Deer runing into things that don't give.
A guy that I work with said that the buck he arrowed ran into a tree and broke it's neck. Has anyone experienced this.
A few weeks ago while taking my doe to the check station, I saw a doe laying next to a chainlink fence dead [X(] . It looked like she had come down the hill and out of the treeline at full speed and hit the fence [:o] , which was only 8 ft away. |
RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
I was driving along a country road one time and saw a buck hitailing it across an open field. He was on a collision course for my truck so I hit the brakes pretty hard. The deer crossed the road and threaded the needle, so to speak, between me and another truck coming the other way. Missing both of us by just a few feet. I saw him enter the woods on the other side of the road and he must have hit a wire fence cause the next thing I saw was that deer completely air borne doing a complete foward flip and landing on the side of his head. He did get up and keep going. That was the funniest thing I have ever seen a deer do. Kind of like laughing at a stupid best friend after you know he is OK.

Back when I was drivin an 18-wheeler, I saw deer run into fences several times. it would just knock them down, and they'd get up and either go the other way, or jump the fence. I suppose it's possible his deer ran into a tree if he was disoreinted from the shot, but out of all the deer I've killed, I've never seen one do it.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
I read a story a couple of years ago about a girls first time deer hunting. She was praticpating in a deer drive as a stander and had a doe coming at her that the drivers jumped. She paniced and didnt know what to do instead of moving or shooting she stood there and the doe ran right into her. The doe broke its neck and died from the collision. The young lady was fine except for some bruises and the ODNR gave her a salvage tag for the doe so she could take it home with her.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
The first buck I ever shot I was 15, and I hit the 8 pointer at around 60 yards with my dad's .300 savage. The buck was running up a hill when I hit him, he circled around my tree stand and down the hill into some thick laurel. Being my first deer and him circling my treestand, I think I ran out of bullets but none came close to hitting him except the first one. Well we found blood and we went to find him. About 50 or 60 yards down the hill from my treestand we get to a place where there was a log laying across the trail he took, and we saw where he slid down the hill, not thinking anything of it we found my deer about another 30 yards away, but when we found him he had two broken front legs. So this buck took a real punishment by sliding down the hill at a dead sprint and he broke both of his front legs on a real thick log over the path. Sorry guys the post is soo long, but this is my lone experience.

I shot a buck a few years ago and watched him high tail it right into a deadfall. When he hit it I heard a loud smacking noise. I figured it was a branch breaking. He got up and continued out of sight. It was starting to rain so I went right on the trail. I soon came upon the buck, still alive and trying to get up but kept falling down. I finished him off and when I was butchering him I found that he had broken his femur in two.......dabow

My son had that happen when he arrowed a nice 7 pt a couple of years ago. The buck bolted through a blowdown and hit a limb, knocking it out cold.
Another buddy of mine had shot a small 4 pt. and it ran smack into an oak. It does happen. |
RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
My Dad has had 2, a doe that died mid leap over a ditch, slamming into the opposite bank. And a buck that, ran into a tree seperating its shoulder.

In 2001, I shot my 12 Pointer and I wathced him run into a small tree. About 4" in diameter. I did have proof that this happened. Because he broke off the tip of his brow tine in the tree. I went back and pried it out later and now carry it for good luck.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
Shot a doe 2 seasons ago with the muzzleloader. She ran into a big tree 60yds away out of sight but not out of ear shot. With a loud "SLAP" she hit the tree. She was piled up at the base of it with her back broken in two places and a rib bone protruding through the skin.[:@] The shot was a clean double lung...

I arrowed a button a few years ago and he then proceeded to run into a tree, you should hear the sound they make when they run full steam into a tree and when it knocks the air out of them.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
last year i saw a doe jumping a fence, she got her hind legs caught on the top wire and did a face plant right into the dirt. she got back up and kept running so i guess she wasn't hurt to bad ...but it looked painful.

If you go to walmart and buy the mega buck series there is a large buck that is taken with an arrow that runs smack into a tree and that was the end of him.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
A couple years back a women driving her car encountered a problem like this, a buck for no reason just ran into the side of her car while it was moving, the buck was fine, and got up and ran off. I am not sure about their intelligence level anymore!

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
The 8-pointer I killed this year hopped, then stood there after I arrowed him. Once his legs got wobbly, he tried to run and did a face plant into a water oak. It broke his jaw and knocked out a couple of teeth. Buddy of mine shot a doe with a muzzleloader and she broke her neck running into a tree.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
Quite a few years ago, I remember where 4 or 5 deer jumped through the big glass window at the front of the local K-Mart. 1 died from glass cuts and a couple others had to be put down.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
About two years ago I was walking to my truck during gun season. I look in the field and there is a nice buck. I attempt a stalk and failed. As the deer took off through the field I shot. I went to look for blood, nothing. I look over to the edge and there he is. I looked for a bullet hole and there wasn't a scratch on him. He had hit a tree and broke his neck.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
ORIGINAL: willtill Well, this dispels the notion that deer are graceful..... :D I kicked two does up and they headed for a farm fence and the first one caught the fence with her back leggs and pulled it down. Best I can figure is that the fence looked shorter to the following deer because it sprang back up and she got both front leggs in it and fell in a tangled heap. She quickly got up and was gone, no worse for the wear. I laughed out loud and was happy for the privilage to see a rare sight of mother nature goofing up. I read somewhere once that humans are the only animals that blush.. or need to;) |
RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
About 10 years ago, during "the year of the ice", I watched a group of 3 bucks attempt to travel down a hillside that was covered with very thick ice. I could see all 3 of them spreading their legs wide and saw their eyes get big as they "sledded" down the hill. The one in the front--a 6 point--ran smack into a large oak tree near the bottom of the hill. I had to muffle my laughter.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
One of them Monster Bucks video show a guy hunting in Canada, I believe, that shoots a big buck with a rifle, the deer takes off running and runs full steam into a huge tree, head first. Even the camera man laughed.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
There is a huge bridge about an hour away from my house. Last year 7 deer were running down the bridge and the light turned green and when the traffic started to come, they all jumped about 100 feet to their deaths. I figured the ground didn't give too much.

RE: Deer runing into things that don't give.
Man I guess our deer are the dumbest of all cause I know of quite a few instances of running into trees and cars. One of my buddies first buck, a nice 11 point ran about 70 yards and then right into a tree. It broke off the left side of his rack. It was a clean break and a good taxidermist can fix it. That was the first of two deer he shot that year that did that. He shot a doe later in the season and she went head on with a tree. A couple of my buddies had deer run into the side of the and leave a little snot on their car. One of em had a deer run into the side flip around and took out the front lights and slid down the side of his truck. Pretty well screwed that whole side up.
