RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

It all depends on the nature of the tear. The end result depends on the surgery and good physical rehabilitation postoperatively. Commitment to rehab counts!

I don't have an answer for you but I have another question to add to the list. If someone was in the same situation as whackmaster's friend then would switching to an opposite hand bow (righty to lefty) make any bit of difference?

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

My dad is going in for this surgery in a couple of weeks. His is torn plus the muscle has pulled away. That is because he did it a year and a half ago and it tried to heal itself. The Dr. told him he would be out for 4 months. But dad said he would be out for 2 maybe. But that is just him, he has his own business and will go back to work no matter what the dr. says.

Always adding Deer Cam picts. Check often.

as a body building buff, I spend a lot of time in the gym. I tore mine a couple of years ago, did not get surgery but did a lot of strengthing exercizes, lay on your back, grab a weight (light) hold arm in a L shape and rotate shoulder from leg over head or stand in door way hold arm in L shape (upper arm horiz, lower arm vert) and try to push wall dwn while you are standing inside entryway. arm is kind of in the sme position as a chest fly but instead of working chest you rotate shoulder, this is the best thing to make the cuff muscles stronger to restist tears.. visit a sports med doctor too....

welcome to the crossbow lazyarcher. i'd say 75% of the guys using one on a permit in Pa got it because of those tears and the results of surgery. I wish you only the best in recovery but now you know how someother guys feel. And how they need to put up with the bashing they get for it here in Pa.

Thats a bummer man. Good luck. I have a friend that had the same problem and it took him about a year before he could shoot. He now shoots a lighter draw and does ok, but still can't shoot everyday.

Good luck, I know how you feel. Having stomach surgery on Wednesday and not looking forward to the layoff.

hope it doesnt come to limitatinos for your shooting.good luck, best advise I can give from someone that as they say "been there done that" DO WHAT THE DR. SAY'S NO MATTER WHAT. it is better to take longer now than having to do it again or worse, not being able to repair it.
a friend of mine had it just after deer season ended and he was ready to start shooting in mid summer and hunt the next season in Sept.

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

lazydude,

I tore the anterior labram in my right rotator cuff and had an arthroscopic procedure done three years ago. Spent six months in therapy. Most painful thing I have ever experienced......the therapy, that is. The surgery was cake, the recovery was killer. Best thing you could do, tho. My doc' said that I could have blown off the surgery and still led a semi-normal life......just no lifting, no sports, etc., etc. Could not even think of pulling my bow back for the first four months. Got tempted many times, but I'm glad that I stayed away. Could have really messed myself up. My right shoulder is now stronger and 'tighter' than my left. Amazing what they can do through such a tiny incision. Arthroscopic is the way to go. I've seen guys with old centipede-looking scars from back in the days when they'd open you up nice and wide.

Bottom line is, if you have a reputable surgeon and can stick to your therapy schedule without cheating, you can be back in the saddle (and back up to your peak draw weight) in about 5 or six months.

Good luck!

My father in law just had it done last year. His was a nasty tear and he's just now able to do a lot of things. He had it done by a top notch surgeon...and the doc told him that eventually he'll be back to about 90% of what he was. GOOD LUCK!

doctors only want your $ not what is right for you. as a avid whitewater kayaker ive seen dozens of rotator cuff problems. the best solution is to start a physical therapy program with no surgery. ive have personally come back with no surgery but lots of physical therapy and im as good as new. ive also seen many surgery peopler who are not 80 % what they once were. once your cut open how can you ever be the same or better? i know every injury is different but id get a second and third opionion before id let someone cut on me. they told me id be 100% after my acl tear . ha not even close. if i had to do it again id of done rehabit instead of surgery.

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

There's a bit more to my story, and nidahoscott made me remember it.

When I first got injured, I described for my doctor the pain and 'slipping' sensation I was feeling. He immediately had me go to physical therapy to see if strengthening the muscle group around the rotator cuff would tighten things up. Did it for 2 1/2 months with little improvement. See, the thing is, most medical plans will not spring for a costly MRI right off the bat. They'll suggest therapy or, worse yet, cortisone injections. Once I'd gone the PT route with little or no success, an MRI was approved and the imaging showed conclusively what had occured nearly 3 months prior. The tear to my labram looked like a little piece of spaghetti that needed to be reattached in order to keep the humerus from slipping out of it's socket, so to speak.

