Broadhead for my boy?
Howdy,
Got a question for you all. My stepson shoots a 40 pound compound with a 25" arrow. Now I figure he should be shooting a cut on contact head, but which one? The pro shop says he should use the NAP Razorbak 100 grain. I don't really like that particular head, but then it isn't for me is it.[8D] What do some of you other fathers recommend to your kids? |
RE: Broadhead for my boy?
If he is going out to hunt deer and has practiced enough and is serious then we are talking about a "Hunter" , not just an arrowhead for our kids.
With only 40 pounds he needs a broadhead with more rake on it for penetration. Definatly a cut on impact fixed blade broadhead. I like for him.. Steelforce Sabertooth, Montec G5, Muzzy Phantom, etc there are dozens to pick from. Good luck to him. |
RE: Broadhead for my boy?
My nephew shoots a 40lb draw and he uses the same blades I do.
Muzzy 100grain 4 blade. He uses a 26" arrow. This does well for him for target, he hasn't had a chance to kill a deer yet. |

RE: Broadhead for my boy?
I think that with your boy's setup he would be much better off with a two bladed cut on contact head for deer. I believe the two blade will give much better penetration which will be needed with that setup. I'd probably suggest either magnus or zwickey. They can be practiced with an aweful lot and can be sharpened easily.

RE: Broadhead for my boy?
I would suggest Magnus Stinger 2 blades for the 40# draw, or the Rocky Mountain Tradition. Both should be very good heads for a young guy. I would prefer the Magnus stingers though. Better angle on the blades = more penetration, and that is what a young archer needs. You have to start him with a head that will do a good job, a wounded or lost deer hit by the young guy would scar his hunting career for a long time!
I use the Magnus Stinger 4 blades and man o' man what a great head, you won't be disappointed with the Stinger 2 blade, Good luck to you and your boy, Jason Holtz |
RE: Broadhead for my boy?
I agree with jholtz7. Magnus 2 blade 100 gr would be my choice for him. Great heads.

RE: Broadhead for my boy?
My two top choices would be the Rocky tradition and the magnus stinger two blade. Both heads work well, penetrate deep and are accurate. Cut on contact styles that maximize penetration are your best bet. The Rocky Tradition is the best penetrating head I have tested, while the stinger cuts a bit larger wound chanel. Either would be an excellent choice.

RE: Broadhead for my boy?
Just to suport what some others have said , magnus 100 , sharpened deadly sharp or steelfource 2 blade cut on contact would be my choice with the skinyest arrow that works well for him , useing feathers . I think you will have the best chance of a passthru with a setup like this . Trocar tips , like the ones muzzy uses , in my opinion dont penitrate as well .

RE: Broadhead for my boy?
;) I agree with others who favor 2 blade/superior quality brands. With the pull weight he is comfy with he will be well-served in heeding those suggestions. Practice! The well placed shot is still the most important ingrediant to the young man's success.
