Finding sheds early.

A gaurd at my workplace found a nice shed a couple weeks ago. He said that the deer always drop early around the plant property. I have found sheds in early Jan., but I have also seen bucks in early April with antlers still on. I have heard that injuries or poor nutrition will cause early shedding of antlers. Do you guys have any input for me?

Are you talking about Coffeen power plant? I've herad about deer dropping there early too. I know a couple people that work in the control room over there. I also heard there are a few albinos in that neck of the woods.

I found some of this years shed's yesterday when elk hunting. Some nice 4X4 deer antlers. Nice and brown, not bleached out, not eaten in the slightest! They were lying on top of the snow!!! they had a little bit of blood and a some hairs on it.

Injuries and high stress from the rut are major factors
with bucks dropping this early. I, myself, have never
found a 'same year' shed before early Feb., though
I've shot bucks in Dec. that have pulled off while
dragging.

A few sheds are being found around here, which concerns
me as I've still got two any sex tags to fill[:o]. Here is
a link to some good information...there are some
diehard shedhunters here.

This was the first shed antler I found last year. I found
the match 8 days later.

I work at OLIN-Winchester Division, in East Alton. We make the ammo, not the guns.
Thanks for the link Two Beards.

Ive heard of poor health causing an early drop, but have found sheds as early as January 5th and we have a healthy deer herd. Wrongway... do you make shot at your plant or do anything with lead. I work at the lead smelter that supplies Olin with the lead to make their shot and bullets.

Angus 74, I work in bullet assembly. That means that I put the lead and jacket together. I mostly make pistol bullets. Depending on which presses I run, I make 150,000 to 250,000 bullets in a 8 hr day. Our run rates are 2.8 million pistol & 300 thousand rifle a day.
I am not very good at finding sheds. I have only found 4 in 4 years. I think that you need a little luck, just like deer hunting.

It does take some luck to find them, I try to search winter feeding areas and travel areas. I usually found one or two a year until last year and got a few more with a shed catcher, food plots seem to be a good place to look also.
wrongway, its a small world to see others in a place like this that handle the very same products in different places, I run a crane at a lead recycling facility that casts the blocks for your company, also pretty good for everyone to know Winchester is using recycled materials.

Its easy to find sheds. Go to where bucks are crossing fence lines. When there lose and the jump the fence they tend to fall off within 10-15 yards of the fence. Also look in brushy areas where the antlers could get caught on something. Just thought I'd let you know how I find my sheds!

Inlaws family shot a 4pt during gun here in MI the 3rd week of Nov. When the deer hit the ground, the right antler came off. When he was dragging it out of the woods, the other side came off. In that neck of the woods, they found several sheds late Nov/early Dec. Kind of strange for MI I thought, but you never know what was going on in that area. I see deer through late April with horns on their heads.

I have a post over in deerhunting forum about shed hunting. If you have any shed pics go over and post them in that thread if you don't mind!!