Without an MRI, it's hard to say what's going on inside your shoulder. Here's a good link with lots of info:

I just injured mine in September!
My MRI showed a complete tear
I went thru phyical therapy, its better but
still can't shoot a bow! (tried the lightest bows available)
I had 3 weeks vacation during bow season & couldn't hunt, that hurt.

Surgery is the answer for me & the Doc. says it'll be better but not to expect 100%

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

Never had mine worked on but have worked on lots of them. I work in surgery with 7 Ortho Dr.s. Just remember:
NO REPAIR IS GOOD AS NEW!
Small tears get larger in time,
If you could not hit it before getting it fixed does not mean you will hit it afterward (does give you an excuse),
Surgery is not a problem, The work comes afterward,
If you are not going to do the PT. dont get it worked on! No matter how good the repair its up to you on how well it will work.
If there is a will there is a way to tear it again if you do not take care of it.
Last but not least Its up to you on what you want done, BUT, you need to do somthing Pt, Surgery,.... injurys not taken care of tend to get worse and can do it quickly.
Take care and good luck,
Rick

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

I'm 42 and have 4 damaged limbs: Partial rotator cuff tear in right shoulder. Full tear in left. Full torn ACL in right knee. Partial torn cartiledge in right knee. The only operation I have had was the right knee cartiledge. It is also the only limb that chronically gives me problems. All the other bad joints I was able to greatly strengthen with mostly self-rehab.

I still mostly play competetive basketball to stay in shape. I tone it down a lot from my early days, but still compete well for my age. I warm up my shoulder for archery now, and have gone down in draw weight from 70 to 64. Sometimes my right shoulder has some pain. I just take it easy and hope it lasts as long as possible. Would hate to use a crossbow but someday probably will have to.

lazyarcher, Forgot to mention I'd advise strengthening first, and surgery as last resort. Opinion based on my injuries. I have 2 doctors and 1 nurse in my family and they confirmed the way I chose to deal with my conditions.

I am typing this with an ice pack tied to my shoulder.I injured my shoulder last summer shooting and put it off till after hunting season.I am into my fourth week of therapy now and it is doing nothing to help. They say it is inflamation but I think it is worse.Constant ache in my upper arm, some days it is ok till I use it for something then it is sore for a couple days. Can barley lift my arm to comb my hair some days.Got two more days of therapy then back to the doctor to see what to do next.

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

I know alot of you are american, but have you heard of Donivan Bailey, our 100Metre sprinter the broke the world record in the 96 olympics, well he tore his achilies tendon, in 98 I beleive it was, and he did recover to sprint again. This is something that will take rehabilitation. My sister is a massage therapist and she said the reason, tears happen like this, is the stretched rope affect. Imagine having so much tension in a rope that the strands start to weaken, you keep pulling and pulling, without allowing the muscle to relax and then it gets torn. This is the reason it is a good idea to get massage therapy every once in a while. This brings hormones and oxegen to the muscles allowing them to settle into a more relaxed state. Be very careful and listen to your doctor very well before getting back to shooting. Allow the muscle surgery to fully heal and you should be fine. Good luck, and eat alot of steak to build up the protein levels in your body that create muscle. Good shooting.

Frank, to answer your question, look in the PA field hunter state championship records. One man won it 5 times. The last two were back to back, one righty, the next lefty. He had to switch for that very reason.

RE: Torn Rotator Cuff???

I partially tore my right shoulder's rotator cuff in High School during football. I wasn't into bowhunting at the time but it absolutely killed and I could barely put my shirt on. However, I did rehab instead of surgery and only feel it tighten during damp weather. I'm always careful and try to stretch a little before shooting or anything physical.

Surgery is a good permanent solution but I htink that the recovery time is quite lengthy so get it done NOW for the fall.
