Whats Wrong With Hunting?
 

Im currently in my JR year at Capital High School, its a pretty good sized school, but im just about the only archer and hunter there, besides a couple of rifle hunters...but theres on thing i cant stand, when in class the teachers ask what we did over the weekend, and i say for example last years season, "i shot my first spike elk with my compound" and the other kids in class (i live in idaho by the way) say "ooooh, thats so sad, the poor little animal, YOU SHOT A BAMBI!" (thanks to Walt Disneys Bambi, Probably the biggest movie that mocks and stereotypes hunters) It just upsets me when they suck down double quarter pounders from mcdonalds, and complain about hunters, when were the ones out in the woods walking for miles up and down mountains, bustin our a$$ for a bowkill and the rewarding feelings you experience while being outdoors, everything from the terrain, mountains, streams, tall trees, and watching and hunting the most amazing animals, ELK. When the burger they are sucking down came from a cow who was herded through a gate, shot in the head with a .22, cut up and shipped out...Whats so wrong about a man working hard to fill his freezer?

Nothings wrong with hunting but it is tough dealing with people that dont understand. But everybody is different and you also need to realize that. If they dont agree with it then oh well. To each thier own you know. Just be better then them and dont get into battle of the wits with people like that because they have their veiws and we have ours and neither will win.

And as far as the cows. Cows have become socially exceptible to harvest and eat just like veggies. They dont look at beef as being "hunted" but harvested and that is a big differance to alot of people. Now if Cows ran wild and the only way that you could have beef was to "Hunt" them then you would be getting the same people saying the same crap about hunting cows.

:) Start a school hunting club. 1st meeting, invite anyone interested pro/con. Have all your facts straight and make a video or slide presentation as to the benefits of herd thinning, good conservation etc.. Invite a guest speaker or two. Your local DEC and or Cooperative extension are good sources.

I hear ya![:@] Kids at my school mock and make fun of me, but I don't give a crap because bowhunting is something I am good at, and like to do. People don't understand the ethics of hunting, just like Hunters and Farmers working to save world hunger stuff. Don't ever think you have to shoot a "Monster bull or buck" to be successful. Anything you take with your bow should be a trophy.;):D Don't let anybody get you down, and good luck;):)

I believe I will pass that on to my 14yo nephew who has a similar problem at his highschool.

I grew up in a rural community and never had a problem while in school. I lived in Chicago for about 7 years and the people I worked with and friends I met did not agree with hunting. I tried to diplomatic and often discussed hunting with people who didnt agree. after a while people undestood what responsible hunting is. Communication and education of people who are not familiar with hunting is key in helping them understand that we are not a bunch of blood thirsty killers, as time went by I would bring deer jerkey to work and for a few people invited them over for deer steaks on the grill.

I do not agree with hunting. You are blood thirsty people. T roy, if I remember correctly you give out deer steaks to uneducated hunters (hint hint). LOL I really like hunting and am not making fun of my fellow hunters.;) So uh how bout them steaks.:D

I think all of us hunters know that if your not a hunter your easily influenced on ideas that , with a little research, we may find out hunting is a GREAT SPORT and a great way to enjoy the outdoors. I personally love the outdoors and a harvest is just gravy !!!!!!!! :)

A harvest with gravy is more like it. ;) I've been hunting several times and have only came back a couple times with game. To me having the freedom to go out in the woods is a great reward. Like NMArcher said, "A harvest is just gravy."

I am currentlya Freshman in highschool and i dont think that anything is wrong with hunting other than poaching.....then again poaching isnt hunting so whatever. i HATE it when people say that it takes no skill to hunt an animal. i tell em' to get out in the woods for hours with a gun, a bottle of water, a rifle and stalk and animal down for hours and still have enough energy make a succesfull shot. They also say "how can you do such a cruel thing to such a sweet, innocent creature?" i just get so aggrivated that i just want to lay them flat on the pavement! i also mention the whole cow "issue" and how killing cows is any different than killing a deer and they say " well....... thats different!" this is kind of funny but it ANNOYES me SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much but when 1 girl sees me all she does ever does is screams at the top of her lungs " animal killer!" even if it is during class and she sees me as she walks down the hall way. i would want to start that whole hunting club at school but im affraid that there wouldnt be enough students to join up. i mean i have some older friends that would join but not that many of them hunt.

BY THE WAY DOES ANYBODY KNOW A CHEAP, GOOD QUALITY BOW THAT I SHOULD PURCHASE? BECAUSE I WANT TO START BOW HUNTING.

REMEMBER, WHEN YOU HUNT, HUNT BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO AND BECAUSE YOU WANT THE MEAT, DONT HUNT JUST TO KILL, THATS JUST WRONG.

I hunted extremely hard and still did't fill my freezer! But covered alot of beautiful country, and breathed alot of good mountain air, worth every effort!
I'm sure going to be hungry when I come out of hibernation though so them hamburgers will have to do till next hunting season. :D

Man I feel sorry for ya. I'm also a JR and I've never encountered any of this. I have heard some girl say don't shoot bambi when the teacher asked who was going to be gone for opening day, but she was just kidding. All my friends hunt and whenever we are talking about it other kids usually chime in because they are curious about it. If this happens I try to stay away from saying any gorry(sp*) things so they don't think hunting is bad. If anybody ever question me I think I'm thourougly prepared to debate. I know my facts and I think I could tell it to them straight. O yeah next time you guys pull the "well hunting is the same as killing cows" and they say "but thats different" say... "actually your right, it is different. When hunting the animal has a chance, cows have no chance and are born to be slaughtered."

i get the same kinda stuff at my highschool. they say stuff like how can u eat it and stuff like that. killing a deer whether it is by bow or gun, is a lot more ethical than just shooting a cow or pig in a pen with no chance for survival. i dont understand the way some people think

thats what im saying, i wish more people could look at hunting with an open mind...huntings been a way of life for hundreds of years, its a beautiful thing and animal actavists frustrate me when they try to shut it down, (i know im straying from the original thread) but thats just the way i feel.

I have that same problem, but the kids that do hunt do it just to kill something. They don't enjoy the time in the woods.

The Archery in Schools program that was originated here in Kentucky is doing a lot to change the view of a lot of parents and students as to just what archery means to bowhunting.
You should see some of the kids shooting in the class at school, cheerleaders
or former drop outs are actually adapting to a sport that brings them in a circle back to the hunting desires of most archers.
If your state hasn't started the program then work to get it done, many states have sent their teachers to receive training and see the start of a program that really developes the mind and body of those students.[8D]

;) Thanks for the complement Archer 18. Another suggestion; poke around and ? some teachers. Many of them are quite liberal in their thought patterns. However, there is usually some more conservative {closet hunters] that just don't go around talking about hunting because like yourself they feel that their associates will ostrasize them. ? them one on one, in private. Tell them your idea about possibly starting a club. Show them an outline about your clubs objectives, membership potential, activities, etc.. Most school clubs require that a teacher or two be involved for obvious reasons. If you can line up a mentor or two then you can, with their help and guidance, further pursue convincing the administration that you have a viable after school program for kids to become involved. They would want a well planned presentation. If you get to this stage of forming a club I would suggest you emphasize to them the following: 1] Adults are always complaining that the youth of today does not become involved. 2] many students are looking for interesting after-school programs. 3] convince them that conservation and the use of field trips will help students understand more about the various problems that society faces, up front and personal, not just classroom theorizing. I could go on but I'm sure you get my drift. If you want something. Pursue it and don't let your trepidation or fears stop you from attaining your goal. GOOD LUCK MY YOUNG HUNTING FRIEND!
