RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
In a couple years, my goal is to buy about 10-15 acres. I would like to be close to the city I live in, so land is somewhat expensive. I want to build a house on it, 100 yards off the road and have woods all around. I would put out (2) 1 acre food plots. One on the back portion of the property where I could hunt on or around and one about 35 yards behind my house which would be a viewing plot only, overtime the deer would accept this as somewhat of a sanctuary, provided you stay off their bedding areas and don't spook them while they are in the plot. It would be awesome to watch deer feeding behind your house while eating at your kitchen table.

RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
My most productive stand is on a plot of land that is less that 3 acres. We own this small piece which used to be abutted but other parcels of land. Over the last 10 years about 15 houses have been built(urban sprawl). My honey hole still pulls deer in but now I have to deal with dogs and dog owners who don't care to control the pets[:@]. With all the development going on the deer have no choice but to pass thru my funnel. The only thing I have to do to manage my land is keep my neighbors out and keep in contact with animal control to keep their pets out.

RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
I have a place that is only 12 acres I have hunted for 3 years and killed 2 bucks off of it. As far as managing it goes it is not my land so there is nothing I can really do as far as QDM.

RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
I hunt two farms that have 15 acres of timber with a couple open areas in the middle of timber that is grown up in tall weeds, ideal bedding for deer. And I recently got permition to hunt a 40 acre tract that is about 20 acres of timber with 3 field throughout. There are tree lines separating all three. The fields are planted in wheat right now. The deer are hitting it hard too. I saw 10 last night. A small 6 ptr, a 2.5 yr old 8, and mature 10 that would go clost to 140. One of the other farms I hunt is part of a mile long line of trees with fields all around and tree lines that run on all sides of the fields. In all there is about 100 total acres of timber. I've had my trail cam out three different times and have pictures of 7 different bucks. All the way from a button to a huge 10 ptr with split g-2's, and another 10 that would go close to 150, an 8 that would score 130-140. And there are alot of good looking 1.5-2.5 yr. old deer. The other section of the timber is only hunted by one old man and he can't hit the broad side of a barn, plus he only gun hunts so I have the woods to myself for bow season. I'm planning on planting a food plot on the side of the property that I hunt to hopefully hold more deer on that side.

RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
WeVe had a 40 acre place for about 20 years. Two ponds and an A-frame cabin are on it. A big power line right-of-way plows right through it, which has actually always helped the hunting.
We have three small food plots and two feeders that, if kept up well, will keep game on the property all year. Also, it's a hunting and fishing only kind of place. We don't go driving trucks all over the woods or go shooting rifles for no good reason, so the place stays pretty quiet. A horse farm is behind it, so their activity probably helps us out a little as well. With this management, three bucks were taken off this plot in the '03 season, and many other untaken opportunities passed by us out there. Great for waterfowl and turkey, too. |
RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
My self and a couple of friends hunt on two three acre tracts that are in a subdvision where
all lots are 3-4 acres. So far we have taken out a 6pt, small 8pt, and I took this 11pt. We have also seen a mature 10pt and a 9pt that would go close to 140. This is an awesome place but someone is wanting to build a new subdivision behind us so this may be the last year we get to see this kind of activity but it has been an incredible year so far. We still have 5 days left! ![]() |
RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
YUP.... one of the best pieces of land I ever hunted was 25 acres... long and narrow. Right now Len and I hunt 3 pieces that are 5 acres, one that's around 100 and one that's 265. We've taken an awful lot of deer off the 5 acre chunks. They're just passing through... but they do it every day twice a day.

RE: Anyone hunt on that is 40 acres or less?
We hunted 50 acres this year(about half hay field and half hard wood forest) here in Indiana and shot two bucks, one was a decent 10 that would have made P&Y if it was shot with a bow and the other was a half rack 5 pointer. But with a place like it was it was extremely easy to over hunt.
