RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
This subject causes much controversy. If you really want to know what people think on this go to the deer hunting forum and use the search feature at the bottom of the page. Type in neck shot. You will have all the replys you want on this subject.

Shadow
Not to argue or nitpick but why yes with a gun and no with a bow?? What decisivly draws the line for you on the neck shot? my vote is no neck shot regardless. JMO. I do not condem any one who does, just isn't my style. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
The way I know it is that a neck shot if hit just right (Lucky) you will drop them but there is alot of room there in the neck that and not much of the spine or arterys so it is easy to miss. I dont know why but I seem to hit the neck often. My first and second bucks with a rifle were on perpose cause it was the only shot. My elk this year with my bow, she jumped the string and turned a little and I was shaking a bit and I got her square in the spine of the neck (Dropped her like a stone) Then on my buck this year I am not sure excatly what I did wrong but I some how got him in the neck aslo (dropped him also) very lucky shot but I have spent the last month trying to figure this one out my sights were fine so it must have been me. I guess god said I was shooting necks this year. lol
But on the other hand those two shots could have gone very bad but I was just very lucky this year and I dont like lucky shots cause there is always bad luck. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
this is the type of question that gets the antis boiling.
why shoot the neck when you can shoot the vitals? neck shooters get us in trouble. the boiler room is ALWAYS the best bet. J |

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
davidmil,
Nice restraint! :D |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I stick with the lung shot. There is too good of a chance that something will go wrong hitting a deer in the neck. I have seen several deer be lost due to poor neck shots.;)
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
Never ever shoot a deer in the neck with a bow. I have seen several deer shot this way and none have been recoverd at our camp. 1 was on purpose, the other 2 were bad shooting. In all three cases blood trail was good for a while, then nothing. all deer got away.
With a rifle I don't have a problem with it. In fact I made a 40 yard shot on a deer this year, hitting it in the neck, just below the chin. with an accurate scoped rifle this shot is deadly, with a bow it's asking for trouble. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
;) 2004 must start better than this friends. Please refrain from neck shots. You are just asking for hearache.

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I TOOK A DEER THIS YEAR IN THE NECK WITH MY .50 cal MUZZLELOADER, IT DROPPED IN IT'S TRACKS.

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
So many of you guys are not seeing the big picture.
1.Neck shots are a poor choice due to the small area where the shot is lethal. 2.Neck shots are a poor choice due to the high number of wounded and not recovered game animals. 3.Neck shots are considered less than humane by antis and looked down upon by ethical and responsible hunters. 4.Why shoot at something that small when a lethal area 20 times as big will likely present itself. If it doesn't, what is the big deal, you'll have another chance. 5.Neck shots are like shooting a deer in the hind leg(femoral artery), or mouth or even the anus(Texas heart shot). All kill quickly, but the the odds of crippling the deer or causing long suffering are extremely high. We, as hunters, must do the right thing and make good shot choices. Neck shots are not good shot choices. |

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
With a gun yes, with a Bow NOWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I would not with a gun or bow, I like a nice humane lung shot or heart shot, even a spine shot is better than a neck shot, if that is the only shot you have, then yes, but not if the fricken deer is broadside! Some people take bucks throguh the esophogus if it is the only shot that it is offered, and some like in the Beatty bucks case was taken just under the jaw!

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
ditto to davidmil
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
For those of you that think it is ok to shoot a deer in the neck, whether by bow or gun, please stay out of the woods until you can find an ethical hunter in your area to teach you how to hunt properly.
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
If I don't have a good shot at the lungs, I won't shoot! Although a neck shot could put the deer down right away, there is such a small area to hit and in such a high area of movement. Asking fo trouble, bow or gun!
Good Luck! |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I think that the shock of a bullet going through the neck sends enough shock to shatter a main artery or the spine, So a dead on shot is not necessary like it would be with a bow. I'm sure you could just nick the animal and it would get away but you can do that aiming for the vitals too. I have never taken a neck shot but I have heard if you shoot them right where the base of the neck meats the shoulder that the shock will send them straight down even if it is not a direct hit to the spine. A guy on another forum said he tried this once and he has shot every deer this way since then and every one of them dropped in its tracks and didn't move another muscle.
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I have to agree neck shot's are low percentage recoveries if you don't hit them right .I have taken 2 deer with neck shot's and dropped them on the spot .I only took these shot's because they were close about 20yrds. I wouldn't take this shot with a bow at all .

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
With a bow a neck shot is out of the question.
With a gun, unless you are know the anatomy of the neck VERY well and you know you are going to hit right where you are aiming and the deer is perfectly still, it is a bad shot! |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
With a bow, no way!!!!!!!!!
With a gun, it is lethal and ethical. I don't know where you guys are getting this "lost deer" talk. Honestly. I have shot two deer in the neck with my rifle and both dropped in their tracks. I know I will get the reply "you were lucky"..... no I wasn't. A bullet, when it hits a deer, explodes and sends a shock wave through the deer. That explosion is enough to break a neck bone! My grandfather is a firm believer in neck shots and guess how many deer I have seen him loose!!!!!!!! None. It is easier to say "A neck shot isn't good and ethical" than to stand up and agree that a neck shot is lethal shot. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
Ok I'll probably get hammered for this but here is my take.
I only shoot does with a gun and all have been neck shots. I practice shooting and am confident in shot placement. All animals dropped in their tracks. Seems to me that is a quick and ethical method. I've seen a number of deer shot in the boiler room and run off to eventually expire. The time to expire was longer than the neck shot. As "the nuge15" mentioned the shock of the bullet causes arteries to explode. Not sure how the Anti's can gain anymore ammunition on that then they already think they have on hunters. Archery neck shot not a chance folks. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
With a bow..........no.
With a gun.........yes. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
with a gun hell yes, happens all the time
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
Bow no. if u are useing a gun it will drop em right where they stand.
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I should make something clear, yes I will take a neck shot with a Rifle, but only if it's the only shot that's likely to be offerd. If I am able to go for the chest area that's where I will shoot.
|
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I need to make something clear. I will take a neck shot with an an accurate scoped rifle, but only if it is likely to be the only shot presented. If I have a chance at a heart/lung shot I will take it. Like I said before with a bow it's out of the question.

