a pain in the butt[:o] only trim out branchs the bare minimum. the most important thing though is deciding whether you are going to shoot out of it sitting down or standing up. my opinion is that most ladder stands are roomy enough to allow shooting sitting down. this means facing and or baiting a spot that you think the game will most likely come. if your righty i tend to favor setting up my ladder stand so i can shoot at my game on the left

RE: Good place to set up ladder stand?
also you need to practice and get your form down when shooting a bow while sitting. its not much to it but you should at least shoot from a fold up chair if your gonna do this. i like sitting because its less movement in the stand. during gun season i tend to stand a little too. and definatley consider how you set the stand up according to how the sun will rise or set depending on what time of the day you will hunt it more. so bring a compass and have fun!
