Sun in your face while in stand

I always set up my stands facing the way I think the deer will come. However alot of my stands (both evening and morning stands) are facing into the sun. How do you fight the sun? Do any of you set up with your back to the trails and wait for the deer to pass by?

I try my best to have the sun behind my stand. I've had many deer come in at sunrise or sunset and I felt I could have waved my arms around and they would have never seen me because deer don't look directly into the sun. I have had a few stands where the sun starts hitting my eyes after a few hours and all you can do is lower the bill of your hat and ride it out.

Try to position my stands so the sun is at my back.

I use my climber most of the time. I can sit facing or with my back to the tree. If the sun is in my face I get on the other side of the tree and face it. OR.... I try to get in a group of trees where I can have some shade. I know everyone thinks you should have the sun at your back, BUT.... ;;;when I'm in a tree 20 feet up, if the sun is at my back any movement will likely result in a shadow moving right about where the deer is suppose to get shot. I prefer to have my shadow away from the deer.

I am with davidmil on this one. The last thing I want to do is have my shadow directly infront of the deer as I draw. I ground hunt alot and sit alot of the time looking into the sun. I also wear a large brimed hat that I can pull low to help.

Compass, sun rises in the east and sets......

Wear a brimmed hat and cut that sun out unless you are a traditional shooter. I try to compromise and setup with the sun on my right since I shoot right handed, but like davidmil says set up with some cover.

I've had deer see my shadow before, never bothered them much. If the sun is at my back, hopefully it is in their eyes and there is less chance of them seeing me.<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

I concern myself more with the wind than I do the sun, but I too am cautious about shadows. Also had an experience this summer that opened my eyes to something I hadn't thought about either. We were shooting targets from a tree stand down in the woods around sunset, and I went to take a picture of one of the guys shooting from a tree with the sun behind him. His vanes glowed, his glasses reflected prisms of light everywhere, even stuff thought of as non-reflective shimmered in the late sun. His every movement was &quot;spotlighted&quot;. Late afternoon sun is a photographers dream for great pictures, but it's something to keep in mind when hunting.

Slo-bo I am like you and must say I was surprised no one brought up the wind before you. When I set a stand I face it in the place best for the wind and good shooting lanes. If the sun is at my back that is a bonus, if it is in my face I pull the bill of my hat down.

The wind is a given. It's always FIRST. Everything else is what you like.

I concern myself with only the wind. I can deal with the sun.

I have stands such as yours. When the sun is in my face, I always wear a camoflauge baseball style cap with a camo headnet underneath it. When the sun is just about ready to go down, I turn my hat backwards. This way when the deer start comming out, I can draw my bow back without the bill of my hat in the way.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

Very intresting observation slo-bo, about the pic of the guy in the tree. I also wear glasses. I am also more concerned about wind direction. But as for the sun in my face, I wear a mask and a small brimmed hat pulled down to block the sun should it be in my face.

Check the wild first. Then try setting up facing south or north. Most of the time I face the south or southwest. However I do practice shooting with the sun in my face in case I do have to take that shot.

I try to always set up my stands facing the north for two reasons. #1. The angle of the earth in the northern hemisphere during the short winter days never hits the north side of the tree,...thus no sun in the eyes. #2. Because of #1,....I'm always in the &quot;shadow&quot; side of the tree for better camouflage.

A hat with a rim does wonders if you can't face the north.
