Cold weather boot ?
 

Hi all,I'm looking to buy a new pair of cold weather boots for next year and would like some input.Here's what I'm looking for,I will be useing these boots for treestand hunting only.I hunt in ohio and it can get pretty cold here in Dec and Jan so I'm looking at a boot with at least 800 grams of thinsulate.I don't want a all rubber boot or a pack boot.Here are the boots I'm thinking about,any pros or cons would be greatly appreciated also if you know of another boot that I might be interested in please let me know.Thanks very much. Dave

1.)Rocky BearClaw2 with a 1000 grams of thinsulate.
2.)LaCrosse Buckmaster with 800 grams of thinsulate.
3.)Cabelas Bruin's 1600 grams of thinsulate
4.)LaCrosse Timbermaster 800 grams of thinsulate.
5.)Cabelas Tracker Dry-Plus 1000 grams of thinsulate.

I think you might want a little more than 800 grams of insulation. I use Lacrosse expiditionary(spelling)pack boots. I love them and so far my feet havent got cold yet.

I use the rocky bearclaw 2 with the 1000 grams of thinsulate.

well I have 2 not on your lists. First off, why not rubber? The bunny boats from the army surplus stores (the white ones not the black ones) are warm, ask Thanin on that one as I dont prefer to wear them. Something to do with feeling like I am at work I guess LOL. Second I wear the Sorels Glacier III's rated to -100. I am not sure who ended up with the patent for that boot but it is one heck of a boot, espically for stand hunting! Tons of good boots out there, hope you find the one you want.

Cabelas has a new boot out, I am not sure what it is called but it is in the Spring 2002 catalog. It has 1,200 grams of insulation, and it is waterproof. They look to be VERY good boots and they are light, I think they run less than $80. You might want to take a look at them, they might be warmer and they might save you a LOT of money.

I didnt think of this until now....steiger mukluks...I believe they have a web page. A couple of my partners in crime have them and they swear by them wearing them year round.....just another thought.

I don't know what you call cold, but if it's really cold, I've never found a "leather" boot that will work.

As LilHunter said, I like Bunny Boots, but only because they work well if they get wet. If you are not in danger of stepping in overflow, or getting water inside your boots, then there are many other types that will work better.

Cabela's sells something called the Trans Alaskan III, that is definitely a cold weather winner.

Also I have a pair of packs from Baffin, called Black Panthers that are extremely comfortable, and are rated (for what that's worth) at -140. They are VERY warm.

Of course all this is mute if your idea of cold is 20 degrees above zero :)

Ohio doesn't get all that bad does it. I'd go with some -65 Degree rated boots that are waterproof. If you have real bad feet you could step up to say the Snow Stalker Extremes. Spend the extra bucks and get Goretex. Another alternative is something like the boot blankets. They do work. Warm feet start with the socks. Buy a couple different weight level SmartWool socks. You'll never regret it. They are the greatest. Get the boots roomy enough so as not to cramp you if you put on a couple pairs of socks. I have some Buckmasters but because of ME and some differences with them I won't recommend anyone buy anything with a Buckmasters logo.<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

I HAVE A PAIR OF THE NORTHERN OUTFITTERS BOOTS LIKE LIKE BULL1870 MENTIONED. THEY ARE VERY WARM. NOT REAL HEAVY BUT THEY ARE BULKY ( BUT YOU NEED SOME BULK TO GET THE WARMTH).ALSO AS LILHUNTER MENTIONED THE BUNNY BOOTS ARE VERY GOOD. AND THE OLD USAF GREEN CANVAS MUKLUKS ARE VERY GOOD FOR COLD WEATHER BUT NOT WET WEATHER. I HAVE ALL THREE AND WEAR THE NORTHERN OUTFITTERS BOOTS WHEN IT'S REALLY COLD. WIND CHILL HERE YESTERDAY -93 TODAY WARMED UP ONLY -75....GLAD MY JOB IS INDOORS.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Lucky you Nimrod! I get to go outside and play in this stuff!

I will attest to the fact that a leather boot, even packed with thinsulate will not serve you as well as a good quality pair of sorels.

I just looked up your choices. The Cabela bruins would get my vote. I like the look of the sole. My workboots have a similar 'rubber' sole and you can't beat the traction. My Brownings have a hard plastic sole that just don't work in winter.

You could save yourself alot of money and but army surplus Mickey Mouse boots.I have been wearing them for about 15 years never had cold feet.Not even while Ice fishing on Lake Ontario when it was about -30.I was wearing the white ones that day, but the black ones will also keep your feet toasty.

the black ones arent rated as well as the white bunny boots...only -20 if I remember right!

I agree with Dmill....socks are just as important as the boots on your feet but yet seem to be the most over looked item! Also someone, and I am sure he/she will post here. Spraying your feet with deoderant. Heard it has worked, just never could do it...dont want my boots smelling like a locker room LOL!

You are to be complimented. Your remarks on boot ratings are 100% on the mark.

In my previous posting, I barely touched on that subject, and it is definitely due more coverage.

A great example is the Sorrel Glacier line, rated to at least -100. I've been snow machining in these boots, at -30, with very good socks on, and still froze my feet.

Then when I stepped in overflow, it got even worse! Ouch.

I just wish that there was a common standard for these ratings, so that at least we could know that we're comparing apples for apples.

As it is, the ratings only help you assess which boot in a particular manufacturers line is the warmest.

When you switch brands, the rating system switches as well...a -70 boot by Sorrell, is not the same as a -70 boot by Lacrosse etc.

The Northern Outfitters boots are definitely warm, but unfortunately don't hold up well for snow machining (too much cordura).

The best pack style boot I've found for snow machining, is the Baffin, Black Panther. It has an unusual cut and fit. Very comfortable, and great for hiking as well, should the need arise.

But, again, because of water problems, the bunny boot is by far the snow machiners best choice. That may be why so many Iron Doggers use them.

I've never tree stand hunted in my life…can't stand the thought of sitting that long. Consequently, Tree stand hunting in Ohio may offer a person much more latitude in their choices, and I would not be qualified to offer an opinion as to what works in that arena.

A bit light on the Thinsulate only 600 grams. The Cabelas Trophy Series are worth looking into. I just got a set of them. I wear scok liners and wool socks with them and stand hunt. I was out 7 degree weather and never even thought about my feet. They are totally water proof warm and have scent lock. They were a bit on the high side at 169.00. I do have to say though I am very happy with my choice in these boots. I hunt in Michigan during late season so we hunt similar temps. When the temp goes below 0 I use pack boots usually one of two sets of Sorels I have one are the Glaciers that I wear in deep snow and the others I dont remember the name of off hand but I use them in shallow snow. Hope that helps.
