I agree that the tail flicking is a sure sign of being gut shot .The tail shaking is a give away. Good luck on your retreavel.

RE: shot one, need advice
You definitely gut shot it and made the correct choice to stay out of there. Sometimes you just don't get the classic stomach material on the arrow, but all other sighns pointed that way. You probably caught some liver as well. If you don't hit square thru the liver that deer can live a long time. (4-8 hours) Good luck finding her, I'm sure you will.

You must be busy dragging her out eh?

RE: shot one, need advice
sorry for the delay in posting this but i was busy today. i found her at 830 this morning. she went about 150 yards from where i shot her. it wasn't a bad shot that i took. i wouldn't hesitate on taking the same shot again, if anything i should have shot like 2 inches more to the left but the exit wound was on the bottom side of her. entry hole was right in the middle of her body, vertically that is. was only a 10 yard shot so the angle was severe.
i got out this morning at first light and started tracking with my fiance. a tip for you guys, bring a woman with you...they pick up on the smallest specks of blood. the blood trail started out good then got weaker and weaker. my fiance was finding all the real small specks of blood. oh it didn't help that we were tracking through a swamp and it was sleeting on us. anyway we are down to just small drops every 10 yards then it stopped. i then just started walking around, going back and forth while she was searching for more sign. i stumbled on my doe not to much longer after that. i guess we were out there for over an hour so not too bad. she was a nice sized doe, about 100lbs. the shot caught some lungs, liver and opened up the stomach on the exit hole. thanks for all the support guys. kevin oh, i was watching the doe and she was about 40-45 yards away after i shot but she was walking through real thick briars...no shot opportunity. |
RE: shot one, need advice
Well all right on the tracking job. I knew women were good for more than just ironing shirts:D;) I kinda new the reason for not taking a second shot but just wanted it verified. Enjoy those steaks and maybe bring your fiance' on the hunt also.:). Once again well done

RE: shot one, need advice
Congrats on your deer. Just wanted to add for any future questionable shots, not that you will have, but it's something I do myself. Other than looking at the color of the blood, I would 'smell' the arrow for a gut shot---usually that scent is easily detected, and if present, will confirm a gut penetration.

RE: shot one, need advice
i just talked to a friend and he said when shooting at a deer that close, to shoot a lot higher up on the deer. my entry hole was right in the middle, should have been upper quarter of deer.
