Petersen's Bowhunting Editorial?

Has anyone else read the "From the Editor" column in the January 2004 Petersen's Bowhunting? Mr. Jay Strangis is slamming the black powder hunters. While I agree that the black powder rifles of today are nothing like those of 20 or 30 years ago, neither are bows. He also states that a "friend" of his with an in-line muzzle loader can shoot 2" groups at 200 yards. I happen to own an in-line, a top of the line rifle, that cannot shoot like that. All muzzle loaders shoot rainbows. Your lobbing the bullets in there. I don't shoot over 100 yards. I can shoot an arrow a hundred yards too, but I'd never dream of shooting at an animal that far.

He closes his editorial by saying,
"Black powder is nothing like the roots it came from, and it's time to re-regulate this industry that is pirating hunting seasons and game animals from archers as well as rifle hunters."

Nothing like driving a stake between hunters....Lets get the bowhunting crowd to attack the muzzle loader crowd. Then have the firearms crowd attacking the bowhunting crowd, since bows are nothing like the roots they came from.

What was this guy thinking? [>:] Guess I won't be renewing my subscription.

In my area of NY it's shotgun or muzzleloader only for gun season. Then their is an extended muzzleloader/bow at the end of the regular gun. Up until last year you couldn't have a scope on your muzzleloader for late season. The late season is supposed to be for primitive weapons, a single shot smoothbore shot gun with-out a scope are more primitive then the muzzleloaders of today. In fact I've seen ads that say basically "hey slug gunners want to increase your range, try this" Why did NY change the law $$, plain and simple.

I know a few guys that hunt with their muzzle loaders during regular season for one reason,to increase their kill zone. The fact that you only have one shot is not that big of a concern for them either. They don't miss that much.
I'll have to read the whole editoral and get back to you.

My solution, Do away with guns, muzzleloaders, and bows and make everybody use spears, no metal tips though that would be TOO modern. Oh and camoflague is now illegal to, makes it to easy, you have to wear a loin cloth and nothing else no matter what the weather is.

Ahh boy, I don't have a problem with people hunting with them. I can understand the concern about them not being a primitive weapon anymore. OK?

To be honest I don't think you'll see that many guys going out late season because of the new scope law either.

Better yet, lets all become vegetarians.

Oh yeah, a few years ago....there was an article in a hunting mag that reported of a guy hunting with a homemade spear....had a metal tip though...he got himself a hog.

The guy that wrote that editorial is only expressing his opinion. Opinions are like bung holes...everbody has one.
If I quit everything that expresses an opinion different from mine, I would have left this Hunting.net forum a long time ago.
Hang in there with the Bowhunting Magazine...accept and learn from the good stuff and let the bad filter on through. There's a lot of good stuff there...I read it too.
I know what you mean though...things make me mad sometimes too.

I agree with rcd, I a time when hunters should all be pulling together Strangis is trying to break us apart. I have been a subscriber of that mag. for years but I will not renew it. I guess if we could all hunt all over the country and get paid for it we might think differently, but here in Indiana by the time our MZ season comes in the deer are so spooky you need a 200yd. rifle just to get a shot at one. It's funny since the other Peterson Hunting Mag has ad after ad and article after article promoting what Strangis is putting down. Can anybody tell me the email address for the magazine so I can air my feelings directly to them.

Geez, Guess I shouldn't even bother to hunt our late season bow then. [&:] It runs with the late muzzleloader.

The title of the article is 'Kind Of a Blast", by Jay Michael Strangis.
Petersen's Bowhunting --'The opinions expressed in their magazine are not necessarily those of the editors and publishers but are the responsibility of the authors".
This article mentioned here obviously came from the editor, Jay Stangis. His claim was that black powder hunting is nothing like the roots it came from and recommends to re-regulate this industry that is pirating hunting seasons and game animals from archers as well as rifle hunters.
Distasteful in my opinion and does more harm than good for our sport!!
'I stand united' will all my legitimate hunting brothers and sisters and an article of this nature can only serve to 'divide' the harmony and support we need, to protect our hunting rights!!
Even though Mr. Stangis is expressing 'his opinion' --he should also TRY to respect the "RIGHTS and freedom" of others, to eliminate discrimination and injustice.
Just my opinion.
