where do u shoot

what do u aim for when shooting a deer? just the center of the vitals or a specific organ such as the lungs. i am for the lungs whenever possible because if they cant breathe, they cant live

I TRY TO HIT THE DOUBLE LUNGER ,BUT IF I DON'T HIT THE LUNGS IT WILL HIT CLOSE TO THE HEART OR LIVER.VITAL SHOTS ARE FOR ME.

Definitly the heart lungs area without question.

I aim right behind the shoulder on broadside shots. For the opposite shoulder on quartering away.

I always try to take out the lungs. In fact if I don't have a good high percentage lung shot, I don't shoot!

Good Luck!

Thats where its all at. Take a look at his track record. You can't argue, he kills monsters all the time. Take out the lungs or let it walk!!!

double lungers are sweet shots.;)

RE: where do u shoot

I aim low in the heart-lung area to allow for a deer jumping the string. If he doesn't squat, I still hit the heart/lungs. If he does, I catch him in the middle to high lungs. Each is lethal and quick.

Good luck!

I aim right about here.... depending on how high and how far away the deer is. I'd wait on this one to move that leg forward and turn a little more broadside. Maybe just a tiny bit above my mark.

I aim right behind the point of the shoulder like the pic's got it marked, but I'd wait to shoot until the near side leg is forward instead of back.

The heart.

Here is three pics from the three I killed this year. All three are different hearts from three different deer.

I agree 100%. I think many guys take shots they shouldn't based on stories I hear on this forum of wounded deer and from what I have seen at the meet processor(deer hanging in the freezer.) If I don't have a shot 25 yards or less, broadside, where I can get a good double lung shot, I let em walk. Lord willing, he'll back another day!

Excellent pic Davidmill.

How did you get that deer to stand still like that while you painted him david? I like to shoot right where david pointed out. Better lower than the equator than higher IMO. I've been trying to shake my buddy of his placement selection. He claims to shoot higher than I do. He's seen too many diagrams and 3D targets that aren't exactly accurate in my opinion. You have to remember it's not a drawing. It's a living animal and there's some weight sagging those organs down when it's walking around.

Davidmil,
I think hunting from the ground, your red dot is perfect. However, hunting from a tree stand 20-22 feet up, depending on how far out the deer is, thus a steeper angle, shot placement would be slightly higher. Very good illustration though.

RE: where do u shoot

The spot Davidmil showed you. If its within 25 yards I shoot just above and just behind the elbow. I'll shoot out to 40 but then shoot to center chest.[8D]

DOUBLE LUNG, OR HEART, MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE IS THE HEART SHOT.

RE: where do u shoot

I agree Swampdog, that's why I stated something about depending on how high etc. The higher the angle the higher the aim point. This was one of my yard deer. I was so excited to see him at midday in the lawn I didn't hold the camera still. I have on a couple occasions with really nervous or alert deer aimed right at the belly line behind the shoulder. If the deer didn't drop I miss or get a graze across the bottom. Every time I thought the unorthodox shot was called for I got center plum hits. Just like a Hollywood script. I said they'd drop and they did.:D The spot I marked is WHAT I want to hit, not always where I aim. And again, the higher up you go the spot should move, unless the deer is out there at 30-40 yards and then it becomes more like shooting from ground level. When the deer gets to 30 plus I tend to aim more center of mass to give me more margin for range estimation errors.

I have some of those too Dan B.;)

RE: where do u shoot

I prefer the walkin away at around 10-20 yards and the shot directly to where the neck and skull meet, definitly very deadly, if they don't present that shot I guess a double lung will work. Hit them in the lungs and take the air out of them, that is the best way to go.

RE: where do u shoot

If I can get a good heart shot I will take it. I f not double lungs.

What I want to know is how did that little quad perform pulling out those 3 deer DAN B:D?

I agree aim for boiler room, might as well give yourself the highest % shot. I prefer lower double lung like the picture shows puts more on the ground and they don't go as far.

RE: where do u shoot

Well, when I shoot at a deer I aim for the exit point. For me it is where David has his red mark, only on the far side of the deer. When I have the sight pin in a straight line to that far exit point the entrance point is set. What I want is for the arrow to enter the deer, travel through the vitals and exit right around that far front leg. The lower the exit hole, the easier the blood can drain.

the entrance point changes with each step and turn the deer may take, but my exit point is always the same...

I have had a lot of success useing this method. You will to if you can understand what I am talking about and then learn to do it.

Well, I aim for their foot man. If ya break there foot then they can't walk no more! LOL

I aim for the lungs and have learned to beware of that big ole shoulder blade.

As tight to the shoulder as I can without getting into the bone. I also shoot for the bottom 1/3 of the body.

RE: where do u shoot

W.I.M.P.,
That is my favorite shot, the back of the head execution style. In all honesty the best shot and only shot should be to take the air out of their sails. This year I did shoot a doe though about a week and a half ago at around 5-8 yards as she walked under my stand and away from me. I was up around 24 feet and I hit her square in the back of the head, the most humane and quick kill the animal could get. However this is a shot that should never be taken, and I am not proud to say I released an arrow. But most importantly in your shots you must be confident, and have lots and lots of practice under your belt.

Aim double lung, can't lose situation, pleanty of other vitals right there in case you are off some. I really can't see why anyone would want to aim any where else then just behind the shoulder a bit.

right above the heart.:D

RE: where do u shoot

Broadside, go for the center 12 ring on a Mckenzie 3D target. If the animal is quartering, you imagine the same spot in the center of the animal instead of the side. Best percentage shot there is. Allows the widest possible margin for error in any given direction.;)
