What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Which big game species is the most difficult to hunt, is it the elk, whitetail, moose, or sheep, and what's your reason's? I hunted various animals for years and for me its a toss up between the elk and whitetail deer, what say you?

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
I think it has to be the sheep, particularly Stone or Dall. The terrain is a killer. You better be in top shape and have the best optics!

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Even though I haven't hunted them yet I'd have to say that the mopuntain goat is the hardest animal by far to hunt. Sheep are hard and do live in similar terrain but you can find sheep a lot lower and in much less rugged country than the goats. Goats are in some of the most rugged and hard to get to terrain you will find anywhere.
I once read an article about thes very question and a few guides commented that most folks usually do not opt for a second mountain goat hunt no matter how successful. |
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Wolves. Harder than hell to hunt with a bow.

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Well as far as hardest here in oregon I would have to say big horn sheep cause Oregon onlly gives out like 1-2 tags a year. Plus the terrain would be tough also. But for normal hunting tags I would say Cougar cause they are sneaky and smart. I have lived here all of my life and have only seen the tail of one running into some brush as I cam around a corner before the sun came up. And I only know of two that have been killed by people that I know. And we are supposed to have the highest population of them in my area of the state.

coyotes are very hard they can see and smell better then any i think
|
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Coyotes, the eyes of a turkey and the nose of a deer, Very hard to get drawed back on one coming in to a call unless you gotta decoy to draw the attention away.
|
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Mule deer in an area with a mountain lion population.......good luck getting within 200 yards!!!!!
I would have to respectfully disagree on the coyotes (out west at least)......if you set up right (up wind, good cover, shooting lanes, etc.) they are relatively easy call in and to take with a bow (plus there are a BUNCH of them around here). My hunting partner and I kill 3 or 4 a year during archery mule deer season. |
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Antelope by far if you are not decoying or sitting at a water hole. All animals have there weeknesses though. Elk can be hard during the late season however it is very common to get shots at 10 yards during the rut. Mule deer in the rut can be slapped in the face if there are no does around. White tails will just about poke there nose into a bottle of doe urine. The key is knowing where the animals are and timimg it to your advantage.

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Shoot a turkey with a trad bow off the ground ... thats tough !
From what I've read and seen, goats and sheep are not that tough to hunt. They are tough to get to, but not tough to hunt. Elk can be both. A mature whitetail is a tough critter to kill, especially on public lands. |
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
humans
|
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
NY Bowhunter, I have to disagree, I think humans would be the easiest animal to hunt, that is unless you are looking for a specific one.
I also don't think elk hunting or mountain goat hunting is the hardest animal either. The conditions can be difficult, but the animals themselves are easily manipulated. I would have to give my vote to the wolf as the hardest animal to bowhunt, given all the factors. |
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
I'd just have to say goats and sheep simply because of their environment.

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
FIELD MICE are really tough.
The kill zone is so flippin' small and they are SO fast. Sure, you can bait them with seed, but even from 3 feet away, it's like trying to hit a nickle! Add to that the fact that they only come out of the grass for about 6 seconds at a time. Heck, that's hardly enough time to draw and get a sight picture, much less hit one! Then if you do get lucky enough to nail one with an arrow, it's tough finding both halves of the little guy, and pulling your arrow out of the ground when it's buried half way. I could go on about the difficulty involved with field dressing, but I don't think I have to. [8D] Oops! You said BIG game, didn't you ? |
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Bear with a bow, no bait.

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
I have yet to draw a big foot tag. Did you puchase that at a auction or are you just lucky?
|
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Though I haven't hunted many big animals, I'd put
coues deer with a bow near the top of the list. They definitely have humbled me[:@][&:][:@]... I've got enough unfilled tags to wallpaper a room:( |
RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
I haven't hunted many big game animals, but I would say that a cougar or wolf would be about the toughest especially if we are talking about with a bow(this is the bowhunting forum). Those might be classified as predators, but then how's about a grizzly bear? I believe that qualifies as a big game animal. What about a black panther. I bet the few of those that run around the Florida everglades would be tough to get with a bow!

RE: What's the toughest animal to hunt?
Grizzlies and brown bears aren't that difficult to find and not that difficult to get in range. They could, however, eat you. I suppose that would qualify as tough....LOL
|
whitetails are a piece of cake compared to a BLACKTAIL..
Sheep are hard. Goats are hard Big Mulies are hard. lions are the hardest i believe. no dogs. |
Whitetail deer are really smart when it comes to hunting season.
|
I havent hunted anything other thna deer, but I believe a whitetail in an area with heavy hunting pressure is a completely different animal than a whitetail in an area with a low hunter density.
|
i would say the ruff grouse...thats a challenege in thick rough terrain
|
Mature Whitetail Bucks!
|
Without a doubt it's the Split Tailed Lounge Doe. No other critter requires the level of expenditure of resources, time, and effort for so little return. :s4:
|
mature longbeard on the ground without a blind...i've done it once with my recurve...took me 4 trys on a 5 year old bird...you gotta have your s**t straight for it all to come together!
|
Bigfoot been hunting him for 10 years!
|
Coyote, never bagged one with a bow, came close many times but those suckers are always moving....