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
as the rest of the guys said if ya can place your shots why not neck shoot them, ya save alot of meat .:)

RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
I've had a change of heart. I've said before that I'd take a neck shot if that was all I had. the 8pt i killed this year I shot in the neck. not on purpose, I was aiming for a doubble lunger. the reason I pulled off was i had to scoot down in my seat to make the shot. there was a beech limb between me and the buck. not so two days before when I passed on a 6pt standin in the exact same place as the 8pt. it had rained and the limb was saggin causin it to be in the way.
I was confident i could make the 35 yd shot, I had practiced that distance on a 3D target the day before. but having to scoot down in my seat, with me in that awkward position, I just pulled to the right and hit the deer in the center of the neck. but didn't know where I had hit him till I found him alive 2 hours later. not because he ran a long way, he wadn't over 60 yds from my stand. but 30 minutes after I heard him fall, I started trackin him. I still cannot understand how he ran that far bleedin like he was. there was blood that had squirted out both sides, on the ground and bushes and everwhere else. but I heard him try to get up when I got close to him, so I just backed out to my stand, called my wife and told her to get help for draggin the deer, and to bring some lights. by the time they got over there it was dark, and had been almost 2 hours since i shot the deer. we tracked him through a little thicket and to my surprise, after all the blood that deer had lost, he jumped up, and went about 10yds and fell again. I found out later I had grazed his spine, that's why he couldn't stay on his feet right after I shot him. I had to put another arrow in him, and hit him too far back. ever tried to shoot a bow in the woods at night? ain't easy. shot two more arrows, and finally the deer died. that was a sad sight to see that deer tryin to hold his head up, still suffering after 2 hours. :( I've learned my lesson on neck shots. although I didn't purposely shoot for his neck, I saw first hand what can happen when you hit the neck, and I'll never take a neck shot on purpose, never. and I don't agree that it's ok to shoot the neck with a rifle, but not a bow. couldn't the same thing happen with a rifle?[:'(] yea, yea, I remember our little neck shot disscusion not long ago, so go ahead and say it. I TOLD YOU SO! [X(] |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
What a rough way to learn your lesson.
Thanks for sharing your story, it took a big man to do so. I have a great deal of respect for that. |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
bogobble,
I feel for you man and that really stinks. But, you have to see the point about a rifle. A bow slices meat open and causes blood loss, that is how it kills an animal!!!! A rifle will explode on impact and it uses shock to kill. Like I said above, that shock is enough to snap bones, shatter bones and punch huge holes through things! I would never aim for the bottom portion of the neck, but, if I am rifle hunting, a deer is standing at a close distance, and I have a good rest, I will put a bullet in the top portion of his neck. My .280 can put a serious hurtin on a deer and will put a big hole through a deers neck!!!!! My best friend had the same situation as you this year except he was using a rifle. We were hunting together and a doe came out. There were a couple branches between the deer and us and he put his .308 right behind the shoulder and shot. The deer dropped instantly! We instantly got up and went over and the deer was entirely dead, we poked its eye with the gun barrel and it didn't blink. Well, we then looked and couldn't find a hole in the chest area. Well, we looked for awhile and found the hole a few inches down from the jaw bone. When we skinned it out, it put a dime sized hole on the way in and a half dollar sized hole on the way out! Not to mention the pieces of bone that it exploded that went through the neck, which cut open vanes! I have only seen one deer in my life that was lost to a "neck" shot and I wouldn't even call it that. The deer had a bullet hole at the top of the brisket region, and I am not sure that somebody didn't just shoot the buck and leave it as the buck was tiny! I have seen some great shots and some terrible shots come from guys who I have met in the woods and these rifles they were using killed these deer. I guess it is about knowing your personal limits. I won't criticize anyone about shot placement "unless it is blatantly retarded (such as the guy on another board who shot a deer in the head with his bow to "see if he could do it"), but, I also want people to respect my personal limit! [8D] |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
With a bow NO !
With a gun HELL YES ! It is without a doubt the most humane way to shoot a deer. Instantaneous death, and no tracking. Even a poorly shot animal will drop, just from the impact. It would have to be a graze for it not to kill and then the deer would only live anyways. The meat will always taste better if the animal is not put under any stress before it's final demise. With a scoped high powered rifle it's a very good shot. If you are not that good or confident in your gun I would say no then. I can take deer in the head out to 200 yds if I choose. I took a 200 lb hog last year at a distance of 240 yds with a shot to his head. Heres two bucks I took this year with drop'em in there tracks shots. These deer were dead before they even hit the ground. 2 bucks link |
RE: does any1 shoot deer in the neck?
my father in law always aims for the neck because "I don't want to ruin the meat". His wife has to borrow venison from us each year for 5 of the last 6 because despite seeing lots of deer he never gets one shooting them in the neck. "Guns out of sight he says, but he had no problem killing a 35 lb bobcat this year with the same gun:)
